Overall the MECs seem like a much stronger force on the field than modded soldiers. MECs are a new class and add a whole new dynamic to your missions. Gene mods just buff your soldiers with really useful mechanics (bioelectric skin is really really cool for how it detects nearby enemies through walls and stuff, the high jump thing is ultra useful on a lot of missions, the aim perks are good etc etc). You're intended to get both IMO but I would value the MEC over gene mods in the early game.

Why do people keep saying it's hard to get Meld? I'm at the start of Month 3 in my first classic game, and I haven't missed a Meld Cannister yet. In fact I was more hamstrung by the fact I wound up selling all my alloys in the first month to help get Five Sats in the air. My first terror mission was fun, too. It was a small map so the Chryssalids pretty much ran at me in the first Alien turn, stopping right in front of my lead MEC. Who had Flamethrower. I love panicking Chryssalids. Oh, and Germany and France are wusses and didn't wanna be in the XCom Club with 5 panic.

This is also exacerbated even more by the fact that gene modding squaddies in flak using ballistics is potentially a tremendous waste of money and meld. It's substantially easier to protect your meld/cash investment when it's in a huge armored robot with a powerfist that can move nearly as fast as your infantry can sprint than it's in a squaddie who is going to panic and hunker down next to a burning car after another squaddie gets killed by a thin man. Gene mods are definitely better saved until you have troops worth investing in and the technology to keep them alive long enough to take advantage. BenRGamer posted:Why do people keep saying it's hard to get Meld? I'm at the start of Month 3 in my first classic game, and I haven't missed a Meld Cannister yet. It's not particularly hard to collect canisters, but high tier MECs and heavy gene modding consume so much of it that even if you've got a perfect streak you will never have enough to do everything you want without farming. In particular, a tier 3 MEC will run you over 200 meld all told assuming you never need to replace the pilot, and fully gene modding a single guy can run you ~100-200 depending on which mods you prefer. At 20 meld per mission average(sometimes you get less because of a dick canister, sometimes you get more because of mechtoids), that's a lot of missions invested into one guy. Also, the most useful gene mods only become available after you've done some autopsies, so maybe in month 2. By that time you probably already have an A-team. Getting a Heavy-MEC first is a priority imo.

I'd much rather see a proper air war module, and being allowed to get more skyrangers but have to balance that with all the other poo poo you have to get. And maybe some missions where you send agents on diplomatic/propaganda missions to try to keep a panic 5 country around for another month, but Exalt or the Aliens can intercept the operative and turn it into a proper fight mission. I no, I still don't buy having an achievement for winning the game vanilla being some huge issue. There's like 4+ achievements for using MECs and Gene troopers in different combos. They ignored my troops and ran over to the beacon. 10/10 would use again.

I just got the chance to really dive into Enemy Within today and got a MEC up and running. She is a drat monster but I'm kind of regretting taking Kinetic Strike over flamethrower. I rarely get the chance to use kinetic strike, I thought it would behave something like Run and Gun and I could do it after dashing but I suppose that would be really overpowered. In any case, this railgun is just owning everything and since I turned an assault into a MEC trooper she's a drat tank. I haven't even had the money to start up Gene mods because I'm only at the beginning of month 3 right now, that'll probably be the next big investment I make. Or maybe I'll build a second MEC suit with flamethrowers.

Do the math...Commander I do the math and still think it's annoying, particularly because keeping that amount of panic down requires rushing sats, and sat rushing is just plain unfun. I think that with EXALT's propaganda mechanic, the way I managed to get things to work in the base game would work even better. With terror missions as the main source of panic creep, and abductions being fewer/the UFOs responsible could be shot down, I still saw panic slowly creep upward (even after getting global satellite coverage) because the best you could do on terror missions was keep panic from increasing.

Hey guys, if you're stuck not able to get the game to load without crashing at present, just disable the EXE from accessing the internet in your firewall. Seems to do the trick for me. I guess Firaxis are having some manner of server issues. If you just block your EXE you'll still have access to your Steam Cloud saves. Mechtoids would be pretty underwhelming if they couldn't potentially shoot twice. That would mean that even some rookie in carapace could survive getting dinged by one. It's not like they really show up in numbers; I think the most I've ever seen active at once was 4, and that was during the base defense.

Dumb newbie question! I don't see anything about Enemy Within in the OP; what's the consensus on whether it's worth getting? I will say, I feel like letting the first Small Scout pass to get a Large Scout is almost required now. You need SO much loving money in the first couple of months with Laboratories so much more important now, in addition to all the normal priorities like the OTS, alien containment, etc. I'm even thinking you should just sell off any UFO Nav Computers and Power Sources too. There's just so much poo poo you need to build yesterday.Happy Noodle Boy posted:Oh man did the game screwed me out of a terrifying mission. My Assault had Close And Personal, Rapid Fire, and Close Combat Specialist. She was pretty much constantly out of ammo, but she had SUCH a body count. I got out on the last turn with Smug Spaniard wasting a Chryssalid that had cut off my Support with a headshot. I never wanted to understand Spanish more than I did right then.
