Also apparently the game was translated alongside development, so that's why it's going here so fast.

I believe it's technically the authentic way to say it, but it's just become commonplace to say "sam-ah-rai" rather than "soh-muh-rai."

Eh, it gets it wrong too. More like sa-moo-rai. This (click on the listen button) is a native speaker saying it.

Eventually you'll learn to accept that Japanese aren't going pronounced the Japanese way in English.

I don't think they're even saying Mikado right for instance. The emphasis on the second syllable gives off the same bad vibes as yuh-coo-za.

I think it's probably meant to be intentional, either to show that Issachar is a big dumb hick who can't say words right or to sort of make the culture seem a bit more foreign/alien.

Or maybe that voice actor is just really bad at saying words.

The country hick thing seems pretty likely, honestly. I guess later characters might pronounce it differently to show a change in class?

Yeah, it is supposed to be a kind of Quasi-EuroJapan, so having them be a bit off might be the point, i.e, Kichigiorji

It is, but the emphasis is on the first syllable. MI-ka-do rather than the English trailer's mi-KA-do. It is a pretty subtle thing in the trailer though, and I might just be imagining it.

One thing I really would like is for social links advancements to integrate with the game world. If you are "bestest" friends with Brosuke, he better visit you in November. If you are trying to date both Yukiko and Chie, one of them at least should spill the beans and situation could become awkward.

I don't know, every Famitsu review I've seen reads like that. I don't think I've ever actually seen a critical thought appear in one.

Honestly being a Famitsu reviewer must be the easiest thing in the world.

Are there a lot of new readers for Famitsu? This basically reads out like if people buying Famitsu suffered from amnesia with regards to what a Megami Tensei game encompasses and, I know we're not talking Dragon Quest, Pokémon or Final Fantasy, but isn't the franchise rather well known over there? I mean hell, the last version of Nocturne came out 5 years ago and Strange Journey is barely 3 years old.

I dunno, I think it's par for the course of a low-effort Famitsu review. As far back as I can remember, at least the 16-bit days, Famitsu has always been a piece of crap magazine. It makes Western games "journalism" look like a bastion of professionalism. I don't know why anyone would give anything it says any stock.

Not that I can think of any good alternatives though. I used to read Dengeki back in the 32-bit days and it was marginally better but it had a disturbing fondness for anime girl games to the point that I suspected its editors spent a good portion of their time playing porn games. I shudder to think what it might be like nowadays with Japan going off the deep end into underage creepiness in the past decade.

Because it makes Wikipedia articles about a game sound much more impressive.

Especially if the title has enough advertising dollars behind it, yes. I remember one hilarious review for Final Fantasy 8 which basically went "Well, it looks nice, but the Draw mechanic is tedious and the gameplay just isn't that good--it's not all that fun. 9."

And it's pretty normal for magazines to receive early copies before release so that they can review it. Actually IIRC illegal copies of English Nocturne were floating around a month or two before release because some magazine reviewer leaked it.

SMTIV comes out in Japan next Thursday. Still trying to decide whether or not I should drop the extra cash to import a copy or just download it cheaper off the e-Shop.

I am aware of what the hands look like. I did my best. :(
I really want to be excited for SMT IV. I absolutely adore Nocturne, and I like a bunch of other SMT stuff.
The thing is, I've never liked the idea of first person combat. It completely took me out of Strange Journal, I felt like I barely had agency over the team. Having one perspective for multiple characters has always been offputting to me.
Can someone here tell me why the first person stuff doesn't bother you, or even why you like it?

Regardless of camera position, it's the same combat system overall. Gameplay-wise it is identically functional. It's like during the NES days, when you had Dragon Warrior III versus Final Fantasy: Dragon Warrior was first person, Final Fantasy let you see your four dudes, but at the end of the day, you're selecting commands from a menu.

I know folks out there really care about presentation and all, but for me, an RPG is all about its mechanics.

Honestly, it's just something you have to get used to. I was the same way mostly (it bugged me in SJ quite a bit) but after playing through the EO series and other first person dungeon crawlers I've just learned to not mind it at all. The only advice I can really give is to suck it up since eventually you just get used to it.

I'm still disappointed that they went that direction for SMT4, but it's definitely not a deal breaker for me like it would have been a few years ago.

First video-game I played on a computer 20 years ago was the old PC version of Wolfenstein; I think ever since then I haven't been bothered by the first-person perspective. I do, on occasion, prefer to see the dudes I'm controlling, but it seems there's going to be quite a bit of exploration on this game, so it shouldn't be that much of a deal-breaker.

Plus, it reminds me of Earthbound!

Nocturne was amazing because Demi-Fiend's default attack is a punch and you get to see him kill a lot of things that way. Anything else I'm okay with in first-person view since it won't be as interesting.

Wolfenstein was top-down though?

But yeah, as mentioned in a turn-based RPG it really makes no difference. And honestly it's to be expected with the SMT series because the only SMT game that wasn't first-person-perspective in the battles was Nocturne. Even some of the spinoffs (Last Bible, Devil Children, etc) are first-person.

EO4 is an excellent game. Soul Hackers does feel quite dated, but it's not bad at all. I would recommend you to finish one of the games before sinking time on the other one, though. Tried to play through Overclocked, Soul Hackers and EO4 at the same time. That didn't end well.

Spells materialize and fire at enemies! Everything attacks instead of just kind of wiggling and flashing! This is as realistic as video games will ever get! :allears:

That being said, this isn't quite Dragon Warrior we're talking about. Having on-screen effects and good sound goes a long way. The only huge downside (for me) is that it's pretty much impossible to show relative size. That massive embodiment of evil you're fighting in the epic showdown to determine the final fate of Japan? Yeah, he's just as big as three pixies.

It's entertaining and worth checking out. It is also kind of quaint, both gameplaywise and plotwise (oh my god this 'online' thing is amazing). Relatively short too - beat the game at 36 hours and 4-5 of that was at the casino. I don't know how extensive the postgame content is.

I was happy to finally play it but it will not be one of the SMT titles I pick back up to replay down the road.

Soul Hackers was my first SMT game I really dug into and I like it a lot. It makes for the perfect first SMT game I think because there's still the trademark bullshit, but it isn't constantly bullshitting you. And if you hate said BS the difficulty hacks change certain aspects of the game without changing the difficulty outright. I feel that enabling them will spoil me for SMT 4 so I try to keep em off. I just have so many chaos demons and gently caress I want principality but I haven't ran into a single lawful demon except my boy koraepakkur (spelled that wrong) and AAAAAAAA. I love that guy negotiating is so funny sometimes.
