This is true, I liked that movie. I really liked Howl's Moving Castle it's so fantastically magical (another movie though i think it's a lot different from the book so hard to compare)

Oh, if you've read a lot of yaoi, which you admittedly have not, read Mirai no Kioku. It's basically taking the piss at normal yaoi plotlines, something the artist does a lot, only this one's a little longer and comes into its own too. It's something that doesn't make sense if you aren't familiar with the genre it's dissing though.

Everyone I know raves about honeycrisp, but they're too drat sweet and too drat big for me. :(

What I did find at the local hippie co-op store, though, is a type called Ambrosia, which are my new favorite.

Yaoi is basically romance novels, but in comics form, primarily marketed at younger women. For the most part, these comics are only gay by fiat. They tend to be intensely misogynistic/homophobic (but really more misogynistic since often you don't even see the dil of the dude who is invariably on the bottom). It's gotten more complicated since the age of Gravitation and whatnot though.

Saiko Kunieda is like one of my top three writers. Also Yugi Yamanda and Nishisa Higashi for story. And Kaoru Uchida for big burly guys acting like twinks. Bu I haven't read manga in forever, I kinda miss the days of buying used manga on ebay and paying some random Polish student for bad translations.

Hmm. I remember that big mega thread of the "my friend thinks she's married to anime guys" or something:

Somewhere the topic of yaoi came up, and there was that disconnect on how her friend loved the yaoi so much, but didn't know a thing about sex or even what a penis looks like.

That's why I never read any yaoi, I just figured it was porn for squeamish for people to actually read porn.

If some of it's good though then sure, why not. I'm open minded!

Yeah, it's pretty weird since it's oriented towards people who are young and honestly kind of scared of sex. (They're often weirdly censored too, in part due to Japanese censorship laws.) People often scoff that it's not "real gays" and so women grow out of it, but a huge number of the women drawing quite realistic gay porn nowadays, and contributing to things like the Supernatural dog dick universe, have some yaoi exposure in their past.

I feel like a lot this is kinda just kinda Japan, rather than a reflection of the genre of comic. And it's like a lot of things, the quality of the writers is really variable, the good writers will address some of the issues, the bad writers just churn out crap equivalent to the worst of fanfiction.net.

Yeah, it's pretty weird of me, but at the same time the rise of this stuff is a pretty interesting phenomenon, at least to me, since we've reached the point where TV shows reference it and people are, like, aware of it. It's in Barnes & Noble and poo poo, isn't that nuts?

Honestly, as a rule, it's just loving awful, like as bad as your average fantasy novel.

Only fantasy novels usually only have bad art on the cover.

You're right Pick that it's no poo poo nuts and there's probably a legit cultural studies stuff that could be done on it but you're gonna get weird looks no matter where you bring it up because it's Japanese porn comics aimed at women who want to see dudes boning each other.

And honestly I'd expect the same weird looks if I hypothetically began discussing the artistic ins and outs of playboy cartoons or "lesbian" porn videos.

Nishida Higashi used to be the worst artist but her stories were so interesting (and actually had grown ups, not school boys), that it didn't matter. I think she must've hired a ghost artist 'cause she's much better now.

The interesting thing about yaoi and slash is that it's romance and porn for women by women and it's pretty different from what it seems men think women want.

I don't have much investment in who wins or loses, I just like watching them wrassle eachother. It's nice having something you can watch with the boyfriend and both enjoy for different reasons.

Yeah! That's the loving thing. It's so loving weird and it's so weird it happened. Only I'm not sure how weird the content is in the context of porn, period, as opposed to traditional women's-oriented porn. Like someone linked that VC Andrews screenshot that showed that only one of her books didn't have incest or something? I mean what the ever-loving christ! :stonk:

I don't get it. And that's why it's fascinating. (I think it's just because bookstores didn't seem to realize its content back in the day so it was the easiest porn for women for highschoolers to get. All you needed was the balls to walk in and buy it.)
