Ugh, every time I play this game or tinker with my lists I get a massive irrational urge to buy more models. Thank God there aren't too many options for Military Orders at the moment!

How have any PanO folk found Magister Knights? I kinda want to pick up the box set since they seem pretty solid for their points cost, but the one MK I've been using from the box set has kinda underperformed in most games I've used it in. Is CC at all viable? Maybe supplement the list with some LGL fusiliers to get them into combat range? Though that sounds fairly gimmicky.

Flipswitch

CC in Infinity is a distant secondary thing, PanO especially is a shooting army and the Knights are no different.

I love Magisters in MO, a link team of them really will gently caress people off, because the ML guy is an rear end in a top hat. It's an expensive list, but they're a great option.

Not trying to sound clever buddy, but if a sniper can spot your entire force (or even half of it) from one point, your terrain is hosed and the table is the fault.

This. In our games we learned that having high spots in the DZ is not really an issue on a good board. They key point is making sure there are no huge fire lanes that let 1-2 models dominate the board.

Like wise, removing terrain from the DX and just placing it in the middle is no fix. So many sniper-equvalent models have Infiltration that you may just be making the problem worse, giving a specialist a midboard tall spot while depriving opposing big models of good cover (especially for TAGs) and comparable defensive positions.

Building a good board that doesn't reward camping but also doesn't make long-range fire useless is an acquired skill. You'll know you're there when most of your engagements happen in the 16-24 inch range or close. It's alright to have a few across-the-board kills in a game. When most of them happen that way and there are no safe approach paths that at least let the other model fire at their good range band, then you know it needs changing.

A bit of work on the base and a few washes here and there on the sword and mechanical bits and it'll be done. Sadly the sword came bent and broke easily; pinning it back in place was a pain and it still feels a bit fragile.

Can't wait to field it in my Penthesilea list.

That looks cool. I can't wait for mine to arrive now!

Just back from a few interesting games - a highlight was a 300-pointer versus Nomads, where the scenario was for the attacker (Aleph in this case) to break into a no-fire zone (all remotes, camo, visors and guns did not work in this zone) and deal with some scientists while the defenders had to reach them first and extract them.

I ended up winning with a dying Naga using his Dogged actions to lay a pile of monofilament mines at the door to the science lab, then an Asura running in to punch one of the scientists. This caused a kind of chain of dodges as the Asura would take a swing, the scientist would dodge and move away. Eventually one of these dodges caused the mines to detonate and leave nothing but mincemeat in the lab while the Asura was safely out of template range.

My Aleph army takes a certain delight in overkill in assassination missions; civilian victims have variously died to HMGs, double-action sniper rounds and now two mono-mines exploding at once.

Pretty sweet releases this month. I'm a bit disappointed that all of the Dire Foes boxes are out at the same time. I'd would have liked to see them staggered since they each have their own mission/scenario.

Also, I'm cripplingly disappointed that Fusilier Angus doesn't have his lovely grin from the control artwork.

Played my first game tonight against a friend who also has never played. I made up both lists (posted earlier) and laid out the table.

Man, they are not joking when they said you need a lot of terrain. I had set up a scenario with three objectives one of which was randomly selected to contain the MacGuffin. One was inside a building, one in a forested area, and the last in a small square in the centre of four buildings.

The first two objectives were both claimed early but the one in the clearing turned out to be the one we needed to take. I had parked a Janissary w/ AP Rifle just around the corner of one building and systematically gunned down his entire team from behind.

So I realize the mistake with the objective/terrain layout, but is it normal to see one model systematically chew through all the orders and wipe entire forces off the table?

When the other side doesn't have a way to prevent it, sure. I think that avoiding that sort of thing is what drives most of the game's positioning.

What basically happened is that the third objective became immediately critical so he rushed it with combined orders using a unit a four Order Sergeants who were taking ARO fire from my Lasiqs. They reached the objective but didn't have enough orders to retreat, so I just walked my Janissary up behind them and dropped four or five orders to gun them down. Since none of them were facing behind, none received AROs and didn't turn around/return fire/dodge or anything.

Did we do that right? If they have no LoS/LoF they get no ARO even if they are being shredded by AP fire?

You can ARO to change facing (ie. towards your attacker) but the attacker might have to be within your Zone of Control if the model reacting isn't the one being shot at. I'm not sure. Maybe if a friendly model goes down in your ZOC you can change facing?

For the guy(s) being shot at they can ARO to turn and face, but they still have to survive. If they do they can ARO normally against the next attack.

TKIY

But if the attacker is out of your ZOC (in this case the Janissary was lighting them up from 16" away) and you are being hit in the back so no LOS you never generate the ARO to turn and face the attacker, unless we are doing it wrong which is entirely possible given that this was a first game.

When someone gets hit they can turn around and so can every friendly model in their zone of control, so after your first order all of them would have turned around assuming they're close together. It was really stupid of the guy to have all of them facing away from somewhere an enemy model can come from though.

Bingo, that's what we missed then.

As for stupid, it was our first game. Until we actually played it I don't think either of us realized just how bad it is to get caught in the open.

I think the model being attacked gets to turn and face regardless of the distance. They certainly do if they get shot at and survive.

Angus is a mascot for the PanOceanian line infantry. Yeah, if you're not in cover in Infinity then you're dead. Heck, you're dead even if you're in cover - it's just going to take a higher investment of resources to finish the job.

So I just discovered today that the Order of Dobrzyń is a thing in Infinity. That's frickin' awesome! I am compelled to finally build and paint the starting MO list I've been contemplating for a while:

Panoceania - Military Order | 7 models
________________________________________________________

Teutonic Knight Spitfire (46|2)
Teutonic Knight Lieutenant (42|1)
Teutonic Knight Combi (42|0)
Magister Knight Shotgun (31|0)
Order Sergeant Combi (13|0)
Order Sergeant Combi (13|0)
Order Sergeant Combi (13|0)
________________________________________________________

200/200 points | 3/4 swc
open with Aleph Toolbox : http://goo.gl/QlL4pC

Planning to link the Teutons and go nuts. I already have one, since I was interested in painting a knight, so I'd just have to buy the starter and the Teuton Spitfire. Probably going to paint up the knight I already have as a test for the color scheme, then pull the trigger if I like the look.

Planning to do the whole army as an Oath:

Panoceania - Military Order | 9 models

Teutonic Knight Spitfire (46|2)
Teutonic Knight Lieutenant (42|1)
Teutonic Knight Combi (42|0)
Order Sergeant TO Sniper (39|1.5)
Magister Knight Shotgun (31|0)
Order Sergeant TO FO (29|0)
Order Sergeant TO FO (29|0)
