Hey, the sarcastic sentence I typed above equally applies here. Not all conservatives are terrorists and no one is claiming that, but right-wing terrorism is a real thing and a real danger, and despite some Republican legislators' attempts to raise a fuss about it, because there are far-right (and yes, sometimes far-left) extremists out there who could potentially cause all kinds of harm. Have to deny that, because Team Conservative is always good and perfect and Team LIEberal is always evil and terrible. Never mind that we are literally talking about terrorism that happens in real life, and ignoring it potentially means letting people get killed.

The funny part is that its actually the military defining the Ft. Hood shooting as workplace violence so the victims don't receive Purple Hearts and thus get screwed out of the VA benefits that come with the medal.

When people complain about political correctness I like to use the reaction to the 2009 Homeland Security report on right-wing terrorism. There are domestic terror groups in the US, they are actively looking for returning veterans. These terrorists know that veterans have a tough time when they get out of the service, they know that a lot of veterans have mental health problems, they know that the government isn't very good about taking care of veterans. These terror groups want to take advantage of our returning vets when they're vulnerable because they want people with combat training.

But you can't say that on TV, it's just not politically correct.

It might not be a perfect tactic but it directly attacks the idea that PC is a left wing thing.

FBI agents arrest Richard Schmidt, the owner of a sporting goods store in Bowling Green, Ohio, for trafficking in counterfeit goods and discover a cache of 18 weapons in his home and store, including AR-15 assault rifles, 9 mm and Sig Sauer pistols and shotguns, and more than 40,000 rounds of ammunition. Schmidt is unable to own the weapons legally because he is a felon who served 13 years for murdering a Latino man and wounding two others in a 1989 traffic dispute. They also find evidence of Schmidt’s neo-Nazi views, including video and Nazi paraphernalia, and the Anti-Defamation League identifies him as a long-time member of the neo-Nazi National Alliance. And officials discover a notebook they say Schmidt was using to track Detroit area Jewish and African-American leaders, apparently as a prelude to some kind of attack. Schmidt is indicted in Toledo in January 2013 on three federal counts of possessing illegal firearms, body armor and ammunition, and one count of trafficking in counterfeit goods, and pleads not guilty.

Didn't hear about this at the time, but what a delightful birthday present this arrest was for little ol' Jewish me!

I'm sure though that there were people who didn't view this as a thwarted potential terror attack but rather yet another attack on the beleaguered Second Amendment :smithicide:

Hannah Gastonguay, 26, said Saturday that she and her husband "decided to take a leap of faith and see where God led us" when they took their two small children and her father-in-law and set sail from San Diego for the tiny island nation of Kiribati in May.

...

Hannah Gastonguay said her family was fed up with government control in the U.S. As Christians they don't believe in "abortion, homosexuality, in the state-controlled church," she said.

U.S. "churches aren't their own," Gastonguay said, suggesting that government regulation interfered with religious independence.

Among other differences, she said they had a problem with being "forced to pay these taxes that pay for abortions we don't agree with."

The Gastonguays weren't members of any church, and Hannah Gastonguay said their faith came from reading the Bible and through prayer.

"The Bible is pretty clear," she said.

To be fair, the Bible is pretty clear. When it says "Love thy neighbour as thyself" and "Judge not, lest ye be judged" it's pretty clearly saying that you should hate all the gays, and prevent women from getting potentially lifesaving medical care.

And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone's opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar's.” Jesus said to them, "No, you don't have to pay taxes, it's just going to pay for abortions."

A friend of mine on Facebook linked to this article and said something to the effect of "even if it's fraud, that's not for a neighborhood to decide on their own". A relative of hers (I'm not sure who, and don't really care) came back with a tirade about how so much disability isn't going to people who are "surely disabled" (her words), and how things like Bipolar Disorder, Depression, and "I ate too many Big Macs and now I'm too fat to walk" (as if all fat people getting SSDI don't have problems that were exacerbated by, or led to, their obesity) aren't disabilities. Then she stated that while the guy might have been "misguided" you have to appreciate that he had the balls to post that. Also that people who really need assistance are having to wait too long for it because of the "lazy scum mooching off the gov't" (guess she doesn't know that the I in SSDI is "Insurance" - as in, most recipients are receiving benefits they paid for).

:wtc: It's literally a modern-day witch hunt and this woman is perfectly OK with it because she's decided that only being an amputee, blind, deaf, or mentally retarded (her words, not mine) are actual disabilities. I love my friends, but damned if I don't hate almost every single one of their families.

I now have confirmation that the idiotic relative doesn't know how SSDI works. She responded to my point that it's insurance with "If they have insurance, they're not collecting a government check and fall into the 'deserved' category". What the everliving gently caress. And of course, someone had to butt in with the "LOL you're arguing over a Facebook post, go out and do something". Nice of them to miss the fact that I mentioned that I have a crippling injury. :bravo:

The buttinski also tried the "no, (relative) and the note are just talking about fraud, and even less than 1% is too much for the people who work hard and can't pay their bills". And somehow, between the two of them, they think that it's liberals who have hosed this country up, and not the party/people who routinely argue against things like a mandatory living wage, better healthcare coverage*, etc.

* - I would likely not be disabled if I had better insurance from the job I had when I got injured. The only medical facility I could reasonably go to that was within twenty miles of my home was a clinic that walked me out the door with a script for painkillers and a referral to a chiropractor (for a non-skeletal injury!). I couldn't even afford the time off to go get a second opinion. But no, I'm just a lazy rear end who doesn't want to work, wasn't raised right, and is just looking for a handout from the government. Never mind that my back injury is one of a boatload of disorders I have, most of which are heritable autoimmune disorders from my parents.

There are two disability programs.
There is ssid which is earned by your ss contributions and then there is just ssi which anyone who is disabled qualifies for. SSI payments are shockingly small, I want to say under $1000/mo, which is virtually unlivable outside a group setting. These are also almost always the neediest because they were generally seriously disabled as children.
All of them are also very, very difficult to qualify for and unless you're totally blind or missing limbs, you're looking at multiple applications and 12months or longer with no income.

According to the SSA when I applied, I could qualify for SSDI but not SSI, because I have family who pay for my food and housing without hardship.

And believe me, I know how hard it is to qualify. I'm in year five, and having to refile from step 1 because I was given faulty instructions by my local SSA office (including several lies, which apparently aren't actionable offenses!). But yeah, that $1100 a month I haven't gotten yet is living in the lap of luxury, I tell you what.
