I've tried a culture win twice now, both times getting complete religion/ideology/whatever dominance, but the first time I get one rear end in a top hat who blows away in culture production to the point I may as well go for a diplomacy victory, and the second time one jerk who refuses to give me open borders to let my multiple 5k+ great musicians in to get the victory within a reasonable time frame. I mean I could go to war but ugh gently caress moving all those units around it's such a hassle I'd rather just claim I won the moral victory and start a new game.

I'm liking the mechanics a lot at least, it's fun to send out an armada of archaeologists and pillage the world.

One thing I noticed is that I started a religion somewhat late (I think the 3rd or 4th one in the world) and it barely spread at all. My second largest city is ... I think 7 tiles away from my capital and in 50+ turns I only got up to 4 followers + 8 pantheon worshippers. I'm going to have to check later to see why the pressure is so low, even after picking up Itinerant Preachers.

Can you do concert tours at cities from civs you're at war against? I can just imagine your military having its sole purpose be escorting all these bands around to enemy cities in order to conduct unauthorized concerts.

Does Brave New World improve performance in any way? Vanilla Civilization V as well as Gods & Kings needed an annoying amount of time to process turns for me after the mid-game.

Turn times were significantly improved with the last patch, which was just before BNW released.

If they get unhappy enough, their cities will defect to the closest influential Civ, I believe.

It's possible that pressure mechanics have changed with the introduction of trade route pressure, but if all you have is your Holy City this seems normal. You usually have to jumpstart the first few cities with a missionary before you get enough pressure to do anything; the only exception is if you can manage to convert a tiny city nearby early on, but I'm guessing that if you've got a later religion your core cities are all too large to convert quickly.

Eh, I don't know if things changed in the last few patches, but from the games I played last year getting Itinerant Preachers was enough to spread religion like crazy without having to bother with missionaries often.

I posted a fix in the last thread, but it altered the map so much that it wasn't as fun any more. The fix I posted a couple pages back works ok (there's still going to be some land at the seam, but it won't be in the middle of a big continent or anything), with the only problem being that it does make the landmasses slightly more blobby, but it's not too noticeable.

The color palette is definitely pretty crowded now. I'm playing as Morocco and one of my neighbours is the Aztecs, and two of my other neighbours are Brazil and Arabia.

e: At least the confusion here doesn't have any unfortunate implications like Ethiopia's does.

More, Austria has to outbid you and become their ally so you just need to keep your CS relations very high and you're safe. Venice doesn't give a poo poo, if they can get a great merchant into the city state's borders it's theirs regardless of ally/friend status.

The strongest reformation belief if you have decent faith generation is easily the one that lets you buy every type of great person. For culture victories you can just spam musicians and maybe crank out a writer to get a tenet quickly, or you can toss out scientists like no tomorrow. The rest of the Piety tree is still mediocre but reformation alone makes up for it.

That's how I did a tourism victory as Morocco. Got a desert start, opened piety and shrine to lock down desert folklore, went Mosque of Djenne -> Borobudur for early religious dominance, teched my way towards hotels/airports/archaeologists, and spammed musicians on anyone who actually was generating culture.

Yeah, I just played a game and my jaw dropped seeing the Terracotta army change. Its a very tempting wonder now, definitely something that can be planned around.

I really, really like BNW so far. Tourism still feels a bit slow, but I did win before I could do a diplomacy victory (but only barely, and I was slouching on my science output too). Ideologies feel rather unimpressive, to be honest, with a few tiny exceptions (that require ridiculous investments to make a reality). Though I have to say, the moment I hit the industrial age, there was a LOT of micromanaging I had to start doing. BNW really did deliver on making the end-game a lot more engaging.

And I like the whole great works theme thing. Its a really cute sort of mini-game that you can tinker with to make your tourism grow. I wish tourism had more effects than just purely being a cultural victory thing, though. As it stands, there's no reason to every try for any tourism (as it doesn't defend against enemy tourism until you hit ideologies) unless you WANT a cultural victory. Perhaps if there were scaling bonuses to relationships as your culture dominated another civ's culture...

In any case, there is a whole slew of new things to keep an eye on, which is nice. In my last game, I played a cultural Portugal and managed to fend off my little side of the continent while pumping out ridiculous levels of tourism. Once the industrial era hit, I picked up Freedom... and the Shoshone picked up Order. My crushing influence over them threw them into revolt, and I picked up their TWENTY FIVE POP city for free! It was quite amazing, to be honest, though the city was in revolt for a very, very long time. Still amusing.

It doesn't duplicate your army it just gives you one of each type of unit. That early on, it's like 3-4 units. It's good but not great, and it doesn't seem to give them any promotions.

That's correct, it increases the effective range of pressure from 10 to 13, but it doesn't increase the actual amount of pressure. So IP is good for creating interlocking fields of pressure, but it doesn't help you with those critical first few spreads. Even when I go IP, I usually build a missionary or two early.

I don't understand the new Teracotta Army at all. Did they just think it was too boring before? Why would it do what it does now? It makes no earthly sense.

I still don't fully understand how BNW works (I'm in the classical era of my first BNW game) but wouldn't something that functions the same way it did before, but then gives you some kind of boost that interacts with archaeologists once you get them better reflect what the Teracotta Army actually is and still be more interesting than just being a super culture building?
