There are a few old Olympus PEN bodies that would be in that budget as well.

Would the 27mm and 35mm be an adequate for an outdoor outing like apple picking? Or, assuming I don't find the charger in time, should I just cave in and spend the $40 for a replacement charger (Or $20 for this third-party charger) so that I can have the flexibility of my Tamron 17-50mm as a backup?

I actually called them and they said that while they could be off by a day or two, they're pretty confident that they'll have a shipment by then. I hope so - I'm going to Cabo in mid-October and I'd love to have that lens for walkaround use.

I think the ones out now with a ring have a built-in aperture that sort of lets you stop down between the lens and body but I don't believe they work very well so be wary of those. It's far less hassle to just shoot with native XF lenses both in adaptability and weight/size. Would the 27mm and 35mm be an adequate for an outdoor outing like apple picking? I always buy a cheap travel charger and a couple spare battery from ebay whenever I buy a camera. The shipping time is usually 1 whole month from China/HK but its so cheap so it doesn't matter. You can shoot with just a 35mm lens if you want to. For wider shot just shoot a few more in manual mode and stitch up in Photoshop. XE1 also has pretty useful panorama mode. It can only do panorama with the camera in landscape position. If you want to make the 35/1.4 more useful, I recommend a neutral density filter so you can use the lens wide open in day time. For example, you can start out with this cheap one, Hoya make better ones in case you want to spend the money. If you have a NEX lens with 52mm or smaller filter thread, you can get a step up adapter and use it too. While people normally use a wider lens (or a zoom) for an Apple picking event (or whatever). If you go to a few more events like this you will find sometimes its good to bring odd equipments because it forces you shoot creatively. whatever7 fucked around with this message at 11:26 on Sep 17, 2013 |

Edward IV posted:(Why couldn't they have charged from USB to begin with Sony? ) This drives me up the wall .. The circuitry to make this happen couldn't have made the camera all THAT much bigger. I've built battery chargers before and if I can make them small surely Sony can fit it into a tiny thing The only solace I find is in the fact that the NEX basically gets great battery life with my usage patterns. I take maybe a few dozen shots a week and I only really need to charge when I think "oh maybe I should charge the camera".

Hmm that X-A1 is actually a really nice price point for Fuji to hit. When people ask me about my X-E1 they generally balk at the idea of spending over a grand on a non-DSLR (hard mindset to break, I guess), but I think I could have pointed a lot of people at the X-A1 at half the price, even if the sensor and kit lens are a little different/inferior.

I was thinking about maybe a Crumpler Haven or something but I'm interested in other peoples thoughts. I have a crumpler haven for my XPro1, 35mm and 18-55. It's pretty good, when I travel I'll throw it in my Complete Seed, if I'm walking about town it'll go in my Barney Rustle, on my (now stolen) motorbike it fit well in my Kriega (both R35 and US20) though if I'm taking my flash and other gear I'll need my 5 million dollar home. In case you haven't noticed I own way too much crumpler poo poo, as well as bags in general.

Glad to finally be a month away (maybe less if there are leaks) from being able to decide what sorta mirrorless system I want to go with. Sony's development of full-frame is tempting (I'm an OG 5D shooter, or used to be until I got too lazy to carry it everywhere), but they seem really dedicated to having a lovely lens selection. An X-E2 with articulating LCD might be enough to get me to bail on my NEX-3, although I'd be lying if the OM-D's features/lens selection weren't tempting.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I wanted to hear I think I'll grab a medium Haven. I love Crumpler too. I had a 6 Million Dollar Home until recently, but I sold it with my Canon gear. I also have a medium Skivvy messenger bag which I love. I've bought a couple of Timbuk2's now which are also great; I love being able to customise them and shipping to Australia is reasonable-ish.

My brother's looking into getting a camera. Is there a body with good video support?

Certain NEX bodies have great video support. A lot of M4/3 cameras are used by indie filmmakers and are known for being good and reliable in the video field. It depends on what he's looking for aside from "good video" because the short answer is "yes" I think the general consensus is to stay away from Fuji if you are looking for video. It's there, but it's nothing to write home about. I don't own one so I can't really comment on anything other than what I've read.

The Panasonic GH2 is very highly regarded as a video camera. I've shot a decent amount of video on my E-M5, the stabilization is great but you don't get a lot of control over the video otherwise, plus you need to by a dumb Olympus mic adapter that takes over the hotshoe.

If you are interested in the gh2, the panasonic g6 is more or less a gh2 in an updated camera body and it has focus peaking. Get whichever is cheaper.

There's a cine thread in the parent forum, Creative Convention, but from what I remember these are a great option if you want primarily video. http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicpocketcinemacamera It'll do photos but it's primarily targeted at video, and can do some of the fancy formats that things like a NEX can't. The NEXs are great if you want a good sensor in a mirrorless body for still photos, with video capability that's decent. If your brother has a big budget, there should even be a full frame model coming out soon, which is going to be loving awesome.

The focus-peaking really helps with manual focusing, and you're only dealing with a 1.5x crop instead of m4/3's 2x. Although with the Olympus bodies, you do get in-body stabilization.

Yeah, those early m43 bodies don't have real good high iso, but I don't think the nex-3 is real steller either in that department. It's not until you get up to the -5n and e-p5 that the quality takes a big jump.
