That Mermaid mockumentary is really weirdly good, but it frustrates the hell out of me since it's like the only doc about that really interesting and evocative aquatic ape theory but it's all wrapped up in a fantasy veneer.

We had to have a "talk" after watching that. Lol. It's all good though. =) Glad we watched it, and awesome again that I knew I could come here and find an obscure show.

Need some recommendations for some good 80s/90s horror movies that have a unique premise, contain lots of practical gore/creature effects, and have a sleazy low budget aesthetic. For example: Basket Case, Street Trash, C.H.U.D., From Beyond.

It's most definitely taking the piss out of the art world but that doesn't mean it's fictional. Plenty of documentaries make strong, indicting statements about their subjects but it's still all true. However, the discussion of whether Exit Through The Gift Shop is true or not is a bit of what I'm going for. I've seen Annie Hall and Marienbad and love them both. An Oversimplification of Her Beauty looks like it could be definitely be the kind of thing I want, I'll try and find out how I can see it. Thanks. Edit: Looks like Oversimplification is touring right now but it'll be coming to a theater I go to regularly so I'll try and catch it then. Thanks! Can anyone recommend me some good (or at least entertaining) surreal 70s science fiction movies? Stuff like Zardoz, A Boy and His Dog, A Clockwork Orange, Slaughterhouse Five, or Sleeper. Unnecessary nudity and ham-fisted social commentary are definitely welcome.

Also, the year is less important than the style in what I'm looking for, so go ahead and recommend movies anyway. I didn't know Jesús Franco died until now. I just watched my first Franco film—Vampiros Lesbos—which was surprisingly good for what it is. I'm looking at his other films and holy loving balls he was prolific. Do you guys have any recommendations to narrow this down?

I enjoy Downtown, Faceless, Venus in Furs and have a particular soft spot for his entry into the Ilsa series: Ilsa, the Wicked Warden. I loves me some Lina Romay! Also his version of Jack the Ripper starring Klaus Kinski is wonderful! Doesn't make a lick of sense but it's got Kinski!

The 2nd has such a crazy premise and the 4th is just balls out crazy! The one with Cornelius and Zira is a nice story and all but it's boring, and the last one is just a mess. As for Radioactive Dreams, I found a VHS at a thrift shop and bought that fucker for a buck!

Fear of a Black Hat is like a funny version of CB4 and probably tops my list of most underrated comedies. How much you get out of it probably depends entirely on how into rap you were in the late 80s / early 90s; you'll miss a lot if you aren't at least passingly familiar with Compton's Most Wanted, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, PM Dawn, etc. The songs are not only funny, but legit good too (again, if you have a soft spot for early 90s rap) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1WFA0liN1o -- hilarious spot-on satire of that genre of rap songs.
