Krinkle posted:I read a little further this morning before I had to go on a road trip, Rider seems to be asking me if I'm ready for Sakura to crack and murder everyone and if I'll still be on her side unless I misunderstood? She also might have been asking if I'm ready to let her die and survive because the other way around would be intolerable to Sakura. I'll pick it back up tomorrow night. I can't not finish I mean I'm clearly imagining the worst and it's going to grieve me more than whatever actually happens. For my part, I'm really liking HF. I haven't bumped up against any of the irritation I had during UWB, specifically (HF 11th day) during some of those never ending fights with that kungfu teacher dude that were lame. I'm also a big fan of 'loving around cooking food' so I've been plugging away pretty well now. The arm reveal was real cool, even if it was super super SUPER obvious how similar it makes emiya to sakura, at least in terms of everybody going 'if u use magic you'll die!!!!'. edit: Oh poo poo! (day 12) It's gettin sick nasty up in here! people getting down / getting funky, emiya has brain damage or something, ilya is all like "yeah wouldn't that be nice to live together if I wasn't a fuckin grail or some poo poo dawg.' I think it's interesting that contrasting with the other routes, Rin is a LOT less useful. I think this is primarily cuz she is a very traditional master and, as was posited earlier, HF is the holy grail war all hosed up backwards. She's out of her depth. Meanwhile Emiya has liquidsnake's arm all up on him tellin him to do stuff and sakura got hosed, sliced, diced, and then took a nap with some dizzle worms. Yes, I am confused how they still haven’t actually contacted me myself besides the snippy letter, but I think we’re long past technicalities. I’m thankful to everyone who tried to support it though, so thank you. Another interesting thing is this graph: Yesterday there were 13 pledges for a total sum of -$23

It mentioned on the KS page that Little Witch (the original developers) went out of business several years ago. So who are the current license holders and what relation do they have to the original work?

The Dysfunctional Systems VN really is pretty great. I ended up following Cyrus because frankly the dude had a way better idea of what was going on than Winter, and his ideologies were seemingly sensible, and boom there's the path to hell. I mean looking back on it it was still the best decision I could have made with the information I had, but even still watching things go to poo poo so incredibly fast was very startling. I guess it's also that i'm so used to games saying "you know cruelty can be the greatest kindness" that it's actually surprising when you get a game that responds with "Yeah, and sometimes it's just loving cruel, jackass." I'm definitely enjoying it so far, and i'm really glad that it didn't end after the whole radiation sickness deal because it seemed like it might have been wrapping up there.

A cursory glance at the flowchart if you are using one tells you that poo poo gets really crazy, especially in the last 2-3 days, as HF's flowchart is almost 2x as long as the UBW and FATE arcs.

I'm up to day... fifteen in HF. I am hitting a lot of bad ends. Sakura has been asking for help with her suicide for days and the obvious happens when I finally get the choice to try. Pretty on edge while I play through this. It could have been worse, false hopes wise, if it wasn't already confirmed that Illya can't be saved, she's going to die of rapid aging homunculitis anyway. So many interludes. Haha Assassin has chased Kotomine to the gently caress ruins from Fate on the outskirts of istviel's estates. No sex was had but it was still a pretty good interlude.

So I finished Marathoning through Muv Luv and Alternative yesterday. So good. I've pretty much done nothing but play it since it arrived on Saturday. As soon as they started talking about something making him a causality conductor I pretty much knew what was going to happen though. The last few hours was just me waiting for the hammer to come down. The ending was incredibly unsatisfying though. After all those developments, he goes back to being rear end in a top hat McProtag, ignorant of everything, only now he randomly tears up. What a satisfying conclusion to 50-60 hours of storytelling and character development. He finally turned into a likeable, competent protagonist and then goes back to being the same piece of trash he was when the series started. Urgh. Have him stay in Alternative. Hook up with Yuuko or something. I don't know. Anything is better than the nigh complete reset they ended up with. On a somewhat related note, what are other VNs where the protagonist isn't a useless shitheel that goes with the flow throughout the entire thing? Looks like I'll be out with a hosed up back for another few weeks, so I need stuff to do.

Cynic Jester posted:Mabu Rabus As for recommendations that haven't been mentioned, from what I remember (been several years) I liked Divi-Dead because the protagonist (and reader) didn't know what the gently caress, but he was actively attempting to figure it out. Not an action hero, just a "regular" highschooler asked by his uncle to enroll at the academy and in his stead uncover what's behind certain occurrences (presumably drug use), only to find out the hole goes deep into the supernatural territory, and plots within plots within plots. Old and porny, though.

Really, as long as you stay out of romantic comedies, you'll generally avoid the useless VN protagonists. (Well, in terms of translated VNs; it's a combination of the translator filter effect and western sensibilities.) The worst you'll get is someone like Little Buster's Riki, where he's not a central go-getter but he does things when they need doing. In terms of "out-and-out active protagonists," Majikoi's Yamato is also pretty good about doing things. Most of the others I can think of are already mentioned. (Also, read Hierofania)

There are a few rom-com ones I can think of with non useless protagonists. Period, Hoshizora no Memoria, Family Project, and Yumi Miru Kusuri all come to mind for me. The last of those is fairly porny though.

The KiraKira/DearDrops protagonists are fairly switched on. Come to think of it, Edelweiss (and I guess Go Go Nippon) aside, Overdrive are pretty good for that.

Thanks for the recommendations. I bought Yumi Miru Kusuri because it was available for download and ordered a few others online. Yumi Miru Kusuri was pretty porny, but the stories themselves were nice. The fact that the (non-blood related)sister wasn't an actual romance impressed me a lot. I'd have thought they'd shove that in with no second thoughts, ignoring the effect it would have on the overall story. For a game with such frequent sex scenes, it was overall quite restrained compared to what it could have been.

All the cooking parts lately are about how people are loving up at cooking, anyway, so I took them as indication of plot progression and moved on. Also I don't know what dashi or tofu taste like so it might as well be writing about smurfberries at those parts. Also GRRM has conditioned me to scroll past food words when someone is about to get shanked. These are my excuses.

I liked how in the school council girl's route... can't remember her name, I know it started with "Mi" though, when she reappears and goes into labour and so on, your little sister immediately jumps on the "Nope, we're helping her out and I'm gonna be a kickass aunt" train. That's another VN I want to re-read, come to think of it.

The only good English sources I've found are Ami Ami and Palet Web, but they sell out pretty quickly. Some doujin games (such as Umineko/Higurashi or Tsukihime) eventually simply run out of copies in circulation, in which case you're left with something like ebay. I'm sure it's much easier if you're living in Japan, of course.
