I think it's probably meant to be intentional, either to show that Issachar is a big dumb hick who can't say words right or to sort of make the culture seem a bit more foreign/alien. Or maybe that voice actor is just really bad at saying words.

I shudder to think what it might be like nowadays with Japan going off the deep end into underage creepiness in the past decade.

I remember one hilarious review for Final Fantasy 8 which basically went "Well, it looks nice, but the Draw mechanic is tedious and the gameplay just isn't that good--it's not all that fun. 9." And it's pretty normal for magazines to receive early copies before release so that they can review it. Actually IIRC illegal copies of English Nocturne were floating around a month or two before release because some magazine reviewer leaked it. SMTIV comes out in Japan next Thursday. Still trying to decide whether or not I should drop the extra cash to import a copy or just download it cheaper off the e-Shop.

I really want to be excited for SMT IV. I absolutely adore Nocturne, and I like a bunch of other SMT stuff. The thing is, I've never liked the idea of first person combat. It completely took me out of Strange Journal, I felt like I barely had agency over the team. Having one perspective for multiple characters has always been offputting to me. Can someone here tell me why the first person stuff doesn't bother you, or even why you like it?

Regardless of camera position, it's the same combat system overall. Gameplay-wise it is identically functional. It's like during the NES days, when you had Dragon Warrior III versus Final Fantasy: Dragon Warrior was first person, Final Fantasy let you see your four dudes, but at the end of the day, you're selecting commands from a menu. I know folks out there really care about presentation and all, but for me, an RPG is all about its mechanics.

I was the same way mostly (it bugged me in SJ quite a bit) but after playing through the EO series and other first person dungeon crawlers I've just learned to not mind it at all. The only advice I can really give is to suck it up since eventually you just get used to it. I'm still disappointed that they went that direction for SMT4, but it's definitely not a deal breaker for me like it would have been a few years ago.

Nocturne was amazing because Demi-Fiend's default attack is a punch and you get to see him kill a lot of things that way. Anything else I'm okay with in first-person view since it won't be as interesting.

It is also kind of quaint, both gameplaywise and plotwise (oh my god this 'online' thing is amazing). Relatively short too - beat the game at 36 hours and 4-5 of that was at the casino. I don't know how extensive the postgame content is. I was happy to finally play it but it will not be one of the SMT titles I pick back up to replay down the road.

Soul Hackers was my first SMT game I really dug into and I like it a lot. It makes for the perfect first SMT game I think because there's still the trademark bullshit, but it isn't constantly bullshitting you. And if you hate said BS the difficulty hacks change certain aspects of the game without changing the difficulty outright. I feel that enabling them will spoil me for SMT 4 so I try to keep em off. I just have so many chaos demons and gently caress I want principality but I haven't ran into a single lawful demon except my boy koraepakkur (spelled that wrong) and AAAAAAAA. I love that guy negotiating is so funny sometimes. I want a remake of if... Really bad. SMT4 is gonna be great though.
