Boaz MacPhereson posted:Well I figured out where the speedo needle went... It snapped off and was laying in the bottom of the gauge cluster. I've got it all apart, and the actual shaft that the needle attaches to is broken. I've got a little stump of shaft still stuck to the needle and the rest running down into the actual speedometer mechanism. All I need is the mechanism itself or at the very least a new shaft and needle. I'm having no luck at all tracking down anything less than an entire new speedo for $200+. Anyone got any ideas? I went to an outdoor screening of Back to the Future last night and was surprised to see a big turnout of a local DMC club. It was really cool seeing this many DeLoreans in one place. And they had one all done up in the BTTF garb for photos which looked pretty darn authentic.

I know this isn't a car, but I want to use this as a segue: This is the BV-141. I remember some photos posted earlier in this thread in regards to a race car builder/driver who had a few designs 'inspired' by having encountered one of these during a sortie in WWII. What was the guys name, and can you post some pictures? Edit: someone posted in the other thread, Good Ol' Smokey Yunick. CovfefeCatCafe fucked around with this message at 14:30 on Aug 26, 2013 |

veedubfreak posted:What was the thought process that went behind this plane? IIRC it was a recon plane with a downwards facing camera that needed a wide angle to take pictures. I think the cockpit was separated so that the camera's wouldn't be affected as much by engine vibrations, but I could be talking out my rear end. Germans also had a bunch of weird designs that would go to great lengths to avoid the dual prop setup as seen on the Lightning because someone had a hardon for low drag coefficients. The name eludes me now, but by the end of the war they had some crazy fast push/pull prop setup plane. edit: (not my pic, still awesome) autism ZX spectrum fucked around with this message at 23:14 on Aug 26, 2013 |

The name eludes me now, but by the end of the war they had some crazy fast push/pull prop setup plane. Blohm & Voss, who were actually a shipbuilder, and their primary designer was Richard Vogt, who is a pretty big name in aeronautics. You are correct that part of the reason the fuselage is that way is for recon visibility, but also because the requisition required the airplane be single engine. However, the BMW engine (see, this is AI related) sourced for the BV-141 was in short number, so the winner of the competition was actually the twin-engine Focke-Wulf Fw 189 which had the fuselage set up to maximize visibility for the cameras as well. A nice side effect, of course, is the reduced drag, which is what caught Smokey Yunick's attention. edit: to stop posting planes in the car thread and cars in the planes thread, have a BMW 318i. I suddenly want one after reading the latest Road & Track... CovfefeCatCafe fucked around with this message at 02:18 on Aug 27, 2013 |

Thanks for the facts! I always wondered why they didn't make more of those planes. Now, back to cars: does Smokey's design actually decrease drag? From what I understood with the plane is that a single engine setup like the BV 141 would reduce drag by having a single prop. The propellers 'spoil' the airflow (I forget the actual term) and induce a lot of drag. Since the car doesn't deal with that, wouldn't what essentially amounts to a sidecar increase drag? The propellers 'spoil' the airflow (I forget the actual term) and induce a lot of drag. Since the car doesn't deal with that, wouldn't what essentially amounts to a sidecar increase drag? The idea is that two bodies of diameter 'x' produce less drag than a single body of diameter '2x'. So instead of having one very large main body, you have two smaller ones, less frontal area, and less "wet" skin area as well. To put into perspective, a 2 inch hole leaks more water than two 1 inch holes. Whether or not this was intentional when Vogt designed the BV-141 is unclear from what little I've dug up. While not knowing too much about it's performance, Yunick's car seems to also play into his placement of the driver directly behind the front wheel, which will have a wake effect, further reducing the drag "felt" on the car by the driver's position (the idea originating from the same principles that led to the creation of the Tyrrell P34). So basically, it's not "adding a sidecar" but rather moving the driver/pilot from "on top" to "alongside" the powerplant. Also, some side cars are very aerodynamic:
