Anyone else remember Street Sharks?

It was created in a secret government lab to have the most badass concept to kids.

I always hated how the main character's name, Ripster, really didn't roll off the tongue well.

Triumph of the Nerds, if you don't mind that it also covers the 70s/80s and doesn't really focus on gaming. It's quite enjoyable.

edit:

For a more purebred 90s documentary, try Nerds 2.0.1: Networking the Nerds by the same guy. It's about the rise of the internet and was made in 1998 - so it's pretty loving 90s.

Thank you for these, they're pretty entertaining. I'm watching the internet one and it's funny how right they were about the internet booming and evolving, and the bizarre concepts of the day like "internet years." :psyduck: It's also neat seeing internet giants of today back when they were start-ups in debt.

Yeah, there was Street Sharks, Biker Mice From Mars and TMNT. That was the trifecta. I mean, I suppose there were others but those three were the main ones.

I didn't actaully see Street Sharks on TV very much but I got a picture book that adapted an episode at a school car boot sale many years ago (adapting the one where the Sharks' friend is transformed into an anthropomorphic killer whale by their enemy and assumes the name "Moby Lick" because he has a freakishly large tongue).

Swap out Biker Mice From Mars for SWAT Kats, and it nails which ones were big where I lived. I don't remember anyone even mentioning Biker Mice on the playground.
There was also Road Rovers, but the less said about that one, the better.

Solar Winds haunts me and I can't really explain why. My brother and I convinced our parents to buy it for us out the shareware rack at a Faye's drug store. What I remember about it can be broken down into the following list:

1) The combat seemed awesome. (I'm pretty sure it wasn't.)
2) There was an elusive sequel we obsessed about for years but never played. (I still wonder how it was.)
3) Part of the game involved flying in one direction for about twenty minutes.
4) When you got there, the ships you had to fight were way too hard. (They were the main enemy ships. I think you meet one near the beginning. They're dudes with horns.)
5) It took forever to figure out the point allocation system that let you "customize" your lovely ship.

We were convinced we were missing large parts of the game because of what I can only imagine was a glitch wherein, on route to #3/#4, you'd sometimes see stars/ships that disappeared when you stopped.

God, I hope somebody else remembers this and can fill me in.

I played the crap out of the shareware, to the point where I could complete it without getting hit a single time. I was obsessed with it at the time as it seemed like a cool story-driven game with a massive universe to explore, due to the multiple dialogue branches and that 20 minute expedition you take at that one point. I discovered a pair of planets enroute one day and they gave me extra energy and a weapon or something, which reinforced my need to explore more. A year or two ago I managed to track down both the full version of it and its sequel, which plays exactly the same, but I lost both the skill and patience to get more than 10 minutes into either. Also the combat is really dull, I have no idea how I was actually good at it.

Here it was Biker Mice from Mars, SWAT Kats and TMNT, and it's still pretty much is when we talk about good cartoons from the 90s. Almost noone has ever heard about Street Sharks.

Because I am somehow compelled to throw money at everything vaguely Neil Gaiman-related, I shelled out for a stack of "The Dreaming" comics from a thrift shop yesterday. The comic doesn't seem to be anything special, but the ads are all for long-forgotten video games, BMG music club, and terrible movies, and are kind of amazing. If anyone's interested, I can probably get them scanned in the next couple days.

I cannot stop laughing at this.

It also reminded me of a strange VHS I got in the mail in the mid/late 90s. I think I got it because I was subscribed to Nintendo Power or something. It was all about the new upcoming N64 game, "Banjo Kazooie," and it was narrated by Jon Lovitz. It had a profile of all the levels and I probably watched that stupid thing 100 times, even long after I had already bought the game. It also had a preview for a Conker game that was NOT Bad Fur Day, more of an all-ages adventure game. I wonder if I still have that...

In case you weren't aware, that other Conker game became Bad Fur Day after Rare realized what a boring and generic piece of poo poo it was as another family-friendly collect-a-thon. A lot of assets from the overworld and some stages will look familiar if you watch the footage again.
