I honestly wouldn't be surprised if after this they continue to not get anywhere near their goal, we hear Dyack has been fired.

Here's how they should do it. They should start again with a goal of $400k, which they might get. Then announce a stretch goal at $1.35m of a new writer/producer/whatever on the project, except instead of naming a big name hire they say they'll fire Dyack.

Why would you say that? I mean each tumbler has 26 options and there are four tumblers. You wouldn't have to use a four letter word, it could be anything that you remember. I think it looks like a great idea... Except for the dinky little screw eyelet on the back.

Each tumbler only has 10 options, if you watch the video you can see each tumbler only has a small portion of the alphabet. They also mentions 10k combinations which implies 4x10 tumblers.

Melissa Joan Hart, the '90s teen star who currently dwells in the basement of fame known as the ABC Family network, has effectively canceled her Kickstarter campaign after falling a whopping $1,948,395 short of her goal. Which begs the question: Melissa Joan Hart had a Kickstarter campaign? And also: who is Melissa Joan Hart?

Titled "Darci's Walk of Shame," the rom-com project's official fundraising page describes the plot this way: "An impulsive act has Darci face enormous hurdles to get back to her sister’s wedding and avoid her family witness her first walk of shame." Which sounds...well, pretty loving confusing actually.

"For those of you out there that still love and adore 'Sabrina,' 'Clarissa' and my new show 'Melissa & Joey,' I promise that this comedy will deliver the laughs and silliness that you have come to know and expect from me and my taste in projects," said Melissa in a personal statement, appealing to the seventeen people who actually believe that's a good thing. "I am asking you to do what Hollywood won't, and that is to take a chance on me as the lead of a romantic comedy film. The more money we raise, the more likely this film will reach numerous movie theaters and impress those same Hollywood execs that have caused a stumbling block in my path to a more serious film career."

This is the problem with already established stars like Zach Braff doing Kickstarters for vanity projects, if you have access to the Hollywood system and its rejected your idea it's probably for a reeeeeeally good reason. Hollywood doesn't produce entertainment for their fans, they produce entertainment to make a profit.

So if Hollywood doesn't think if will make a profit that means a project shouldn't be made at all?

Fans gave 5.7 million dollars to make the Veronica Mars movie, the kickstarter happened because some business men didn't think it would make enough money to bother, yet there was clearly a big interest in it being made. The problem is with the system that would rather gamble on a 200 million dollar movie, than one that costs 10 million.

Also in almost every case where a entertainment kickstarter has done well, all the people who rejected the idea in the first place, come and want a piece of the pie now that they can smell money.

There's no value judgement in simply stating a fact, I didn't say that at all. But washed up stars like Melissa Joan Hart and Zach Braff who can't get stuido funding for their projects should follow the traditional route: years of rejections and failures until they're spit out the bottom of the porn industry.

I don't really know the details of any of these kickstarters, but seems like a stars vanity project would be perfect for kickstarter. If it's funding something the fans would enjoy, but won't make enough of a profit to get funding from traditional sources, why not have the fans fund it? They are the only ones that would want it anyways, so let them band together to see it. This is assuming they are asking for enough money to fund the whole project.

While it annoys me that Kickstarter is being used by celebrities to fund their bullshit when someone with no previous star appeal but a nice idea could really do better with it, but it's not like plenty of small-time good ideas aren't getting funded too. People are entitled to do whatever they want with their money.

I bet plenty of potentially-great Kickstarter ideas have failed because they weren't headed by someone popular or were never bigged-up on Twitter or Kotaku or whatever. Which sucks.

It annoys me because, in my head, Kickstarter is this symbolic milestone where people who don't have money or exposure can be given a chance to get their ideas made based on a community of people who happen to like the idea chipping in to help out.
Oh, rich people who were already famous / won the lottery are using it? Oh. Okay. :negative:

It's not actually a big deal or a problem that celebrities are using it, of course. It makes the idea of a Kickstarter I want to run sometime that much scarier though, because I'm a nobody whose Kickstarter won't be mentioned on internet news sites and Kickstarter is going more and more mainstream and saturated that there'll be no more money left and I'll never get to realise my ideas, but that's more a reflex reaction than anything rational. It's no big deal.
