I haven't been too much into metal for a couple of years now, but the new Skeletonwitch sucked me in again. Don't hate, this is an incredibly loving awesome album. Also love the new Carcass. Anything else I should really check out while I'm at it?

Now it seems like I hear a lot of albums where, if I zone out for a couple of minutes, I honestly can't tell if I'm still on track one or if I'm seven songs in. I think a lot of bands get really caught up in either worshiping a particular sound (lots of re-thrash bands) or in crafting their own unique but super specific sound (Protest the Hero, Fleshgod Apocalypse) that it boxes them in and starts to take precedence over actual songwriting. Maybe that's just because I've forgotten/never even heard all the boring repetitive albums from the 80s and 90s and only remember the gems, though. Or maybe the fact there's so much more to listen to now means I'm just exposed to more bands with mediocre songwriting chops than I was then. Anyway, one nice thing about Skeletonwitch is they seem to kind of realize this and cut things short enough that the song and/or album is over before you get sick of it. It amazes me how many albums I listen to where I love it for the first 3 or 4 songs and then realize that there are 12 tracks and they're all pretty much the same.

They were untouchable from Killing Technology through Nothingface. Black Future sounds a bit more clearly influenced by Aspid, honestly. There are a lot of similarities, but Vektor are quite unusual and there aren't many convenient bands to compare them to. I think the thematic change that accompanied Voivod's transition in style circa 1988 is what really solidifies that comparison in the minds of most people as being so similar to Voivod. Aside from Voivod and Toxik, there are also similarities drawn from Watchtower and Mekong Delta as well as Coroner and Realm, with no particular ordering of those influences. People tend to disagree when I mention it, but I think Vektor also draw influence from some weird Japanese bands like Gargoyle and Sex Machineguns. I think the themes have also shaped their music aside from the most apparent music influences in metal - the "space" sound of the space age, especially sci-fi, is something they really embrace, as well as having a wide variety of prog music from old space/prog rock to modern progressive metal. Vektor pull together a lot of things into the theme they embrace, it's quite unique and I don't think comparing them to Voivod even covers half of what they do. I think the retrospective glance at 80s metal, for these bands, is incredibly limited, because there are so many bands whose boundaries are roughly set by DRI/Exodus/Municipal Waste on one side and Metallica and Slayer on the other side, but they don't even use melodies like Metallica did, they don't have the evil fantasy feel of Show No Mercy or the darker atmosphere of Seasons in the Abyss, and when songs are long, it seems like it's for the sake of having long songs - the long songs on the last Lich King album were painful to listen to and I have no idea why they were eight minutes instead of three. There are also almost no singers, not even gruff attempts to sing, most of the time it seems like it's either a punkish shouter or an almost-growler. Singers tend to be found more in the heavy/power/speed side of things though. There's not much melody in the riffing either - the influence of Iron Maiden, NWOBHM bands like Diamond Head and Tysondog - I don't understand the point of going back to thrash and not retaining that. There's such a focus on a limited range of thrash that bands that were seen on the leading edge of black/death metal seem to be overlooked - it's odd how a retro thrash "underground" has popped up without any bands like Bulldozer, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, and Sabbat - the stuff like that, while still being some sort of extreme thrash, seems to filter wholly into the oldschool black/death crowds and it's overlooked by rethrashers. Kreator/etc seems to be respected though. Odd. Take thrash, in general, and take away the melody, the dynamics, the singing, the explorative songwriting into concepts, the more extreme and rougher fringes, and what do you get? It's basically high school punk bands playing thrash and it sucks.
