Actually got a chance to meet some of the old dub cast this weekend at a Dallas convention. Besides just how nice they were, it struck me just how...uh, ripe, I guess, the anime community is for a new sailor moon anime. There is a serious resurgence of Moon fans, it's totally awesome. EDIT: btw, Jupiter's voice actress is as cool and clearly superior as Jupiter herself.

A bit unrelated, but I've always wondered if people ever actually go up to dub actors at conventions and give them poo poo because they "ruined the show" or "didn't get a character's voice right". Sailor Moon's dub actors in particular, since a good chunk of the fandom acts like the people involved in the DiC/Cloverway dub came to their house and murdered their pets. Like, this particular twist would have been the wrong direction for me, but I'd still like the new series to do something different at least.

If you're looking for something Sailor Moon that's a little different and you can deal with some amazingly low-budget stuff plus some dodgy acting, the live-action PGSM series puts some soap-opera spin on the old story and has a lot more interpersonal conflict and *DRAMA* going on. I thought it was halfway charming myself, and entertaining enough. Also a softcore porn/erotica actress plays Beryl so there's that.

Going through the show according to the Essentials list, still in the first season . . . Man I am getting hooked on a show for little girls. I wanted to watch this show as a kid but I didn't have cable at the time. I know I watched at least a couple of episodes but I'm not sure how, did some non-cable network channels air it as well? Anyway, my inner 12 year-old self is thrilled. Also I totally have a vague memory from 8th grade (which was in 1998 so I guess it took that long for SM to make it here?) where another girl asked me to draw Sailor Moon for her but I did it during class and I got in (minor) trouble.

I know my local Fox station had it on like 5 in the morning on weekdays. Anyone else remember the "Save Our Sailors" effort to talk networks into airing more of the series? That was real early in my internet life.

I've been eagerly waiting for Amazon to update their shipment day for the S.H. Figuarts Sailor Moon. It's already out in Japan but Amazon seems to be confused as to when they'll actually get it. Amazon.jp already has it available for order though. Too bad they don't ship to the US.

Those figures are getting a separate American release which is slightly after the Japanese one. I don't think that even Japanese stores will sell to the US until the US date.

Yay I finished the first season! Well the Essentials version of it anyway. It's really cliche, the characters don't usually act logically at all and every problem is solved by a deus ex machina/character showing up really conveniently . . . But I can't stop watching and I had feelings several times during the last episode. Best monster so far was the hair dresser monster. A giant deadly shaving razor? A scissors cannon? Amazing. Do the other scouts ever get more characterization/development or is the show mainly just Usagi/Mamoru drama + yelling at monsters the whole way through? Most importantly, I can't decide if Mars or Jupiter is cooler, please help.

Occasionally, you get an episode dedicated to a character. In Ami's case, she gets an OVA all to herself. Can't really tell you what kind of character development they get, though, I just don't remember those particulars that much. The answer to your second question is Jupiter. My basis for this assessment is that Makoto can apparently brawl like a street thug but also she can cook. Rei apparently barely knows karate and can barely operate a microwave. I remember the latin american dub tried to pass off Zoisite as a girl... Except for one or two times when he says something about being a guy. I'm also watching the essentials right now, and I chose to not skip over the doom tree arc (it was pretty nice, all things considered) but mostly I just dread the inevitable arrival of Chibi Usa.

Zoisite was definitely a girl in the English dub. It worked pretty well, though, and it wasn't nearly as hilarious as "Amara and Michelle are just cousins who play with each other's hands while gazing longingly into each other's eyes, guys!"

Watching up to ep 26 for the first time myself (other than catching the occasional ep back during ~youth~) and I can't help but giggle every time Best save so far was when he popped up out of loving nowhere in a magical black hole dimension to be a Bus driver and chain-pulled 3 buses full of people out of there before giving his usual motivational speech and disappearing. *Honk* Runner up best moment so far: Jadite being run over by his own loving possessed airplane The show is all sorts of bizarre with its emotional range, from straight-up horror stuff -> wacky hijinks -> SUPER HERO SPEECH OF JUSTICE -> Oh poo poo- I WANNA GO HOME *Tzing, Rose* etc etc, all in the same episode. The music is really excellent, those little touches like that little string whenever Tuxedo pops up to smug it up. The blatant filler and lovely fights (I laugh each time the BUBBLES confounds even the most elite of enemies) are the only downside, the characters are fun and got a surprising amount of depth for what this is (the main character being the most unheroic of protagonists makes for like 90% of the jokes). e: I had a hard time determining if my favourite monster was the evil Tennis Racket or the Evil Gardener Hat, but I think I finally found the best one: Priest by day, Boxsy by... uh, afternoon Pimpmust fucked around with this message at 19:33 on Sep 14, 2013 |

Speaking of inexplicably changing character's genders, what was up with the decision to change Zirconia's? Zirconia was a woman right? I remember in the dub, they made her into a man, but I don't know the reason. There was never any dreaded homosexual relationships with her, and considering she was a part of Nehelania, the gender switch made even less sense.
