The bass tone by itself is kinda.. Meh. But I think it blends pretty well with the guitars.

Actually, now that I think about it, does anyone know how people are getting these isolated bass tracks? I know it has something to do with the Guitar Hero/Rock Band stuff, which separates the tracks. I'm asking because it would be much easier to transcribe stuff that way (although I only have RB3 so far).

When you listen to the raw bass track you can hear he does some really nice stuff that is barely audible in released version. Nice tone too. I honestly spent more time listening to the guitars than the bass on those albums (Insert "... and Justice for All" joke here).

I have the most recent two (I think), and one has Dug Pinnick and the other has Geezer Butler...I think they do try to diversify. I had a subscription last year and I remember seeing guys like Avishai Cohen, Anthony Jackson, that guy from Rancid, some gospel guys, Nathan Watts.

On the other hand, I hope you like lots of ads and positive reviews for just about everything that gets sent to their office.

Opinion question: looking for a good set of strings for a short scale acoustic/electric bass, mostly to play unplugged. Some quick Googling shows me that some folks are leaning towards regular electric flat/tapewound strings, but I have precisely zero reference knowledge for this. No sense in posting to the new gear porn thread, but I finally invested in a used VT Bass to give the old Ashdown MAG600 a kick in the pants. Initially, I thought I'd just use the Box of Rock to give a little dirt; however, the drat thing would always sap my bottom end for some reason. I only realized, post purchase, that I was pretty much killing the preamp by running the Box through my effects loop, and could have preserved the signal, I guess, by putting it before the preamp. Welp.

No harm done, however. After introducing the VT Bass into the picture I no longer need the Ashdown preamp at all, to hell with it. I've dialed in some great tones, but I've mostly followed the settings for the trusty fliptop so as to get that tasty '66 sound. Completely changes my tone for the better, that little bit of dirt, and the touch of compression I've been needing since my last show where my sacred bottom G was lost to a tile floor.

As for the Box of Rock? Well, with the VT Bass pushing my bass, my guitarist made a smart move and asked me about boosting his signal. He pushes a little '65 Reverb, so he's been having difficulty getting drowned out because I'm still pretty new at setting levels. He's also losing a lot of mojo in those uppermost notes. So, now we have me with the VT, my guitarist with the BoR (more like the SHO, since he prefers the Fender tones) and my drummer even splurged on some new heads and his preferred sticks, to replace the crappy backups he's been using. Today's practice was like unleashing a whole new animal.

I wasn't intending to buy a bass, but the combination of discounted price plus how good it felt in my hands was too good to pass up.

Ibanez SRA550. I have spent more time with this bass in the past few weeks than I had with the lovely Yamaha starter bass in the several years that I owned it. Just waiting for the strings I ordered to arrive and I'll give it a good cleanup and setup adjustment, although it still plays very well with the years-old Elixirs that were fitted in the factory.
It does have an issue with a hissing sound when the neck pickup is used, the bridge one is fine but as soon as the neck is blended in there is a noticeable hiss. Doesn't seem to be grounding because it doesn't go away when I touch the strings, but the hiss does amplify the closer my thumb gets to the mounting screw in that pickup. The noise happens regardless of the positioning of the treb/mid/bass dials, with multiple different amps and inputs, and with different 9V batteries. I haven't owned anything with active pickups on it before, is this sort of behaviour caused by the preamp? Reviews for this bass called the factory preamp "OK at best", and googling around shows a lot of other people with crappy preamps having similar noise issues. Is this just a matter of buying a new preamp and soldering it in place? Or could it be just a wire in the existing loom that needs a bit of attention?

Picked these up yesterday as a birthday present to myself!

L: 1987 Charvel 2B (Jap build)
R: 1978 Yamaha BB-800 (Jap build)

The Charvel is, well, a Charvel, rather average but looks mean, I haven't really got into it but it might be a great experimental bass some day.

The Yamaha is AWESOME, everything works fine and the neck is solid and straight, I chucked some ErnieBall Cobalts onto it and let the thing fly, they used to call these
a 'P-Bass Killer' and I can see why. I don't need a p-bass now, and all it cost me was $180AU...

Sorry for the badly saturated picture, my camera is getting up there in years!

I've had this bass for a little while now, but it's my most recent purchase so it still counts. I had never used a 6 string bass before this one, but I had dabbed in 5 strings a few times. I started hanging out with some funk/jazz dudes recently and they recommended me to try and start playing a 6 string bass. I went with this Peavey Grind Bass because I had played the 5 string equivilant of it before and I really liked it (I also love their amps). I have to say this thing is pretty drat good, especially for the price. I had to adjust the action quite a bit and one of the knobs came loose right out of the package and had to be re-tightened, but other than that it's a great bass. The sound is great all across the board (heh) and the whole construction feels very solid.

I've had this thing for about two months now and I don't think I can ever go back to playing 4 string basses because they now feel like skinny playthings in my hand. :(

No experience with that guitar in particular, but Eastwood makes some decent stuff. Price is about spot-on for the quality, but you're primarily paying for niche body-styles that no one else produces. The tone on the ones I've played has been alright, nothing mind blowing, but again, you're paying for the style.

If you have the cash, go for it. Anyone else who makes a Bass VI style guitar is going to charge at least double that price (that I know of, at least). Lakland premiered a prototype at NAMM over a year ago, but I've yet to see one hit the streets. They might be special order only. If it's US-made (which it probably will) it'd be over $2k, if they somehow managed to do a Skyline version, it'd be around $1500 more than likely. So yeah, the Eastwood is probably your best bet if you want to dive into the world of a Bass VI.

Got myself a Squier Jaguar Special! Was reduced from £300 to £230 with free next day shipping, I would have been insane not to take that up.

Now I know everyone already knows about how nice Vintage Modified Squiers are, but let me reiterate: this is hands down the nicest bass I've ever played. Action was perfect out of the box, the neck is incredibly fast (and thin how I like it), the fretwork is great and as for the sound itself...it's amazing. With the P+J pickups both set to full and the tone about a third of the way up, this thing has the most insane alt rock growl to it; I can't wait until my Sansamp arrives and I get to see how it sounds driven.

TL;DR: Squier Jaguar VM Special; go loving buy it.

I don't know what the street price is on the Eastwood, but the Fender Pawn Shop Bass VI is only $799 - http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PawnBassVIBk

And the Schecter Hellcat VI is $749 - http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/schecter-guitar-research-hellcat-vi-electric-guitar

After missing out on a couple things over the past few months I finally got a deal on craigslist today:

My best guess is that it is a 70s Epiphone ET-285 - http://epiphonewiki.com/index.php/ET-Series_Basses#ET-285
Unfortunately at some point in the past the body and headstock face got sprayed black (whoever did it did an excellent job though), but if you hold it up to the light just right you can see the Epiphone logo on the headstock. The controls are noisy and will need to be redone, and it could use some shielding, but other than that it is in great shape. I was most surprised by the neck, it is so easy to play and feels great. $110, including a gig bag and a small Peavey combo that hopefully I can flip for $20.

Touche salesman. I completely forgot about Fender's pawn-shop line...

But Fender is also labeling it as a baritone guitar, wonder if it's tuned a full octave down like the others. Looks like it's also using some lighter strings topping out at .084 rather than .095 like most others.

I'm pretty sure that it's strung baritone from the factory (down a fifth) but can be setup as a Bass VI with the proper set of strings (and some nut filing I assume).

Strongly seconding the LaBellas. The TIs didn't have enough string-tension for my liking. The LaBellas are just loving butter.

I wasn't aware they'd come out with a version to string through the body... It's not just LaBella, most any flat shouldn't be strung through the body, it can break the core. But that's interesting if they've developed one that's less rigid.

Also, be sure when clipping the strings to the proper length that you measure, bend the string where you plan to cut and get a good crease in there before you snip it. This'll keep you from breaking the core as well.

Oh, David...
That double Baer rig is dope. I'm still trying to decide if I want to take the plunge on one of those or the new Bergantino 1x15.

I've spent some quality time with my Streamliner, and it's looking like a keeper. It's definitely the most unintuitive amp I've tried, though. The controls are very interactive, and don't behave at all like the controls on most amps. There is so much low end on tap with this thing that I like to cut both the bass and the mids at 220hz, then boost the volume to make up the difference. With the gain button in, I can get pretty close to SVT territory, though the breakup on the Streamliner gets a bit farty. Talkbass users recommend putting a 5751 in the first preamp slot in place of the stock tube, so I may try that to see if it tightens up the low end.

Um... I'd say take it easy and don't stress too much because it will gently caress up your playing. I don't know how good your technique is but if you don't know a part for a song it won't be terribly hard to fake it as long as you know the general chord progression. Also practice whatever you can with the metronome, trust me it helps.
