Christ, Gregg Easterbrook is awful.quote:The strident insistence of the Jacksonville front office that this perennially dull losing team will have nothing to do with Tim Tebow, Florida's most popular football player, has gone from odd to downright weird. If Tebow becomes a success at New England -- as a "slash" or perhaps as an H-back or F-style tight end -- Jacksonville's refusal to sign him will look even worse. Plus the Jaguars spent a draft choice on Denard Robinson: If he ends up playing the "slash" role that might have gone to Tebow, Jacksonville management will have blundered anew. Tebow does have a traveling-circus problem. A strong, secure coach like Bill Belichick can handle that; a weak, insecure coach like Gus Bradley doesn't want to. Same with ownership -- Robert Kraft is strong and secure, while Shahid Khan does not inspire confidence.

I think the Jets proved how well picking up a player only because people like him turns out. Also, Denard could literally run circles around Tebow. I mean Tebow could smash him into pieces, but its basically comparing small and fast to big and strong.

Why would the Jaguars look bad if Denard works out? Wouldn't they only look bad if Denard does NOT fill the hole he thinks Tebow would have?

Denard Robinson will die on the field if they try to play him in any Tebow-style running. His brain is already basically mush.

Update on the absurd Jets media blackout: a couple of completely meaningless nuggets out of Jets camp like "Stephen Peterman working as the backup center" and "Sheldon Richardson working as a blocking specialist fullback" got tweeted by beat guys or retweeted from fans, which led the Jets to threaten everyone again, which in turn of course itself got reported on.

He's already assuming Tebow will work out in a "slash" role and that he'd be better than Robinson. The first is demonstrably untrue, as Tebow has always refused to play anything but QB, and the second is so incredibly unlikely that Gregg Easterbrook is a fucker

Robinson is also faster than Tebow, doesn't bring the off-the-field poo poo that Tebow does (which, even though his teammates may dig his leadership, is ultimately a distraction and takes away from the team as a whole), is younger (and therefore has more upside), and is on a cheaper contract than Tebow. And as Rap said, he's already willing to lineup in the backfield/as a wide receiver/as a kick returner in addition to taking snaps at QB which Tebow has shown reluctance to do. I can't imagine a world where I would rather have Tim Tebow on my NFL roster than Denard Robinson.

Yeah and neither the NHL nor his team doctors seemed to give much of a gently caress. But no way the NFL, a league with revenues far, far greater than the NHL, would purposefully mislead players about the dangers of their injuries. quote:¶ In a six-month stretch from October 2008 to April 2009, while playing 51 games, Boogaard received at least 25 prescriptions for the painkillers hydrocodone or oxycodone, a total of 622 pills, from 10 doctors — eight team doctors of the Wild, an oral surgeon in Minneapolis and a doctor for another N.H.L. team. haljordan fucked around with this message at 17:30 on Aug 30, 2013 |

The article uses horrible wording and does a bad job of making the point it wants to, but I agree with the theory. Football is already pretty regional and the talent disparity already skewers much more towards the lesser income areas of the country. I do have a question. Did wealthy people ever take up boxing or was it always a poor sport? I was just thinking about how I did not know a single kid who boxed. I was wondering if football was heading the same way.

Wealthy and middle class parents won't let their children play the game; he draws the parallels to the Army. It will quickly become a regional game due to that risk. My issues with this are A: The Army draws a large portion of it's recruits from the middle class. (1) B: the racial language used is just dumb (and wrong, see the first source. The military's issue is with not having enough wealthy people, not being too minority/poor/etc). C: The amount of power and money the NFL has. They can use that to promote the game and to play it safely. That is also ignoring the prestige playing football has. It's possible the risk of serious trauma will discourage some families, but his conclusion relies an awful lot on conjecture without much in the way of facts supporting it. 1. http://surface.syr.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1002&context=soc superaielman fucked around with this message at 01:02 on Aug 31, 2013 |

At the HS level, it'd take a pretty catastrophic collapse in support and a massive change in people's attitudes to make his theory come true. Drug or alcohol abuse removes 18 percent, and another 23 percent do not meet our standards for reasons such as criminal misbehavior, low aptitude scores, or having more dependents than can reliably be accommodated in the early career. Obviously I'm not saying that random minority kid hits all of those at once, but there's plenty that tick one of those boxes. Especially that first one. As I recall, something near 30% of African-Americans in the "can to join the military" age are obese and Hispanics aren't doing better. I remember the Navy bending over backwards trying to get me to go off on the OCS route. I had no idea that the viable pool was so tiny. I'm one of the biggest chickenhawks to ever live, and I don't buy into the Our Troops circlejerking (mainly because I know plenty of servicemen hate it), but his "oh the Army is for people with nothing to lose" was pretty insulting to...virtually everyone I've ever met that served. I'm not too worried about football. Kids will always want to run around and throw a ball and chase each other. They'll change the rules and eventually everything will work itself out. Then we'll look at old highlights and think "poo poo that's what we used to watch!?" Sort of like when I watch highlights from late 80s NHL, which was practically gladiatorial combat at times. There's stuff that you'll see and the commentators are like "clean hit" and now it would be a 30 game suspension.
