I've got a spy in Vienna while Maria Theresa's defending it against Ashurbanipal. He has the city surrounded by musketmen and crossbowmen but is never attacking. She's slowly picking them off each turn. As one of Austria's major trade partners I'm happy, but I'm sad that Ashurbanipal's AI seems content with keeping its soldiers in the line of fire for no obvious reason. Maybe he's sending siege units from far away and is just holding the fort?

So, I've seen a lot of people post about how AIs are having happiness and money problems, or don't expand like they used to - do we have any hard numbers on what their difficulty modifiers are now? I'd look in the files myself if I wasn't phoneposting.

I think I'll still go back and play Civ IV BTS because that's just such an incredibly good strategy experience that still hasn't been topped. But BNW is really good in its own right. I just hope that Firaxis can issue out a balance patch or two in order to work out some issues. But knowing Firaxis' history with patching, I won't hold my breath. It's still really good as-is, thankfully. I think if they finally fixed some bone headed AI issues, and did some balancing touches, it would end up surpassing BTS in my eyes. But there's a lot of little stupid things holding Civ V back.

Gully Foyle posted:Now, all of the 'force' on the civ is compared to all of the 'defense' on the civ. If force > defense, then the civ will start to suffer happiness penalties. There are different levels of this: I was dominant with 5 out of 7 other Civs and I never saw Resistance or Revolutionary from anyone. Everyone else's culture and tourism sucked, except for Bismark's, and literally everyone else except for Persia was Order while I was Freedom. How the hell is it even possible to get anyone to those levels? I did see some happiness penalties, but it wasn't enough to make anyone unhappy overall - and that was on King, so good loving luck if that had been any of the higher difficulties. By the time I had enough delegates to where I actually could have passed Freedom as the global ideology, which could have made a difference, I was close enough to a diplo victory to go for that instead. Just very strange in such a culture-dominant game that I never saw city flips, revolutions, or even anyone switching ideologies.

That and I probably put 20 hours into this game a week at the minimum and don't have any cards, yet played War of the Roses for a few hours and have 3.

Patronage seems like it's much more powerful than it used to be. With nothing more than a small self-built navy of like 3 melee ships and 2 ranged ships, along with gifts from random Militaristic city-states, I was #1 in pointy sticks in my Indonesia diplomacy run on Emperor by the midgame and never lost that position. Building no units and having the best military in the world doesn't seem like a thing that should happen. I also wish there was a way to send an AI a sternly-worded email when they cut a trade route that's going to you but belongs to someone else that they're at war with. I mean, I get the little "Montezuma cut a trade route belonging to Pedro II that was going to the city of blah" notification. It seems weird to not be able to complain about it. (Not that I expect the complaining to do anything. Monty kept bullying Kuala Lumpur, which I had pledged to protect, and I'd send him a sternly worded email about it each time, but despite the interface telling me it would worsen relations and might lead to war Monty never shifted away from Friendly to me.

Whoever suggested small continents as the best map type, I'm beginning to agree. I used to be all about fractal but I'm playing a game as Venice on it and the amount of sea routes I have is amazing and my bought city-states are perfectly distributed. I like how there's actually a very good mix of city-states on the larger continents as well as on far flung islands.

€30 right out the window. Thanks GMG and Steam. I've played Civ sporadically over the years (I quite vanilla Civ 5, because it kept crashing), but I never really got the concept of gold. How important is it, and how should you use it, especially in the early game?

In other news, it may just be me, but it seems like the Honor opener is now a great first policy thanks to the screaming barbarian hordes constantly tearing up the early-game map. You can rake in a ton of early culture with it if you're at all proactive about using your military, which also makes Liberty actually competitive for a change.

I have an evil idea for a strategy: Play Byzantium, go Piety and rush a great prophet out ASAP. Take Pagodas, Cathedrals and Mosques. Take the reformation belief that gives you two tourism per faith-bought building. Fill up your cities with these buildings and laugh about how you won a culture victory in the bronze age.

Honestly at this point, my biggest complaints seem to have been addressed. My only minor issues is that the AI could still use (and always will) a little more tweaking (but it is far better than it was at launch), and I miss having a privateer unit that could operate discreetly (I had a lot of fun in Civ 3 loving with people's trade routes that way). I also really wish there was a way to trade maps (or something similar to research agreements for maps, no, not open borders). At least now when you get satellites, the entire map shows up. When that didn't happen at launch, that pissed me off more than anything else. Handsome Ralph fucked around with this message at 14:40 on Jul 12, 2013 |

I want a mod that plays each great work of music when you make them. It is total bullshit that each great work of art actually pops up as they're created, and then Bach writes his Brandenburg Concerti and the same stupid midi jingle plays. Total bullshit. I want the soundtrack to switch to whatever great work I've just created.
