raruler posted:lorf if your list doesn't include lois mcmaster bujold or ursula leguin for anyone who hasn't read the classics of the 1960s: ursula le guin's scifi is legit awesome but very, very political ala ayn rand. only it's an ayn rand who can actually write, and didn't grow up in a soviet hellhole, and cares whether other human beings suffer basically the bizarro ayn rand (she also wrote fantasy but the scifi is the really fun stuff)
# ? Aug 1, 2013 21:14 |
what did lois mcmaster bujold write that is worth reading i tried starting two of her novels and they both devolved into "mary sue and the space wizards !!!11!" or "mary sue and the space guys with swords!!11!" really fast
# ? Aug 1, 2013 21:15 |
your problem is that you started the vorkosigan books at the beginning, before bujold realized that cordelia was a bit of a mary sue and proceeded to never use her as a protagonist ever again
# ? Aug 1, 2013 21:23 |
Barryar was alright but anything else with Cordelia should be skipped.
# ? Aug 1, 2013 21:26 |
that would be the only other Cordelia book, Shards of Honor, which was the first she wrote. if you're going to read them, I'd suggest reading them in internal chronological order (not publication) and starting with Cetaganda. only go back to the beginning of the series if you really liked them.

le guin is the bizarro rand because she can write and is a good person, in much the same way that banks was the anti-pournelle

i watched lynchdune immediately after finishing the first book about 3 years ago and it was so loving disappointing. i couldn't even enjoy it as a joke saw oblivion tonight and it was a p dece movie. watch it if you liked moon. in fact i would say its a cross between moon and independence day if that makes it sound more appealing.

# ? Aug 2, 2013 05:53 |

oblivion was okay but i felt they could have done so much more with the setting and backstory they established, i dunno it's like they went to so much trouble to create a really interesting and beautiful sci-fi universe and then just filled it with some low-rent pkd ripoff story still worth watching though

oic, i didn't know that. it's a very pretty movie, both visual and sound, so if you have a kickass home theater system or something it's probably best to get the nicest quality copy you can.
