Hey guys do you want a sequel to the Nintendo horror video game Eternal Darkness? Well you're in luck because the original developer is trying to make a spiritual successor. They may have already fleeced a major publisher to help fund the gameplay video for it and also lost millions in a frivolous lawsuit they started last year, but don't worry guys they totally want to make a great game and not just steal your money. That's why they completely bypassed Kickstarter and Indiegogo and made the crowdfunding campaign on their own site, because they want to interact with you the gamer directly.

Also please ignore their Terms of Use page, its all legal mumbo jumbo that hardcore gamers such as yourselves shouldn't bother yourselves with.

They want it to be episodic too! A few places on the site say all this money is just going into episode one.

So goddamn many red flags, I'm gonna be disappointed if this makes anything near what they ask.

Exactly what it sounds like.

There has been a push in recent years to break up games into episodic content. Its a cheaper way to expand a series than it is to make full blown sequels. Telltale tends to do this a lot with their adventure games, there is an overarching metaplot for the season that connects the smaller plots of individual episodes together.

It would actually not be all that horrible for the original ED, the game is structured to make it work. Each episode would have been exploring the mansion and beginning the next chapter of the game.

It really ends up being a bit of a mixed bag, it is definitely a cash grab for devs. However, it could lead to a longer experience than might normally be found in a straight up sequel.

The thread is Games is totally worth a read and is only a few pages.

The short of it is that that trailer was made when Silicon Knights was still around and it took them years to make it, now there's only 9 people in Dyack's new company and a third of them are executives. Also their Terms of Use say that they get to keep the money no matter what, they have no obligation to make the game, and you can't sue them.

Fwiw terms of use is not a contract so how enforceable is that? I know some argument was made about a judge considering a EULA agreement to be like a contract sorry about being vague since I'm not a lawyer or well read on the subject so correct me if im wrong but I imagine one could sue if they clearly acted in bad faith

The drama is actually not related to Eternal Darkness, which is considered to be a fantastic game. The drama you want to be looking at revolves around the studio's latest two games, X-Men Destiny and Too Human, the latter of which was Dyack's pet project.

Both these games were loving awful.

Those Terms of Use will hold up in a court for about as long as it takes for the judge to read them, especially if they're never prompted to the suckerbacker prior to sending money. Companies force you to click through their EULA/TOS to help cover themselves better if you try to take action. Just as Apple makes you do it a lot (they also have to do it when they update the terms as you can't be held to new terms just because you agreed to old ones).

The real thing that killed the studio though was their lawsuit against Epic claiming that they got a lovely version of the Unreal engine with little to no documentation. They lost, Epic counter-sued and won with the judge ruling that all copies of SK games that used the Unreal engine had to be destroyed and they owed Epic something like $6 million.

Actually, the countersuit was because Epic claimed "Silicon Knights'" engine they created "instead of" Unreal was actually just heavily modified or openly stolen UE3. They proved it pretty loving conclusively because the coders copy/pasted quite a bit of UE3 code (including comments and typos) into "their" engine. This is the level of talent left at SK (and probably this new company) anymore. Do not pay them.

There's also the fact that the reason both of those games (though mostly X-Men: Destiny) are awful is because the company was driven into the ground trying to secure funding for Eternal Darkness 2. Most of the team for X-Men was taken off of it half-way through and put to work on Eternal Darkness tech demos. It never went anywhere and every other project suffered because things were horribly mismanaged.

I wish I could find the report that detailed all of this, but it was months ago and hell if I can find it now.

Nintendo was breathing down their backs on Twin Snakes/Eternal Darkness, is the common excuse. From the above story:

quote:

This command structure wasn't always such a fatal flaw, former employees said. Before Silicon Knights cut ties with Japanese powerhouse Nintendo following the 2004 release of Twin Snakes, the studio had crucial outside help for game quality, design and process. "This is the reason for the extremely high quality games that SK built a reputation on," says one source. "Nintendo was going to put their name on the game, so it had to be 'Nintendo quality.'"

Silicon Knights' post-Nintendo releases certainly took a dive in quality, based on the low Metacritic scores for Too Human and X-Men: Destiny, so this theory seems plausible. "Once [Nintendo] were out of the picture, SK could do whatever they wanted," a source says. "Denis believed that SK was finally out from under the oppressive nature of Nintendo as a publisher. Once Denis was given more freedom, things started to fall apart."

Silicon Knights actually developed for Nintendo for several years a decade ago and released ED and the Metal Gear Solid remake, The Twin Snakes, under them. Nintendo pretty much kept Dyack in check but he doomed his own company when he broke off the lucrative deal they had going with Nintendo to make his glorious magnum opus that would been known as Too Human, which as previously mentioned is now currently having all unsold copies destroyed due to SK stealing Epic Games' Unreal Engine to make it.

I never read any of the stories about the game being bad before playing it, so I was able to play without any prejudice. I really enjoyed it for the first half. It felt incomplete like they wanted to make a sequel but ran out of money so they had to wrap it up

They destroyed extra copies of ET because they made more copies than systems in existence.

They destroyed Too Human because of a court ordered cease and desist.

They're not really anything similar.

They'll need to raise enough money to pay a sound engineer to edit 20 podcast episodes so the actual goal will be a lot more than $10. If anyone else other than these guys with their diehard fanbase pulled that trick we'd accuse them of doing the KS equivalent of the Indiegogo flexible funding campaigns that we all hate and distrust but for the PA guys it's more of a cute gimmick since they're pretty much guaranteed to meet and exceed their need.

It looks like there's really absolutely nothing to a KS review beyond checking for porn or the like before it's allowed to go live. Which I guess is fine, but it allows for this sort of crap to exist, never mind "$829".
