The ability to carry two items in to a mission is a Forge Upgrade now instead of a skill that you have to pick on a character and it's loving amazing being able to carry two items on every non-MEC. I'm hanging out late-game now, the most recent story mission was the Base Defense mission (holy poo poo that was amazing) and my most recent council mission was the one where I finally tracked down the convoy in France and met the cargo. I'm up against what used to be end-game aliens - Muton Elites, Sectopods, Mechtoids mostly with a few Seekers thrown in (not sure if there's another tier of alien now in EW or not) and things are just freakin' sweet. I'm burning through huge swathes of rookies by running missions with 3 MECs (one with the badge that provides +25% exp to all low-rank soldiers) and three Squaddies because all of my high-ranking soldiers except this one MEC died in the last story mission. This expansion has completely changed the pace and tone of the entire game and I felt like I have spent every minute thus-far hanging on for dear life and praying I can finish some R&D before the enemies ramp it up again, wow. Yeah, jesus christ. The amount of missions and variables it's throwing at you know is incredible, hahaha. Feels like mistakes and poor planning are really punished for the average player. That said my favourite thing is - and I seriously do mean this - the soldier languages being expanded. It's so much fun and adds a huge layer of chaos to the fights. Well just beat Enemy Within for the first time. Only my 2 mech troopers survived the suicide mission everyone else perished. Killed the final boss with a kinetic fist punch in true Welcome To Erf fashion. One of my mech troopers had been like on 39 missions and was pushing about 140 kills. God I love mech troopers. One funny thing I noticed that the end game stats screen showed the average money spent by players and the average was like 900,000 and people had 300 scientist and engineers.

Ugh. gently caress the first portent mission. I was doing completely fine, was about 2-3 turns out from getting the VIP evac'd, and then I'm wondering why I can't move my VIP for some reason or make him take cover. Weird. At least he's in full cover and has 360 protection so it's not the end of the world. Nope. Thin man runs the gauntlet and one shot crit snipes him out of full cover, probably because I couldn't make him duck down. God damnit.

So it's scripted that the thin men have a 100% crit chance now right? They've never failed to do it. Ever.quote:
I'm doing it now and the game has spawned thin men such that it is a physical impossibility to put him in a position he will not be flanked. I'm glad I'm not doing ironman because I'll be hosed if I'm restarting the game until the one time the thin men do not triangulate him. e: And that's critical hit number 10 in a row for the thin men. And the sectoids can shoot through floors now! Meanwhile, my sniper cannot shoot something literally five feet in front of her. It's not an option. It's probably obvious, but Ghost Armor does not stack with Mimetic Skin. That is, the stealth functionality on a Ghost Armor suit does not function when equipped on a Mimetic Skin genemod soldier. Despite the defense bonus, I'm kitting out my MS soldiers in Titan Armor instead, and the results are just straight up ridiculous. Like, I managed to accidentally wake a pod of three Chrysalids on a supply ship, so I R&G'ed one of my Lt. Assaults in to Alloy Cannon one of them in the face. She has 21 HP with Titan Armor, plus a sheet of Chitin plating, but I still had this horrible gut-turning feeling from having multiple Chrysalids ending the turn adjacent to one of my troops. So they both tickle her for 3 damage each, then they both ate Alloy Cannon from the Up Close and Personal bonus. She's also Psionic, not that I even have an opportunity to use it. Also jfc Anette is like the picture of what would happen if you gave a twenty year old civilian girl a suit of power armor and a plasma cannon. It would be cute if she wasn't so insubordinate and pissy about everything. At least she can shoot straight. "Reload!" "Give me a moment, I'm not a weapons expert!" Ah who am I kidding it's still endearing (like 70% of XCOM is female in this game, it's very rare to have even one dude on a mission)

RBA Starblade posted:So it's scripted that the thin men have a 100% crit chance now right? They've never failed to do it. Ever. Move the VIP really, really slowly. Or not at all on some turns. Each hot-dropped Thin Man has his own threshold for the VIP to cross in before the alien bugger drops in and pisses you off. So move the guy forward a few tiles and get everyone ready. Then clear out all aliens that fall, clean up, move the guy forward a few more tiles again. If you're careful, the return trip won't be too bad. Going up in the first place sucks because of that stupid set of three Thin Men that are nearly impossible to not trigger all at once. If you activate either the group of two or the lone one, they'll almost always run to where you have to trigger the other group to get a kill.

Biggest tip someone gave me is: Never use anything but high cover. If an agent is within sight of an enemy and is in low cover, pull him back out of range or at the very least, hunker down. Try to reveal aliens/terrain at the start of your turn, before giving moves to any others. Also, don't dash unless you know the path is completely safe (this way you can always pulls back to your original cover if aliens are unveiled)
