I bought bit.trip.saga for $30 when it first came out and had some fun with it but eventually sold it but for $5 it's pretty much a no brainer, especially when you don't have to swap out a cart to play it. BUY IT.

BTW that reminds me, if I do end up buying a new SD card for my 3DS would transferring the data to the new card just be a case of copying everything from the one card to another (e.g. on my PC?) Or is there a weird process I have to go through?

[edit] \/\/ Awesome. I still have the basic 2GB card in there, and with Animal Crossing taking up 6000 blocks it's getting hard to justify buying anything off the eShop.

My only complaint about Bit Trip Saga is that it has pretty bad framerate issues if you play it with 3D. This is especially noticeable in Runner in certain segments (where it lags a bit even if you don't have 3d on), which is annoying since this is a timing/precision based game.

It's a lot of fun though! Flux is one of my favorite rhythm games of all time.

I have really bad eyes for framerate, so when I heard about that, I played with it on, thought it was fine, then turned the 3D off, and noticed a MASSIVE DIFFERENCE that looked so much better. So yeah. Framerate with 3D is REALLY quite bad.

I remember Steel Empire! If anyone doesn't - imagine a horizontal shoot-em-up like Gradius or whatever, only you can fire left or right, and enemies/bosses will attack from the left or right of the screen to take advantage of that. And it's not a really awkward transition between firing left and right either, like Tail Spin for the NES. It's a decent game.

Here's a Japanese article on the 3DS version (click) - it definitely looks more like a remake than a port.

Apparently the source code for the original Mega Drive game fell off the face of the Earth, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're basing this off the GBA port - or, as you say, rebuilding it from the ground up.

Man, I loved Steel Empire, I thought everyone else had forgotten about it. Still has one of the best boss design of any shooter I've played (at least aesthetically, they're probably boring if you're a hardcore shumup fan) always been a fan of bosses that keep pulling out new weapons whenever you blow the last one off.

Edit: Actually all my favourite horizontal scrollers were on the Megadrive, probably due to that being the last time I played any seriously. :v: They should totally put Gynoug and Hellfire up on the eShop for all five people who remember them to buy.

Gynoug is out on the Wii VC in Japan, I think. I guess the giant penis monsters kept it from coming overseas.

Hellfire and a bunch more Toaplan games (Zero Wing, Truxton, Grind Stormer, etc) are owned by Square-Enix by way of Taito, so I can't imagine they're very high on the list of potential VC candidates. They've re-released a bunch of 'em as plug-and-play machines, weirdly enough.

To be fair, it is REALLY easy to break code when you're trying to fix bugs, especially if you don't know what caused it in the first place (which I believe was the situation in the 3DS version). It's the same reason that instead of removing unused assets before the game goes gold, they typically just dummy them out, because you never know if there's something that calls them or requires them buried deep in the code, and removing them might cause everything to fall apart. The rest of the game more or less works as intended, so it's safer to just stop you from saving there than try to recode literally everything related to the PEC room so the bug no longer exists.

Not necessarily true. I'm not sure how much (or if) it affects load times, but writing to the SD card is way faster than writing to the cart. I didn't even realize that Etrian Odyssey 4 had its own little save jingle until I saw someone playing the cart, because I never heard more than the first note.

That's pretty small potatoes, admittedly, but it's definitely a difference.
