I just watched Dredd for the first time last night and was pretty blown away by how great it was. Like, on every level I loved what was going on in this movie. Even the big sweeping CGI shots of the Mega City were pretty drat good looking and I would have assume that kind of thing would be the weak point of a movie with this kind of budget. But I really loved the fact that it actually had characters that I cared about. Urban was amazing obviously, but the rookie Anderson really made me like her and root for her in a way I wasn't expecting. And the villain(Lena Headley? I think it may have been her) was great too, she was somehow understated and over the top at the same time. And it goes without saying that the action was loving awesome. One of the best 2 or 3 movies I've seen in the past 12 months. I haven't read most of this thread but I guess this is the type of post that comes in pretty regularly here. This is a movie that most people just wrote off and assumed would be crap.

Everyone seriously owes it to themselves to watch the fanfilm Judge Minty, especially the comic readers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aavS_XUITXU God drat, it captures the comics remarkably well. Write a letter if you really want to make a difference - they'll definitely read that. Say something like: - you had been not that excited to see it because you thought it was something to do with Stallone - then you saw it because of wildly enthusiastic word of mouth - and you've been raving about it to your friends - and you bought the bluray - and you like it because of x, y, z (open this thread to a random page and c/p some of the praise if you need inspiration) - and you're super excited by the idea of a sequel

My favorite movies of all time are ones from the 80s (RoboCop, Punisher, Commando) and when I saw Dredd every tiny neuron of memory and enjoyment from that era of film fired off at the same time. I loving love this movie and rarely watch a movie more than once but I watch Dredd almost every week. It really hit all the right notes and I love how the ending wasn't just insane balls to the wall action - it just kind of ended and was like "welp, another mission done - time to do more judging." It was perfect, in every way. I wish they would make a HBO series like Deadwood.

Well that's exactly like the comic of course - no matter what Dredd does, the next day is more of the same I like the small interplay of The Chief Judge coming to have a look at what made Dredd call in a 10-24. Not just did Anderson survive or pass, but what could possibly cause Dredd of all Judges to want backup. And he dismisses it as just another drug bust. They really nailed Dredd of the comics perfectly. Beat a bunch of Interdimensional spirits posing a Judges out to kill everyone? Eh whatever, back on the Law Master and bust some more crime

Part of this is also how the plot was set up. The movie just as easily could have easily been a story about the time Dredd saved the city from a bunch of armed terrorists with a doomsday device.

Really loved Dredd. One thing I liked about the movie is how good a job they did on filling the background with interesting looking characters. It reminded me of a Sergio Leone western that way. I mean, look at Ma-Ma's bodyguard: He's played by Tamer Burjaq, who is apparently a personal trainer in South Africa. http://www.pro-trainer.co.za/pro-team.html
