Their facecam is more often than not larger than the postage-stamp sized video of the game they are playing. That's all you need to know in order to make a judgment.

Becky's actually really drat good at making costumes and a lot of effort goes into them. In fact, while we've never been given a full behind-the-scenes, it's clear Fraser puts a lot of effort into the video and audio mixing of the show, with a very complex system being used to pull off their multi-screen green-screen setup (which, remember, is being streamed live).
This is the reason why I stayed watching VGA for as long as I did - it's pretty much one of the most technically competent shows out there, which is fairly depressing given that "the production qualities were excellent" isn't the most ringing endorsement of anything except LPs. Really, they just seem to put a shitload of effort in in general. On the other hand, though, there's Fraser.

Thanks to whoever pointed out the "Two Best Friends Play" guys have their own channel. I'm halfway trough their Indigo Prophecy LP and its really funny.

I would like to add to the small discussion about SDA on the previous page: If you want funny commentary that's not from the __ Games Done Quick marathons, check out the recently added Lagoon and Drakkhen runs. You have to download them to get access to the 2nd audio track, but especially for the Lagoon run its worth it. It also happens to be the only deathless single-segment run of that game in existence (not counting TAS:es).

The first time I'd notice Let's Plays on Youtube I was watching The Auzzie Gamer play through Hitman: Blood Money which was around 2010. I'm not sure if anyone else here would like him and it's been years since I watched any of his stuff. In fact, I just watched a year old video to see if he still holds up. He's definitely more showcasing his personality than being thorough on his LP's but he does it in an interesting way. He walks you through the game and his videos are done with post-commentary, which allows him to insert failure clips or just gently caress around for a little bit before going on and to speed up unnecessary sneaking sections. He does ~goofy voices~, but I haven't heard him resorting to babbling incoherently yet. He's also good at the games he plays so he's not relying on the tried-and-true method of being a really lovely player and how frustrating it is to play for complete strangers on the internet. He made sure to show how to get Silent Assassin in every level in Blood Money while still having fun messing around with the game. He had a gimmick of setting off an explosive in each Blood Money level and follow it up with a musical sting. The latest video is five months old, so I'm not sure if he's still active or not.

He also does custom images for his videos.

I like them, they show what game he's playing and whether it's an LP or a review or a multiplayer vid. The custom image trend with a scared face superimposed over everything are pretty useful for letting me know to not click on those videos.

The first time I'd ever seen a scarecam was on 4 Player Podcast videos before they'd made their own site. I was looking through videos of Fatal Frame to see if Crimson Butterfly was worth a purchase and found this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb1nVP6RX7E
I used to think that was funny. :cripes: Looking back on it now, the streaming quality is crap and Brad shrieking through his mic is worse than anything the game could throw at him. There's tons of these from 4PP where the whole "appeal" is a bunch of guys playing horror games blind while someone in the chat nudges them along until a jump scare happens and cue Brad flipping his poo poo and shrieking over everyone else.

I watch an awful lot of LP channels.

Robbaz and birgirpall, Swedish and Icelandic Vikings. Robbaz plays an awful lot of Kerbal Space Program, and birgirpall keeps changing formats, and is now on "I Broke X." Both would play Battlefield 3 an awful lot and look for interesting ways to kill people that the developers might not have intended.

KSIOlajideBT, mostly FIFA but then he has his other channel where he plays lots of other games. Screams a lot in his goofy British accent. Has absolutely loving crazy hits. Seriously, I think this is just a teenager living at home with his parents, but his user base is freakishly large.

Joined at the hip are Jerma985 and STAR_, mostly TF2 but with funny commentary and flirtations with other games. Remarkably insightful for running commentary.

GameSocietyPimps has an awful lot of material, but thus far my favorite is Fallout 3 For Pimps. They've got 41 episodes thus far. Really crude.

They're both pretty terrible at the games, but it seems like her brother generally shows a semblance of competency. At one point Felicia got Sonic stuck down a hole where you have to rock back and forth to get momentum, and couldn't get him out for what seemed like 5 minutes. Then proceeded to talk about how terrible the game was if I remember correctly.

They've changed the show a bit lately to be more positive - probably in response to the backlash from that episode. Before that it was basically them playing old games very poorly (while mocking them) and then saying they sucked. It's actually kind of unfortunate because if you had a couple good gamers playing through retro games they weren't familiar with it might actually be interesting.

One of my guilty pleasures is Nika Harper, who I found through the Geek & Sundry writing vlog a while ago. She isn't exactly good at Spelunky, but her enthusiasm and effort tends to make it entertaining regardless. Occasionally she has a facecam, but most are just the game - though if you do check them out I'd recommend something other than the most recent since it's with other people and the sound quality is a bit crap consequently.

While we're on the topic of Geek & Sundry, they also have a board game show which I'm sure some of you are familiar with called Tabletop. Hosted by Wil Wheaton it's informative, let's play-ish, and I'd highly recommend checking it out.

Those are really helpful when watching a downloaded video, although Youtube's thumbnail browser is also handy because it lets you see when the game resumes.

I think the pacing of the first Darkseed longplay makes it one of the most enjoyable ones you've done so far, because it's played pretty much like a speed run, but without skipping any of the text. Darkseed II almost felt like it was being played in-character as Mike Dawson, who bumbles around, talking to the same people over and over again, ponders his horrible decisions in life in the bathroom, acts completely disinterested during 'that moment' in the story, and wastes time during the only part of the game where he knows exactly where to go and what will happen if he doesn't get there in time. However, since so much of this depends on the player wasting our time, it gets really tedious outside of the moments where it really shines. Some of the videos did have cuts, where you note that absolutely nothing happened, so you did improve the pacing a lot near the end.

I think Let's Plays need to stop trying to show the viewer absolutely everything about the game, unless that's the aim of the LP. The Deadly Premonition series by SuperGreatFriend was very well put together to show all of the game's content, but in the later videos I found myself skipping over driving sequences that didn't have any dialogue, and then pretty much all of the non-story sequences because of how long the videos went on for. I know that it might be too much to ask, but it could have been possible to edit together the LP so that only the main story and interesting gameplay is left.

tiistai posted:

There's two primary communities: Speed Demos Archive which hosts user-submitted world record videos (that can be really outdated in some cases like Zelda games where WRs are made several times a month and nobody bothers submitting them to SDA) and has the most prominent speedrunning-related forums; and SpeedRunsLive which is basically the frontpage for currently streaming speedrunners... oh, and they organize races too I guess.

Awesome Games Done Quick is hosted by SDA and a lot of its runners are SRL-famous people.

As for shortness being the reason people do speedruns, I kinda doubt it. I could find quite a few games both old and modern that have world records several hours long.

edit: Granted, the old games being mainly by Squaresoft.

I've been really enjoying the Speed Demos Archive charity marathons, because the games are played really skillfully and are commentated by people who really know what they're talking about. It also lets them explain a lot of the tricks and exploits they're performing, instead of having to read a document alongside the video which lists everything that they do.

Probably the most entertaining one from the last marathon would be the Sonic the Hedgehog run by Naegleria. It's nothing like a serious speed run, but it should be really entertaining for someone who has never been interested in the game before. The only problem I have with these videos is finding where the run actually starts (it's usually easy to tell by seeing when the timer begins), and cropping it in VLC so that the game takes up the entire screen.

Yeah, it doesn't really fit the thread (although I suppose we've had board games LPed here before) but Tabletop is pretty cool if you're interested in board games. I love Tabletop. They also occasionally, during off-season stuff, put out "full" episodes of the games that they played that season. There's still the helpful popups that come up, but there's no editing out footage. I watch a lot of speedrunners on Twitch. The general speedrun community is incredibly positive aside from Twitch chat stream monster phenomenon in the larger streams.

Many Speedrunners also stream some casual, low speed attempts at games. You might even call them LPs. Many of them even claim that when their run fails that it's now an LP. There's even a sub community inside SRL's IRC called #blind that attempts to race games they've never played before. Blind Races are incredibly fun to watch, some serious pain when Megaman Unlimited came out.

Some personal standouts:

twitch.tv/Pjdicesare : Actraiser 2 WR holder, Super Ghouls and Ghosts WR holder, WORMS RELOADED. Just got sub recently. Runs amazing bad games like Mohawk and Headphone Jack, Lawnmower man, Battletoads and Double Dragon. Examples from a previous AGDQ:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bcwOiesWF4
SGNG WR:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGnZbgQFLjI

twitch.tv/romscout : Runs Metroidvanias, SoTN esepcially. Plays a poo poo load of SMT on stream too.

twitch.tv/omnigamer : Runs Nier, Suikoden and tons of obscure SNES titles (Hagane, Soul Blazer) and also badgames (Timecop, The Firemen, Kendo Rage.)

twitch.tv/sinisterwon : Mike Tyson's Punchout wizard. Super Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, TMNTIV, amazingly cool dude. Will play MTPO blindfolded from time to time. Knows more about MTPO than the entire world minus one or two other guys.

twitch.tv/feasel : Something of an NES specialist. FF1 WR holder, plays Technos games, Zelda 2 and other odd ducks. Best stream chat on twitch since the median age of the audience is probably 30.

There's other incredibly popular speedrunners like Cosmowright, Siglemic, Werster, but their chats are often insufferable. There's quite a few goons involved in the scene too. Murphagator, UsedPizza, __Peaches (furry drum circle) Duckfist, SRK Funkdoc (been on hiatus a while), heeheex2 are all amazing.

Cosmo is incredibly chill and kind hearted. His commentary while pulling off insane 1 frame tricks and setups is enthralling. This guys name is Lanipator. Anyone who is familiar with the abridged series might recognize him, but he also makes LPs. I like him because he has mainly played horror games, but approaches it in the opposite way of Pewdiepie. He is also quick to think of jokes and commentary without it getting too boring. I would recommend his LP of Amnesia to start with, or his LP of Slender which is a condensed form of what he usually does. He also does a gimmick let's play where he pretends to be his abridged characters that should be avoided at all cost, but thankfully isn't found on his own site.

I used to find some decent LPers by using search strings like this, and I'm not exaggerating:

quote:

Let's Play -newrelease -newrelease -newrelease -pewdiepie -tobuscus -minecraft -commentary -slender -scarecam -facecam -reaction -scary -"Gameplay commentary" -"Let's Play Walkthrough"
(newrelease just being whatever games were hot that week/month)

And any other common words used in terrible generic LPs with a - beside them usually cuts it out of the search. I stopped doing this a long time ago because it became useless as more and more people wanted to be like those I'd be trying to filter out, yet they'd be nobodies who's names I couldn't possible filter out.

In short, it's really hard to find interesting non-SA LPers on YouTube because of how bloated it is with copycats of the guys at the top.

Yeah, that method is a great way to find about a million videos that you don't want to see ever at the same time. It reminds me of how people will simply spam their Tags section with poo poo like "-New Release-" (similar to the method above) even if the video is four hours of Minecraft just to get some people looking for video of a different game.

Which reminds me of someone I think everyone should avoid at all costs: DJ Keemstar. It shouldn't be too hard because he constantly has his channels shut down. The guy basically bottom feeds on Call of Duty YouTube Superstars and "Trolls" them by posting YouTube comments and stirring up comment drama, then he makes videos documenting the drama he started with one of his other profiles. He does the same thing, just listing out tons of unrelated stuff with each video and getting hits by people confused on what he is doing.

I have a bookmark on RZX Archive. It's a channel accumulating not let's plays, but rather uncommented longplays of ZX Spectrum games. Not just the good or well-known games. There's also a longplay of The Sentinel there: 6 12-hour videos, and the final one only 8 and a half hours long. Going by the level 1 (the first 8 minutes) that's a speedrun basically, because the player sucked all the energy out of the map and skipped 20 levels afterwards.

Yeah, it's bad. Part of that is because people absolutely spam their tags with poo poo. A Beyond: Two Souls LP may get tagged with "Beyond Two Souls, Beyond: 2 Souls, Beyond, B:2S, Beyond: TS, Beyond: Two Souls, Beyond: Two Souls (Video Game)" and so on.
