This is what started it all. A very challenging piece to produce. Patrick had been working on this for many years when he was introduced to Brent as a possible glassblower to fulfill the difficult task of making it. It is a difficult shape to produce by hand and then Patrick wanted the glassblowers to add a conical foot to it while still hot on the blowpipe. Encolmo glassblowing takes a lot of skill. With much trial and error the project slowly evolved as well as Brent and Patrick's relationship as partners...the business kind.

Well, they are talking about their evolving relationship with someone they hired because they're really good at blowing. It would be far too much trouble to pick a different choice of wording, e.g. "Brent and Patrick's business partnership". Or, you know, notice that they'd exclusively referred to "glassblowing".

This strikes me as a last gasp thing. There hasn't been much to generate money from in a long time and now that it looks like there will be some sort of endpoint and new content a lot of old fans started paying attention. If nothing comes out, Fred has 300 grand that he'll probably blow through fairly easily even just from having a kid and medical bills and then have nothing afterwards and no real job experience from the last several years. Even in a best case scenario from a production standpoint, they still probably won't generate much in sales after the kickstarter since most everyone who thought there would be an actual game already pledged. I've gotten a dollar's worth of entertainment from lack of updates so I guess I can't complain.

I'm a cartoonist, and I have always been irrationally infuriated by Fred's artwork. He's a very mediocre cartoonist and a poster boy for artists who think that throwing cheap anime signifiers (shiny eyes, triangle nose, etc) into your artwork is all you need to make compelling work. The reason those breasts are so weird is because he's drawn the chest in a different perspective from the rest of the body (not to mention also being anatomically incorrect,) it happens when you don't use an underlying structure when placing characters in an environment or composition. It's also clear he doesn't use linear perspective at all, which some artists can get away with, but Fred cannot. He makes the types of mistake developing artists make, and I think is excusable for someone starting out, but the fact that he has drawn 500+ pages in a professional capacity and has improved so marginally, floors me. The sad thing is that he's proved that he doesn't need to improve to have a dedicated following who worship your every lovely un-inked panel. And don't even get me started on his backgrounds, good christ they are so naive and ugly.

Regarding the spinning glassblowers, the spinning wine glasses seem like a disaster waiting to happen, but I think the spinning decanter is kind of cool. It fulfills the purpose of what a decanter is supposed to accomplish by aerating the wine, so it might make a good gift for the wine-connosiour who already has everything.

It's the poster child for excessive adoption of anime as a valid "art style" / nerd bait back in 2002. I recall he tried to get Megatokyo published in Japan and was upset when it was a dismal failure.

The guy has such a reputation for being incapable of releasing anything on time or putting project on the sidelines - usually with a massive pity plea that the duo at Penny Arcade were pretty stunned to realise how much he just hated himself when they met in person.
I really can't see this being much more of a money grab to deal with his recent health issues.

Yeah, I could see the decanter being a neat thing to break out for parties, but I just know I'd get really annoyed at trying to use the glasses.

A reason for this is that he is one of the many, many nerds who think Japanese comics look like Japanese animation. Pretty much the entire style of anime is about simplifying animation and reducing its cost. Their comics, on the other hand, can be super detailed. A comic with crappy animation visuals isn't going to cut it.

Megatokyo. I can't think of anything witty here so basically gently caress that guy. Fred has basically 4 possible outcomes for everything he does:

1: Do a comic page as scheduled. (unlikely)
2: Do a comic page several days late, or just do nothing.
3: 'Dead Piro Day' wherein he posts a lovely half-finished sketch of something vaguely related to the comic and some pity-plea that he is working SO HARD
4: 'Shirt Guy Dom Day' wherein even less effort is put forth and he has a buddy do a rock-stupid stick figure comic that is OMG SO WACKY

I used to read it way way back in the day, when he still had Rodney around to tell him to stop doing so much dating sim self insert fantasy poo poo. It was actually pretty tolerable then, and the mediocre art was pretty much head and shoulders above webcomics at the time. He was fairly decent about sticking to something resembling a schedule back then. I stopped reading about the time he basically forced Rodney out and made a bunch of whining blog posts about how he was the victim and everyone should pity him etc etc.
I'm still annoyed that he never made good on his bitchfits about shutting down the comic for good if he ever found porn of it.

This is some pretty classic Awful Kickstarter right here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1997247042/gridiron-thunder-awesome-indie-football-game-for-o?ref=search

Gridiron Thunder is going to be like no other football video game you've ever played. Why? Because the devs understand fun. What's fun about Gridiron Thunder is that the players onscreen will do AMAZING touchdown celebrations. And that seems to be about it.

This is truly my favourite awful Kickstarter in weeks. It has it all.
  • Hilari-bad gameplay video of a game supposedly shipping in two weeks.
  • Unsubstantiated claims of having the notoriously difficult-to-acquire NFL license (including an image of Bill Belicheck, who opts out of every video game)
  • suspiciously high average donation (80 grand from just over 100 backers)
  • OUYA
  • Absolutely no indication of where the money is going
and much, much more. Do not miss the video.

The first is Gunnm/Battle Angel Alita, the second is Gyo, I don't know where the third one is from, and the last one is the Ghost In The Shell: ARISE anime tie-in. There's probably even more. Katsuhiro Otomo of Akira fame is pretty famous for having really highly-detailed panel work and probably the more accessible to Western audience. He also has a new film out, Short Peace, and recently did this portrait of a famous director in his most famous work...
