People who talk poo poo on Pumpkin Beers haven't had Good Gourd. They also have a poo poo ton of it in rum barrels this year, so hopefully those hit distribution. Also, as for Anti-Hero, Paul Proteus sent me some in a trade and it was god damned delicious. If I got it down here it would be my go to happy hour/shower beer alongside Jai Alai.

Two things to share. One: gently caress Rogue. What a shitball offer that would be laughed at by anyone except someone fresh out of college, even then they'd have to be hard up to accept this loving brutally lovely position. Good job Rogue making yourselves look even more like douchebags. The IT guys in the Reddit thread are having a blast. You can't make this poo poo up. Secondly, I happened into a 2006 Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien today. I decided to chill it and open it for myself and I'm glad I did. This is very good and exactly how I like my sours. Some cocoa and caramel are noted with fruity mildly sour overtones of cherries. This isn't as fruity as the 2009 I had a few months ago, but it's certainly an excellent beer and way too easy to drink at 11%.

Anyone with the skillset in their description could probably make almost double that in Portland at a place that has a far more sane on-call rotation. Yeah, wow, that is beyond offensive. "The Rogue Nation is always on the lookout for hardcore unemployables." I hope they mean it, cause that's literally the only demographic that is going to apply for this job. And not in the edgy way they're trying for. I was already done with Rogue but this is  worthy enough for me to start actively discouraging others from giving them money. I work in IT and have done the type of job they're describing. lol at less than 40k for that job in East Bunghole Iowa, let alone a major city.vvv edit: Yeah it's also a recipe for burnout being the only IT guy and having no formal budget because you're a ~~~rogue~~~. Folks on the Portland thread have reported that that job has been posted up 4 times in the last 5 years. I believe it. In other news, de Garde has descended into Bend. Having a gin barrel aged Brett pale ale, and man is it rad. The brewer is some kinda Einstein.

Parents brought me back a growler of superfluid from the Short's brewpub... Actually got two growlers of it poured by Joe Short himself. This stuff is probably the closest thing to sticking your nose into a big bag of fresh centennial and citra and taking a deep breath, only in an extremely pleasant liquid form. Probably the freshest I/IPA I've ever had. The only thing I didn't like about it was that after two pours, it really started to coat my mouth with a funny aftertaste. It was almost numbing, and definitely affected my palate for anything I tasted afterward. Even now, a couple hours later, I can still taste it.

Just got to drink some Gentlemen's Club, the Cigar City/Widmer collaboration beer that XxGirlKisserxX helped make. It's an oak-aged strong ale with cherry, orange, and lemon and meant to be an homage to the classic Old Fashioned cocktail. The Raven and Rose in PDX were serving 3 different barrel aged versions, Rye, Bourbon, and new Oak, along side an Old Fashioned cocktail. The Rye barrel aged version was especially good and they all had a similar flavor profile to the cocktail.

So I bought some sixpoint Apollo last night. The aftertaste tastes like bacon. Am I alone in this? Seems like it might be good with barbecue or something, but it was definitely different. Also found out that founders has started distributing to houston, so I picked up some all day IPA. The smell is awesome and has great citrus hops coming through the nose, but then you taste it and it seems to fall flat on its face in regards to the hops. I was down in Philly last night for a friend's birthday and found Perennial Fantastic Voyage on tap (which I really enjoyed, but did not get a lot of coconut out of it) and had myself a Flanders Flemish Red (always delicious). When I got home, I found a box from a friend of mine had arrived with this inside: As an East Coaster, I am pretty excited at the prospect of being able to drink a lot of those RR beers without getting gouged for $20/bottle.

Starting to think Lone Tree Brewing is becoming one of my favorite smaller CO breweries. I stopped by last night for the release of their Willow Creek Gran Cru Witbier which is essentially an imperial wit brewed with orange peel and lavender. I like to think of it as basically Imperial Blue Moon. Nose is citrusy and very mildly herbal with ephemeral lavender esters and it opens into a very straight forward orange-dominated taste that's backed up by a very mild and ultimately perfectly balanced hop bitterness that hints at just a bit of floral lavender on the finish. It's 9.7% but doesn't really taste it, the alcohol is most apparent in the syrupy feel that's frontloaded into the taste. I realize that I've gone fairly down the rabbit hole in that I'd throw brett at almost anything at this point, but I can't help but feel this would make an amazing sour. It's not a very complicated beer, but it is delicious. e: drat, too missed the whalepost. That's impressive.

What's with the Rogue hate beyond that admittedly lovely posting? I've been turned off of a lot of their hoppy selections because they seem kinda ashy and poorly malt-balanced and are unpleasant, but some stuff like their brown ale and juniper ale I'm kinda into.

Dead Guy, chocolate stout, and Shakespeare stout are pretty decent serviceable beers, but gently caress how they treat employees. Nice thing is that my local bar refuses to carry them because of things like this, but I don't know for how long they've done so.

CCB just had Cucumber Saison come out which is delicious, or so I here. I don't like cucumber and its really cucumbery so its just not for me. Others seem to loving love it though. Aside from the standard CCB offerings, you might also fine some Cubano style espresso ale. If there is a good bar around, you should be able to get CCB stuff on draft. Supposedly Funky Buddha is distributing state-wide, but right now is draft only, so you may get some Hop Gun or Mo Crusts/ Nib Smuggler if you are really lucky. Due South might also be distributing that far, but I doubt it.

Yesterday was amazing for me. Worked in the morning at one of my bars locations near Cleveland, and a customer brought me in a Heady Topper. Got called and asked to come into our Akron location in the evening, and one of my regulars brought me in a Zombie Dust and In The Name Of Suffering. I must have good karma or something. I drank the Heady Topper last night, and all I have to say is

I've been looking for a gateway sour for a while now having failed to find it in any of the few Cantillons I've tried and apparently Flanders Red is the way forward as I just had a Duchess de Bourgogne and loved it. Any suggestions for similar beers or which way I should head if I want to get more into the Lambics? They'll need to be Belgian as US sours just don't make their way over here at all.

I asked this same question and pretty much the easiest/best to get are Duchesse, Rodenbach Classic, Rodenbach Grand Cru, and Vichtenaar. I also heeded someone's recommendation on picking up a Cuvee Rene by Lindeman's and I'm about to open that up in a few. I enjoyed all of the former, though Rodenbach Grand cru was probably my faovrite with Duchesse being #2.

The fact is that Rogue is just a single point in a craft beer ocean now. 15-20 years ago, Rogue was in a small band of craft pioneers and so one could understand brand loyalty. Nowadays Rogue offers pretty much nothing unique nor do they represent the best of west coast craft beer. Dead Guy, Crustacean, Shakespeare--none of these are really that unique any more, you can locate analogues from breweries that doesn't abuse their employees with absolute ease. With craft beer being pretty big, you no longer are choosing between 10 or so craft breweries, you can now vote with your wallet to reward standouts and punish shitheads without much personal sacrifice. That's pretty much why people are happy to essentially boycott Rogue.
