It's an odd engine, the flywheel appears to bolt to the 'front' of the engine, where the timing is, yet the exhausts face the other way. I'd guess a lemans prototype powerplant from the 80's? Still has a distributor.

I was going to say maybe a Honda Indy V8 that was used up through 2011 (NA 3.5L V8) but ultimately that was Honda slapping their names on an Ilmor-designed engine; I don't think it ever had Mugen on the valvecovers. Now that I dig up one of the above engines, definitely not - they were COP, no external wires.

I found some old photos of Porsche meetings my dad attended in the early and late 1990s. He had the yellow 924 and dark blue 944. link. In the pictures with the yellow one, some of those 944s weren't very old at all..
