I'd pay triple for an instrumental version of this album. Swanö's vocals fit Nightingale's style to a T, but he's totally unlistenable on this track.

Haha I just put on an album by this band (Evernight) right before opening this thread. Thanks for the recs!
Heh, yeah I suppose it doesn't quite stand out that much on Evernight, but then on the other hand they have stuff like this, on which the album- and song titles don't leave much room for doubt. :v: Used to listen to them quite a bit some years ago, but they've kinda drifted off my radar since that.

MDF posted the first round of bands on Facebook on Saturday morning. Looks good. I've heard occasional mentions of an Exit-13 reunion at MDF for years, perhaps now that Hemdale are doing it they should do it too.

I hope they manage to avoid the annual fuckup with black metal bands - awful sound missing one guitar for Vinterland this year, Carpathian Forest being unable to make it last minute, and Unanimated cancelling last year.

I just kinda got into the band Periphery (second album is the one I like) and apparently the genre is called djent. However I impulse bought a CD from the band "Monuments", and it kinda.. sucks.

Periphery is quite melodical, has a decent harmonic bass backing and is most of the times very regular when it comes to rythm (if you count with it - not that this is a prerequisite but rythm has to have a concept). The bassdrum might do its thang but nonetheless. There are also many moments on that album which are very clever.

Now it might be the recording quality, but I don't think Monuments bassist or producer grasps the concept of what he is supposed to do and so just relies (most of the time) on playing a monotone line (and the good parts which are in most songs, like "Degenerate" or "Uncollective", are almost arranged like a bass solo from the production side and it breaks apart very quickly because of the imposed restriction on any harmonic run).
More or less much of that CD is just a rythmic exercise of the drums and the guitar with some background noise but without any harmonic resolution or musical quality. It's actually rather annoying because you go "this is a good rythm, why do you not do something with it". I mean it works for lifting weights, but it isn't actually enjoyable to just listen to like Periphery is...

I know literally nothing about metal, the other metal band I like is Disillusion (Sleep of the Restless Hours is one of my fav songs of all time).

So what are some good Prog Metal bands in the style of Periphery (or Disillusion for that matter) but not in the style of Monuments?

I don't really like Periphery or most of the current "djent" bands, but their progenitors, SikTh, Fellsilent (which became Tesseract, which you might like, and Monuments), and even Textures are all good bands.

Tesseract is great, seconding that choice. Animals as Leaders for djenty instrumental goodness.

It's not djenty at all and I'm biased because they're my favorite band, but if you like progressive metal "Colors" from Between theBuried and Me is basically the progressive metal magnum opus as far as I'm concerned

Yeah they're cool dudes. I preordered Grind the Ocean and got a t shirt with it but it's too big for me to wear now that I've weight, but the design is so cool I keep it around anyway. They remind me a lot of SikTh but without the rawness and misanthropy. New album is soonish. Another band in that vein is Aliases, where guitarist Pin went after Sikth ended.
Their first album has some good songs, but the vocalist was ok, second album will have a new one, but I haven't heard any updates on it in months. Here's something off the first release: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-KQM0k40R0

My favorite djent band is Meshuggah, I dunno if you guys have heard of them, they're a bit obscure.

In all seriousness, Intronaut sometimes gets labeled as "djent" (although I wholly disagree with the genre association), and they tour with bands like Meshuggah and whatever so you might enjoy their poo poo.

You didn't really expand on why you didn't like them, but chances are you saw them on a more recent tour where they played songs from their new album exclusively. Their more recent material is softer than their previous albums and a lot of people either love it or hate it. I'd recommend checking out their earlier material, like the two songs I posted, as well as other songs from Prehistoricisms or even Void, if you're more into the sludgy, tech-metal (another term I hate) thing.

Intronaut for me were a very gradual affair; I first listened to them when they released Void and I thought that was a pretty drat good album, albeit kinda rough sounding. I was pretty impressed with Prehistoricisms and thought it was their best work to date, but still nothing really seemed to click. Then Valley of Smoke came out and while I was initially lukewarm on that as well, I really grew to love it upon repeated listens. It's now probably my favorite album of theirs. I dunno, they tend to do the whole jazz metal thing really well, mainly because they have kind of a mammoth rhythm section (both bass and drums), who seem to know what the gently caress they're doing when it comes to fusing jazz with metal.

Their new album is a bit... weird, in that I have some issues with it, but overall it's pretty drat enjoyable. I can definitely see why someone not familiar with their earlier, more metal material, might be turned off upon hearing it, though. Like I said, check out Void and Prehistoricisms and see if that sound is more up your alley.
