Women get custody as a side effect of the legacy of being considered as belonging in the home with the children instead of working, the fact that it works against men in certain cases doesn't make it misandry

I think most of our ilk have come to the conclusion that that's a valid point and that the great tragedy of MRA-ism is that behind all the aggressive sexual frustration and misogyny, they actually do have a handful of legitimate grievances about gender-specific ways in which men get hosed over--they just make the insane jump to blame feminism rather than the actual culprit, traditional gender roles, whose greatest foes are, ironically, feminists. It's kind of a sad affair apart from how goddamn risible they are.

The push towards both violence and virility proving sex being the top. The best way to address these issues is to realize that working towards feminist goals helps to fix the problems men face. Tearing down traditional gender roles and leveling the playing field will make everyone's life better. The whole "RAAR MEN ARE THE REAL VICTIMS" bullshit just reinforces traditional, regressive thinking. Magres posted:Honestly, I wish it were socially acceptable for men to wear makeup. I'd like for it to be socially acceptable to paint my nails though. I did that for about four years and loved it.

What "expectations" are you referring to that can't be explained by patriarchal thinking? Are you talking about things like being financially successful (because women belong in the kitchen, not in the workforce), or how they need to be macho soldier men (because women can't hack it in the military), or how they need to be emotionally dead on the outside (because showing emotion is womanly, and women are irrational)? Like El Anansi said, a shitton of these "expectations" you're going on about being "misandry" are based in traditional gender roles at best, misogyny at worst.

I've seen a lot of assumptions that males can't be in child care because it's assumed they're pedophiles. So that sucks. I'm reluctant to say Misandry is imbedded in the culture, I think that's more...intense than he meant. But acting like every bad thing that happens to men is actually just misogyny doesn't gather you a lot of followers. The self-flagellation that a lot of liberal white males go through is normal but a frustrating experience because it doesn't really impress anybody or get anything done.

It's not necessarily misandry, but things like this can often be tied back to traditional gender roles. The implication that a man can't care for children without being a pedophile is pretty easy to trace back to the idea that women are more nurturing (or the only ones capable of it) and if a man cares for a child that's not his own, he must have other motivations*. It definitely is lovely, and is a form of discrimination against men in child care, but it's important to look for the root cause and not stop at the surface symptom. On another point, I don't think that self-flagellation (I'M SORRY THAT I IDENTIFY AS MALE) is that important. I think it's more important that people should understand why some things are skewed against men in our society**. * N.B. I have no idea what the men/women/transfolk pedophile breakdown is. ** It's often because the role in question was seen as a woman's role (raising children, having feelings), or not fit for the delicate creatures that women are (military service). Also I'm fully prepared to be wrong about the importance of SWCM self-flagellation.

A lot of it just seems to come off like dismissing men's problems as illegitimate. I know that's not what you mean but it comes off as "oh come on don't gripe, women still have it harder", which while true we all know "there's worse suffering" doesn't make your problems go away. I know that's not what you mean but it comes off as "oh come on don't gripe, women still have it harder", which while true we all know "there's worse suffering" doesn't make your problems go away. I'm not even a straight white male. I think men's problems tend to get brushed aside because as far as feminists (myself included) are concerned, most of those problems will vanish on their own as we break down the patriarchy, traditional gender roles, and the mystique of the male machismo. Both of these things (I would argue male machismo especially) negatively impact men in a huge way - the fact that it's not really socially acceptable for men to show emotion other than happiness and anger is undoubtedly horrendous for men's mental well-beings (which would in part explain the higher suicide rate), and the "oh women are fragile and we have to provide for them and they belong at home taking care of the kids" is, to me, very obviously linked to men's higher workplace mortality (I'm a manly man gotta do the dangerous stuff so the delicate womenfolk don't have to), custody battles (in the link someone posted earlier, unless I was misreading it, even in cases where both parents contest for custody, it was pretty heavily slanted in the mom's favor) are an easy explanation, and higher homelessness because "we can't have women on the street! Their fragile little selves just can't take that kind of rough life" and we wind up with distorted capacity for homelessness relief for women vs men. Similar idea with physical violence between the genders - it's not acceptable to resort to violence for no reason, but the idea that women are weaker than men partly explains why it is so much more socially unacceptable for a man to hit a woman than for a woman to hit a man. If the genders become truly equal and women stop being treated as weak, there is no reason for many of men's problems to continue to perpetuate themselves. Like, even knowing all that, when I think of inter-gender violence, women hitting men is not acceptable, but men hitting women is still viscerally rage inducing. This stuff is extremely hard to combat because it's heavily ingrained in us and self-perpetuating, and getting derailed on addressing specific symptoms instead of attacking the root disease only makes it harder. Related, I haven't read it much but it looks good and our local Goon Feminism thread recommends it as an examination of how Feminism addresses men's problems and benefits us (it seems to specifically focus on male machismo, or at least its initial premise is on that subject) is http://www.achilleseffect.com/. The feminism thread OP has a chunk that summarizes as "You're a guy? Cool! Come be a feminist with us, we want to help you too, and here's how Feminism benefits both genders! " and has some good info on this stuff. Magres fucked around with this message at 07:48 on Jul 25, 2013 |

Unfortunately they didn't succeed in saving his life. That Republican scaremongers immediately jump to claims that Stevens was tortured and/or raped says a lot about what they think of Muslims.

TGetting to say "If this is a 'manpurse', it's a Nazi Killing Manpurse" never gets old and has never failed to shut people up On the other hand, the only reason that works is because it plays into machismo ("rah my purse is for murdering bad people and that makes it tough and cool") and glorification of war. Maybe instead I'll just give people the finger when they make fun of my bag. People who are stupid enough to scoff at "lol manpurse" and enforce traditional gender roles like that don't deserve to know my bag's awesome history and have bad opinions that aren't worth caring about.

The tool being used is called a picana electrica (a modified cattle prod), which sees almost no use outside of Argentina.
