I just watched Dredd for the first time last night and was pretty blown away by how great it was. Like, on every level I loved what was going on in this movie. Even the big sweeping CGI shots of the Mega City were pretty drat good looking and I would have assume that kind of thing would be the weak point of a movie with this kind of budget. But I really loved the fact that it actually had characters that I cared about. Urban was amazing obviously, but the rookie Anderson really made me like her and root for her in a way I wasn't expecting. And the villain(Lena Headley? I think it may have been her) was great too, she was somehow understated and over the top at the same time. And it goes without saying that the action was loving awesome. One of the best 2 or 3 movies I've seen in the past 12 months.

I haven't read most of this thread but I guess this is the type of post that comes in pretty regularly here. This is a movie that most people just wrote off and assumed would be crap.

Dear God I hope so.

edit- I'm usually not into this stuff, but, here is a form where you can contact the company that funded Dredd, since he mentioned mailing letters specifically.

Any recommendations on what to actually say or if it's even really worth it? I doubt that they even read their emails.

And, just to get it on the new page.

Write a letter if you really want to make a difference - they'll definitely read that.

Say something like:

- you had been not that excited to see it because you thought it was something to do with Stallone
- then you saw it because of wildly enthusiastic word of mouth
- and you've been raving about it to your friends
- and you bought the bluray
- and you like it because of x, y, z (open this thread to a random page and c/p some of the praise if you need inspiration)
- and you're super excited by the idea of a sequel

Dredd vs Death is a pretty lame game, though it does have some nice satire. The first thing you do in the game is shoot up a bunch of democracy activists for demonstrating without a license. Dredd sentences people to lengthy prison sentences for owning a hamster without a license. The gameplay, however, was pretty lame even for its day.

There is also Dredd vs Zombies available on Windows 8, but's it's total rubbish.

I watched the movie on DVD a couple weeks ago, and they mentioned in one of the special features that all of those aerial shots were filmed in Johannesburg, and that they barely had to do any CGI (aside from putting in the giant skyscrapers) because it already looks like such a stark, dystopian city to begin with :pwn:

Plus interesting how they used some visually interesting real-world locations with CGI dressing for places such as the hall of justice or the highway chase scene from the intro.

My favorite movies of all time are ones from the 80s (RoboCop, Punisher, Commando) and when I saw Dredd every tiny neuron of memory and enjoyment from that era of film fired off at the same time. I loving love this movie and rarely watch a movie more than once but I watch Dredd almost every week. It really hit all the right notes and I love how the ending wasn't just insane balls to the wall action - it just kind of ended and was like "welp, another mission done - time to do more judging."

It was perfect, in every way. I wish they would make a HBO series like Deadwood.

Well that's exactly like the comic of course - no matter what Dredd does, the next day is more of the same

I like the small interplay of The Chief Judge coming to have a look at what made Dredd call in a 10-24. Not just did Anderson survive or pass, but what could possibly cause Dredd of all Judges to want backup. And he dismisses it as just another drug bust.

They really nailed Dredd of the comics perfectly. Beat a bunch of Interdimensional spirits posing a Judges out to kill everyone? Eh whatever, back on the Law Master and bust some more crime

Part of this is also how the plot was set up. The movie just as easily could have easily been a story about the time Dredd saved the city from a bunch of armed terrorists with a doomsday device.

Perhaps it's in the nature of television. Just waves in space.

Bumping this thread up just to quote this:

quote:

For anyone who missed the SEQUEL news yesterday:
An industry executive who chose to remain nameless sent the page this message yesterday:

"DNA will know in the next few weeks whether the important DVD/Blu-ray sales have boosted the overall profits on the movie enough to consider a sequel. Tell everyone to start their letter writing and sharing of the film in earnest as this could be the last chance for a number of years or never!"

You heard it everyone, this could be the last chance! Let's make DREDD #1 in the UK and the USA! Since the news broke yesterday, Dredd moved up to #4 in the UK and #33 in the USA! If you've bought your copy then great but if you haven't and you are on this site, if not now then when?? Help the cause! I'll be posting updates on the sales throughout the day/week. Let's show them how much we want this!
It's very "My uncle works at Nintendo and..." but the potential news has caused Dredd on dvd/blu-ray to jump to the #1 slot on Amazon UK and from 230 to 24~ on Amazon US since it was posted.
Let's hope it's true because that's a pretty drat significant jump.

Really loved Dredd. One thing I liked about the movie is how good a job they did on filling the background with interesting looking characters. It reminded me of a Sergio Leone western that way. I mean, look at Ma-Ma's bodyguard:

He's played by Tamer Burjaq, who is apparently a personal trainer in South Africa.
