This game has been sitting in my Steam library for a while and I finally started playing it this weekend. I love this game so far. Everything about it is right up my alley. The only problem now is an occasional CTD, but worse than that, the music/sound can cut out. I have missed some pretty funny stuff as a result of this. In Act One When Geralt and Triss are getting love crazy in the elf pool, the baddies are up above and they talk about being able to hear the love making if you get close enough to the statue and are in love yourself or something... I am guessing the Dwarf, when all alone, heard Geralt and Triss going at it, but my sound for that didn't play. Anyway to fix these sound issues? Is it a memory leak and I should reboot? All current drivers, I have an X-Fi sound blaster, but play with headphones. I had Dolby Live enabled, so maybe I will try to disable that when I get home tonight. Funny thing is I wasn't having any problems until around that specific point in Act 1, then it started happening more frequently.

Did you read the translations, or the real deal in another language than English? German translation, the last book came out in early 2011 actually! I'd say the second to last book is the worst in that regard, the last one jumps around a lot toobut stays long enough in each scene so you understand the whole story without having to think too much about it.

Holy poo poo the Kayran is hard with the rebalance mod. I'm so used to relying on Quen for that fight, and the mod makes it work different enough as to be useless for this boss.

What? Just stun it with the dumb trap sign and hack things off, it's just as easy as it's always been.

Ok I guess I'm just awful at this game because I've never found the Kayran easy.

I died twice to the Kayran on my second playthrough. Oh, and approximately a dozen times (+3 crashes, including one when I won the fight. Almost made me give up on the game) on the first playthrough. It and Leo were pretty much the only fight to manage that the second time around.

As far as I remember, the hardest part of the Kayran fight for me was when you run up some little cliff to do that little Hollywood stunt to ride on top of it. Somehow I never learned how to dodge its attack on that part of the fight.

What difficulty were you guys playing on? Is it just me or is the Kayran trap not worth it? I always seem to get hit if I try to use it because it takes so long to set up. And in a fight with no Quen sign when you can take 2-3 hits only...

# ? Jul 2, 2013 17:18 |

The trap cuts off one of the tentacles so I'd say it is worth it.

# ? Jul 2, 2013 17:21 |

Yeah but I can two-hit kill a tentacle with aerondight and I usually don't get hit after pulling a yrden. I must be doing something very weird/wrong considering how different my experience with this fight is compared to everyone else's.

I never use the trap its really not necessary yrrden works just as well the fight really isnt that hard its just if you do actually get hit your poo poo gets wrecked.

# ? Jul 2, 2013 17:57 |
The fight is a joke if you turn difficult QTE's off. Which you should because QTE's are the spawn of Satan.

I've never had the option off, so some tool tips were confusing. Like the button to dodge the dragon at the beginning. Apparently with the no hard QTEs option you just run down the bridge without having to do anything. Which is what I did. I had no idea you had to dodge it's claws or whatever.

Has the combat mod gotten its patch yet? Everything I find on it has it listed as version 1.0, which although I liked all the changes it claimed to have, in practice everything just kind of felt unresponsive, and then Geralt went into a modelling pose. Did I install it incorrectly or something? Edit: Also, Geralt is supposed to block automatically as long as I'm not attacking or rolling, right? I haven't had a single attack get blocked yet. The blocking works for me. It's just buggy. I haven't seen any potions or oils last for an hour though, and apparently for some people Philippa Eilhart is headless. And no, the patch isn't out yet.

I think I'll just wait for the patch, though. Thanks!

Yeah I wound up getting rid of the mod and reinstalling, I like quite a few things it does but not enough for me to put up with all the weird stuff.

Welp, beat the Kayran. In desperation I turned all my graphics settings down. My current computer is kind of crap, and while it's normally fine, it lagged a decent amount in the Kayran fight. It was just a tiny bit smoother without the bells and whistles, and oddly the half second or so of extra response time made the fight much, much easier. As to the mod, it's mostly working for me so I'm enjoying it. I just desperately hope the patch is compatible with my saved games.

If you can handle not having it, I think SSAO is one of the easiest things to dump to get a significant increase in performance.

Well into Act 2 now. Letho is much easier with this mod. It's weird playing it through a second time and catching things I wouldn't even know to look for my first go through. For example, this exchange (Iorveth path spoilers) Right after Saskia's cured and Philippa is checking her out. Philippa: What is your name? Saskia: Sa...Saesenth- Phiippa:-What do they call you? Saskia: Saskia. They really thought this whole thing out.

So, since the Witcher 2 is on sale on Xbox Live I might as well ask if it is a decent port or should it be avoided? Also, since the first game was on PC only, which means that savegame transfers is out of the question, do you get some kind of choices before the game started regarding the events from the first game (such as if Adda survided and so on..).

Honestly Witcher 2 looks great even on low settngs. Incidentally, is anyone else finding the modded game suddenly hugely laggy when your adrenaline bar is fully charged or you have high enough toxicity that the green poo poo starts appearing on screen? Also I could swear that stairs and ramps are less cooperative than they used to be, but I have no idea why the mod would cause that.

I got W2 when it came out, and since then I've started a new game and got to Flotsam... three times? Four? Then I've always dropped it after an hour of frustrated fiddling with the video settings. But I started (again) with the combat rebalance mod a few days ago, and some combination of game patch and video driver bumped my framerate up by 20fps or so (or maybe just smoothed it out, I dunno), and now it's goddam gorgeous, on mostly max everything. My system is modest - GTX460 1gb, Phenom ii triple core at 3.2 ghz and 3 gig ram, playing at 1920x1080.

The mod removes the recoil from blocking for you and enemies, so the attack will still follow through smoothly even with a successful block, and the block's damage reduction will still be applied.

I've tried playing it with 4gb, and it gets really bogged down, but when I upgraded to 8gb it runs much more smoothly. 6gb might be ok too.

Ludwig van Halen posted:If you can stick more RAM in there it would be really helpful. Thanks - what I meant was that it's actually running perfectly on my so-so specs after being fully patched up. Anyway I'm on win7 32 bit, so 3 gig is the most it can recognise. I've got a copy of 64 bit windows kicking around, but I have yet to find a really good argument for upgrading. I've always been a little skeptical of the performance benefits once you get past 4 gig in non-specialised applications - I thought that 2 gig was the biggest process Windows can handle?

# ? Jul 8, 2013 05:21 |

Its probably more the side benefit of having RAM available for windows or performance hogging stuff like antivirus. I doubt any game uses more than 1.5Gb of RAM at most

If you're still using a Voodoo of any number then chances are you aren't going to run The Witcher on it

I was pretty impressed that the giant siege tower in the prologue was based on the colossal siege tower used by Demetrius Poliorcetes at the Siege of Rhodes that was so huge that even today, historians cannot figure out how it was moved.
