Same with my father (minus the back in the day activism) but I don't even try anymore. He's not interested in being correct, he's interested in being right - if that makes any sense. I just write it off as early onset dementia and shut him down whenever he tries to steer the conversation that way.

Once you have sent the Clavius and Bad Astronomy sites, include this different take - a cameraman who's been working since 1978, and the other was a video engineer who worked in Television in the 1960's and 1970's. They put forward the counterargument that it was not possible to fake the Apollo 11 143 minute single-stream from the surface of the moon using technology that existed at that time, and the later video footage was even more impossible. Not the best video to open the argument with, as it's a bit unfocused, but still a nice finishing move.

You know how there's that meme where someone will combine, like, a picture of Yoda, a quote from Dumbledore, and a caption saying it the quote was from Gandalf? This is like that, but mashing together two or three conservative conspiracy theories into infuriating gibberish.

Also, apparently Reince Priebus bought back the "death panels" bullshit, so we can probably expect to see plenty more of that in the near future.

What's funny about that image is it's such a clear case of projection. I've met very few people who hate republican voters. Republican politicians, sure. But the people who vote for them are mostly perceived as ignorant, short-sighted dupes. Right wingers seem much quicker to want to blame the other sides base for things.

Please explain this. I just need to know how we went from too incapable to travel to the moon to preforming a joint manned mission with our mortal enemies to a planet that's at least 150 times farther away in less than five years.

I just recently taught a day on health care systems in my medical ethics class, and because PPACA is such a mess to find information on, I spent over an hour explaining what it was and how it worked, after reading up extensively (good god, finding reliable information is really brutal, but the Obamacare thread really helped me tract it, and it turns out it's pretty accurate!). At the end, a student asked "where'd Sarah Palin get death panels?"

I explained and she had this justifiably dumbfounded expression on her face. Because it's so dumb that it's clearly thought up by a moron or someone who is actively malicious.

I remember hearing about that. It was probably some actuary who's entire job was finding ways to provide less care for more money. Obamacare made many of those tactics illegal and therefore her job illegal.

And they can't come up with anything good to say without making their previous long-winded posts seem like middle school crap.

There was a portion of the law that expanded Medicare to provide end-of-life counseling. This included making plans for nursing homes, hospice, palliative care, discussing advance directives, living wills, medical proxies, and in some cases durable powers of attorney. Since no state authorizes assisted suicide for non-terminal patients, who in any event already have to deal with these issues, I don't believe it would include assisted suicide counseling in Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Vermont (just passed in May).

Naturally this is condemning seniors to death via panels.

My mom was angried up a few weeks ago because my aunt (the wife of my father's brother) had told the news that her 93 year old dementia addled mother who could no longer walk, feed herself, or even sit up was in the hospital and the doctor had the gall to suggest she be taken off her feeding tube and enter hospice care (she "recovered" and is back to sitting in a wheelchair in a senior's home unresponsive to the world). Protip: have the conversation about end of life care with your parents before they are in the hospital and need care, and need someone to make decisions for them. Hell, convince them to make a living will to take it out of your hands. Get one done before you're old, seriously.

Nothing sucks more than having to make life and death decisions for someone else. I've been trying to convince my father for a while, because while I'd probably make the same decisions, I'd rather not rip the family apart doing it, since I'm pretty sure he and I are the only ones who would make those decisions!
