Sorry for the slight derail, but this is interesting to me - there's a very common construction in Pennsylvania and the surrounding area where people omit saying "to be", usually after the verb needs (as in "this needs washed"), but I didn't know there were any examples of similar omission in British English usage. Is "wanting rid of" common?

poo poo that pisses me off: SQL Server Compact Edition. Despite being touted as a portable Sql Server useful for unit testing and the like, the SQL syntax and functionality it supports is utterly different to that supported in SQL Server. Even bog-standard CREATE TABLE and INSERT TABLE statements have different syntax and capabilities between the two. Which means it's just not practical to re-use SQL between the two. Also it supports programatic transactions, but not BEGIN TRAN / COMMIT in statements. Weird.

Well, it had to happen sooner or later.

The remote control agent we use pops up a message to the user if you want to initiate a remote control session for the purposes of actually driving their desktop -- but if you want to just collect some information, there's a discreet mode that lets you get in and do little command line shenanigans and get things like process listings and hardware audit information without actually disrupting anybody's workflow. It also displays a little postage stamp 320x240 screen stream so you have a context for what the user's doing that might be causing the processor to thrash so hard, etc., etc.

After 4 years in HellDesk, I've finally managed to connect to someone's computer, just to see them viewing porn (XTube). Just when I thought I had no more firsts left.

That wasn't even why I was there! All I wanted was to find out his BIOS version. :eng99:

Edit: This is seriously odd. I was wondering if all 133 reddit apps was somehow not available in the Danish store, so I picked on at random "Reddit To Go!" and googled for it. That led me to the apps.microsoft.com-page for the app, I clicked the "View in Windows Store" button, and the Store opened right up with the app available. I downloaded it and everything seems to work. Same thing with facebook. What the hell is going on?

Edit2: I found the solution to the, eh.. feature(?) of not showing me any apps at all. Per default the store is set to only show apps that supports the same language as set in the profile. I'd never say anything like "this needs washed", I'd be more likely to say "This wants washing", but it's kind of hard for me to say whether that phrase I used is common.

When I post on forums, IRC etc. My writing style sometimes tends towards a stream of consciousness and comes out how I'd say something rather than how I'd write it. Combine with the fact that I have a bit of a weird accent that mixes a fair chunk of Scouse with a bit of Cheshire and starting to pick up a bit of a south Wales too. I wouldn't really like to say if it's common or not.

Bonus points that when I'm tired I start to struggle with storing and parsing long sentences, so my style of speech tends towards efficient use of syllables over grammatically and politically correct English. This occasionally pisses off my partner, but also produces some comical yet very vivid descriptions from time to time.

That's kind of a weird thought isn't it?
I work at a medium sized IT firm at a branch site, working on what might be one of the biggest technical contracts in my state ever. We in short, repair systems for said contract(wanna say around 80k systems?), and we're also responsible for deploying wireless solutions for a few hundred sites. It's a fun job, my boss is awesome, and I work with my best friend.

Only issue though? My boss isn't normally the manager of the place, only temporary for the summer and the next few months. The normal manager is a complete poo poo head who doesn't belong there, who doesn't wanna be there, but doesn't wanna quit because he wants to be fired so he can go on unemployement. He's also extremely lazy. For this and any possible future stories I'll refer to him as Jim. Before I was hired by my current boss, Jim was so afraid(also lazy) of the idea of actually interviewing applicants for some positions he was gonna open he went to the local "Technical College"(you pay $12k for the privilege of sitting in a class room to use only $1.5k in Labsim/Testout modules, no degree) and picked up two students there, completely ignoring my friend's recommendation for me. These two students were REALLY bad at their job, one of them extremely creepy to boot. Jim currently manages the Wireless side of things, and when he came to my boss asking if he could spare anyone because they were falling behind, my boss instantly suggested the two students and Jim's response? "Haha gently caress that." No gently caress you for hiring those two idiots and going off to something unrelated, we didn't have deadlines or anything. :argh: Thankfully they got fired not long after me and another guy got hired.

Now, the reason Jim has been falling behind? Originally it was just him and shithead #1, whom I will refer to as "Fred" in the front room where they did their thing. They got a third person(shithead #2, who will be referred to as "Joe". Why do I refer to these two as shitheads? They're a completely different can of worms.) after my boss yelled at Fred for something involving Joe, causing Jim to pull Joe over to Wireless to protect him. But the reason they fell behind? For days Joe would be doing basically all the work, while Jim and Fred would be watching Family Guy, American Dad, or movies. It basically became a joke with us doing repairs to say Wireless must be the hardest thing.

Fast forward to today. The repairs are all done for now(we beat our deadline )and everyone is basically on Wireless at this point, as well as Jim hiring a hand full of other people, though me and the other 2 who I sat with during the summer(my friend and another co-worker) have been avoiding it for the most part by helping around the depot and cleaning up. After we spent the entire day cleaning out a good chunk of the warehouse, throwing away a lot of junk, moving dozens of heavy boxes, we're sitting around the shipping desk relaxing and Jim walks by to go outside for a cigarette. Jim gives us a look and asks, "You guys just gonna sit around orrr?" which my friend responds along the lines of, "So how's Wireless Jim? Sounds much harder than what we're doing." Jim gets kinda annoyed and ask "Do you really think I just sit around and watch Family Guy all day?" Friend is just being a general smartass saying he implied no such thing which Jim eventually gives up and returns out front. After a few minutes I go out front to see if my ride arrived. On my way back I look into the office he apparently spends all day doing important configurations...he's playing a flash game on what I assume to be Newgrounds.

Okay Jim you win, not JUST Family Guy.... :negative:

My problem with this is that disabling UAC doesn't do anything. It effectively just automatically clicks "no" on each UAC prompt. You don't get any more permissions, stuff just fails silently.

This also makes it a bitch to do desktop support for too because you don't get a prompt for administrator credentials when you need to mess with some settings.

Alright so, I work at the same medium sized IT firm branch as Zeratanis here. Got him the job there to boot. Thought I'd give some insight on shitheads 1 and 2, whom he's already dubbed Joe and Fred. Both of them are tremendous wastes of space and resources, each for their own reasons. I could probably go on for days about either of them.

First up is Joe. Joe is one of those guys who used to be morbidly obese and through hard work and dieting turned his life around. Good for you Joe, you did it. Maybe that whole experience will make you a better person. Sure enough, it just turned him into a pretentious rear end in a top hat who talks poo poo about anyone who doesn't eat healthy foods, or exercise regularly. And sure, maybe he's right. But honestly, nobody cares. We're here to work, get paid, and if some people weren't there to suck it all out of the building, actually have some fun. Alright, that didn't have anything to do with why we all hate Joe so much. But, hopefully you see a little bit of what his personality is. The other half, is just complete laziness. So we've got to fix systems. A lot of systems, dozens of them in and out each day, with summer being especially crazy. The quota isn't high, and just about any chump off the street(Zeratanis) could pick the work up and get it done. Well for most of us it's the norm to exceed our expected number. Hell it's downright easy to do at least 30% more than what is expected. Most days for me double is nothing. For Joe, meeting quota is an uphill battle. Not because he's completely inept, not because he's unlucky and gets longer repairs. He just simply doesn't work. He comes in to work a half hour to an hour late, every day. First thing he does after he clocks in, is buckle down and start repairing systems to make up for the time he was out. In this case however, "repairing" is eating, and "systems" is actually a bowl of cereal at his desk. Alright, twenty minutes down, belly full of cereal time to start working. Well sure, first he's gotta read some news, and THEN it's time to work. There is a catch however, in order for him to work he's got to be on Youtube or Netflix, streaming whatever horrible tv show tickles his fancy that particular day. Our internet downright blew at the time. We couldn't handle streaming as well as work. Luckily though, we all need the internet to do our job. Alright at least he's working now, sort of. 6 hours later, and barely halfway to his quota, it's time to pack up and go home. That's it? Really? Late, barely works, screws everyone else over on the internet, and also ditches out before he's even worked his eight hours. Not only does he not get his full 8 hour day in, but he cries about not making enough money. He also doesn't think he gets paid enough, but instead of working his rear end off to earn a raise. He claims he'll meet quota when hes paid what he thinks he deserves to hit said quota. Unbelievable, no boss in their right mind would hire this guy, and if they did he certainly wouldn't be working for very long. Nice one, Jim.

Alright now for, Fred. Fred wanted to be a teacher. Went to school, got his degree. Good for you Fred. Well, he didn't do poo poo with it. Kind of like Joe and his engineering degree. So here's Fred, doesn't know dick about anything computer related. Gets a job here doing some basic hardware repairs on a work bench. Fred's a lot like Joe in the work department. Though he arguably got a lot more done, he still wastes time doing things like watching movies while(instead of) working. Hilariously enough, when Jim was questioned by my current stand in boss, about Freds poor output. His response was, and I quote, "Oh, well Fred watches movies all day so." Sorry, what? You, know he watches movies, you know it affects his work output, and you think it's a valid excuse. Got it, makes sense. Anyway, fast forward a bit. Last year, somebody got fired for not doing his job. SOMEHOW it wasn't Joe or Fred, but some other useless rear end in a top hat who didn't do anything, strange there seems to be a trend here. Honestly he was only fired because he cost the company a sizable chunk of change. Upwards near $50,000 in computer parts. So here we go, we for some reason need a replacement for that rear end in a top hat. So there are two people on Jim's mind for the job. Fred, and a man whos been there years longer than anyone else, who I'll call Mike. Now Mike's a good guy. He's quiet and a hard worker, and been with the company almost a decade. Jim asks Mike, and he says he wants a day to think about it. A day passes and he decides to take Jim up on the offer and says he'll take it. Alright, well Jim already decided on Fred. I guess he asked Mike as a formality, because he started training Fred on the job. When Mike confronted him on that, Jim told him, "Oh well he pretty much already knows the job and summer is coming up. It will just be a temporary thing for the summer I need you on the bench." Yeah well at least that sort of makes sense. Take Fred the slacker off the repair bench, and keep Mike doing what he's good at. But Mike concedes to that, believing that it will just be until the end of summer. Well summer goes by, quite successfully. Deadlines are met with time to spare and things have started winding down. Freds job at this point would take someone, like my current boss, around 2 hours to do, if that. So this is where we all start hating Fred. He's got his own office, and he stretches a 2 hour job out over 8 hours. And he's suddenly mister important. Suddenly thinks he's better than all of us. He starts getting his hands deeper into poo poo than we'd all like it to be. Starts studying on the clock for certifications. Recently got his Net+, which certainly impressed all of us(it didn't). He's also studying Cisco, and pops a boner whenever someone says Cisco within earshot, before rushing to the conversation to try and show off his limited knowledge. My favorite quotes of some of these conversations are, "I have some concerns about SSIDs (this was said to one of the biggest execs in the company, the guy pretty much handling our entire branch)," and, "So just call me if you have any problems, you know, technicalwise." If anyone actually asks him for some sort of assistance with any Cisco equipment we get a, "Oh I've never even touched one of those things before," or, "I don't know what that is." It's downright infuriating to see him on his rear end all day in that big office, with his hands behind his head staring out the window, getting paid far more than any of us, to do next to nothing. The worst part is he somehow stole the job right out of Mike's hands without even trying. At least Mike would be right back on the bench for the remaining 6 hours, and hell he'd be hitting his numbers to boot.

Honestly this all comes down to Jim. The root of all our problems. Whos laziness and stupidity has us dealing with piles of poo poo like Joe and Fred, and picking up the slack, while he takes all the credit. Yeah I get it, that's just how it goes down most the time, and it's not the first time I've seen something similar. But it's the way everyone sees what's happening, and the way Jim actually acknowledges that it's happening and doesn't do anything about it. It's different if your boss is completely blind to the issues, and you know they're loving gone as soon as you can get it to his attention. But this is just hosed. We are out here all alone, with just Jim running the show. No one from corporate will ever just show up to see this crap going down. Hell their only connection to us is Jim and what Jim tells them. God I can only hope things pan out in our favor and Jim is left on his rear end when this is all over.

Forgive me if my post is a tad convoluted. It's been a long day, and I gotta go deal with this poo poo again in the morning. Can't wait to work with Fred later this week installing some wireless gear. It's going to be so much fun.

UAT is running a build that will never be released of a platform that is about to shut down permanently. This is what they are integrating with.
