It was a rumour I'd heard from a friend who works in the area - I know there had been a lot of arrests (possibly a kettling and mass arrest) of the antifa demonstrators outside of the approved areas, it's possible he misinterpreted what he saw. My friend who was at the Altab Ali Park official counterdemo was massively amused by the sharp words (but no violence) breaking out between the Trots, the local Labour Party, and supporters of the "independent" Mayor of LBTH, Lutfur Rahman, after the latter did his normal thing of trying to make it all about him (in his defence he has been one of the driving forces behind the legal attempts to keep EDL out, but he's... not well-liked in the borough.

EDL thugs shut down an anti-racism gig by threatening the 16 year old girl who organised the show. They then tried to paint it as some sort of victory. This feels somewhat low even by EDL standards, especially the fact that they bragged about it. Painting themselves as the racist, violent thugs we know them to be. Tommeh goes into posh shop, gets mouthed by worker, complains to management who give him a meal of steak & chips worth as much as £25, suspends worker. (Guardian Link)quote:Robinson, a convicted criminal who leads anti-Islam protests that have often turned violent and have been marked by racist chanting, said the assistant asked his friend if he was with the EDL leader and then said "gently caress off, I am not serving you". Sadly the article doesn't go on to that "Tommy Robinson" is an assumed name, but it does mention that he's facing resistance elsewhere because owners of establishments know he's a complete prick.

He'll probably be quietly fired for bringing bother for the management. The bosses will be much more worried about thugs smashing up the shop then their employee's principles. Heck what if he has other principles?

In a way I hope the EDL go en masse to Selfridge's to rub in their right to be served and show the posh shoppers just how unpleasant they are.

The guy was lucky he'd been in the job so long. So far the only action suggestion they've put forward is a boycott. It's probably awfully classist, but this response caused a few giggles from the groups I follow. What's causing the most facepalms on the boards at the moment is the utter refusal to connect Tommeh's visit to Selfridge's (granted it was his friend doing the buying) and his subsequent visit to a casino (which he was also turfed out from, and may have even be barred from the premises already) almost immediately following his "charity" walk, the description of which changed from "unnamed charity" to "Tommeh's Legal Fund" while the walk was ongoing. I'll do a big post about it over the weekend.

I currently stay at a live-in rehab facility, and I think I'm finally starting to grasp how easy it is for racist and fascist ideals to get hold of people. Several of my co-patients are rehabilitated, compassionate and self-reflective, but they still have to bitch about immigrants. They say it's "a serious issue", but I think they just need someone on a lower rung to kick because they have been abused themselves.

Haha the "civic duty to serve everyone" line stinks of the axe murderer problem. That being in deontological morality you have a duty to always do the moral thing regardless of the consequences. So if an axe murderer asks you where their axe is you are duty bound to tell them because lying is wrong. Though I'm not sure serving Tommeh luxury goods at a department store can be spun as a categorical imperative but whatever. Now if you are not the axe murderer's intended victim or a white affluent liberal who has nothing directly to fear from the EDL doing the moral thing regardless of consequences is a great deal easier to do. Not lying is a negative duty: you shouldn't lie, but that doesn't mean you have answer every question asked. People are not entitled to an answer for any question they might ask, especially if you're being wronged by the asking: the murderer who threatens you, the sticky-nose who asks personal questions to humiliate you, etc. 'gently caress off I'm not telling you' is a perfectly honest answer.
