The English don't have the different coverage levels with liability you see in the US. The default is 20M.

Well that explains why insurance is so expensive in England. When Top Gear did the episode where they pretended to be teenagers buying their first car and they kept getting insurance quotes for 2-3X as much as the car cost I was pretty confused.

That doesn't make sense. You could easily write off a car (or cars) worth 15 times more than the cost of your car.

I bet it's for the new bridge in Mt. Vernon.

They have a similar vehicle with rear driver for moving the Boeing 777 wings from Auburn Fabrication to the Boeing Everett factory.

That's more the teenager factor. Get older, with some no-claims behind you, and the prices drop significantly.

I live a few miles from a factory that produces bridge sections like that; the intersection that connects the road from the factory to a highway frequently sees convoys of these things.

Well, it sort of does because otherwise everyone's insurance would be the same because anyone could hit a Veyron when they were out and about. But teenagers are more likely to do so.

This is honestly one of the coolest vehicles I've ever seen. I'd love to see something like this with a mid-mounted engine so it can move around under it's own power.

You may laugh, but the cheapest insurance quote on my first car, a puny 1.2 Renault Clio, was about 2400.

I bought the car for 160.

That's exactly 15 times the value of the car. :argh:

Adding my 16 year old son (damned I'm getting old) to my plan with full coverage for a 2001 V70 T5 and liability only for a 1997 850 GLT doubled our 6 month rate from $340 to about $690. Even in California Volvos are incredibly cheap to insure. Sorry to hear about England.

I will admit that I have absolutely no idea how the economics of insurance works. I don't even think people who work for underwriters understand how it works. I'm pretty sure in the basement of Lloyds is a crashed UFO and the only bit of advanced quantum biocomputer substrate still functioning is the infinite improbability drive, which they somehow managed to get to generate cost/risk/expense/profit equations after hitting it with a stick a few times.

The cheap insurance on Volvos thing is very true, I was surprised how cheap the insurance on my S60R is. Yeah, I have a good driving record and I'm over 30, but with comprehensive and collision it was only a couple hundred a year more than my old '96 Subaru Legacy without either.

They don't. No one does. According to the stories from my sister, insurance is basically a bunch of VPs throwing darts at a wall, and asking the peons to generate reports that somewhat justify whatever the dart says to do.
