Sham bam bamina! posted:Ahahahahaha, effort is goddamn anathema to Tropers and this game is a drop in the bucket of evidence for that. No, you don't understand. I've dabbled in rpgmaker before, and I can tell you there's a fair amount of genuine effort put into the custom systems and how time works and stuff like that in the game -- but it's all in service of a game where Cloud Strife dresses up like an anime maid and helps save taoism for the Triforce E: I should explain further. The developer used a third-party scripting hack to implement all sorts of weird things into RPG Maker 2000, including his own (incredibly broken and terrible) custom save screen -- which is actually worse than the default one because it doesn't display whether or not you've saved to a file before, making saving/loading a case of trial and error. Similarly, lots of the attacks and skills use randomization in their effect, or have an external item cost, both of which the version of RPG Maker he used does not support; he had to code those as well using scripting. That horrible voice-over being cued to parts of the dialog (which is what made the intro so completely stupid) also would have required external scripting hacks. But then all the sprites are stolen, including a couple actually taken from DOS-era Ultima games, and the music is midi covers of The Eagles. It's loving baffling. corn in the bible fucked around with this message at 08:10 on Nov 25, 2013 |

What is up with the bizarre synching between the voice acting and the text? Like, how can you go through the effort of hacking in your own voices into RPG maker, watch the voices end before the subtitles even appear on the screen, and go, "Nah, thats good." Also, you just know that he thinks that joke at the end of the video about fighting rats again is the funniest thing ever and is listed as a double Subverted Lampshade Hanging Self Aware Deadpan Snarker on its TVTropes page.

In Troper news, due to getting a whopping one entries in the TvTropes Writing Contest, they've extended the deadline, so I've still got that to Twentington, blue-balled Troper author extraordinare, continues to be unable to write a single thing. quote:I think part of what is getting to me is handling the mundanities. If you can't find what's interesting in people living their lives, doing their jobs, then how the hell can you write something that speaks to the human condition? Why would you even want to write? Because they want to be writers SO BAD. Or more specifically, they want the status that comes with being a writer. To be empathized with and to have their crippling limitations accepted and perhaps even celebrated as part of a larger picture. They spent lifetimes thinking about how cool their project will be but they don't want to take that risk of doing something real or going through the work or actually structuring a story, editing it, showing it to someone, editing it, rereading, editing, editing twelve more times with some readings in there, etc. I write a little, and the first few times I went up to read short stories and poems it was completely terrifying. I had to get the cadence right, I had to deliver it clearly, and most importantly I had to face and overcome the fear that my stuff might be terrible(most of my stuff is terrible). But that's what art is. You put yourself out there and let people see you completely vulnerable. And if you've done your job right they'll recognize a bit of themselves in your work and it'll resonate. That's the payoff. It's not book deals or movie contracts. It's not a billion upvotes from a circlejerk of a website. It's touching other people by presenting yourself without the armor that we walk around with in our day to day lives. And you can't do that with a waifu.

I've written some long, probably very dull papers over the years, and people often think it's an easy thing to do because really you just read some things and write them down. But if you talk about all the stuff you have to actually do to get a project from idea to completion it's... not so simple. I never write fiction but I expect it's similar -- it's easy to have an idea and hard to tell whether it's a good one, or how to develop it, or whether to just give it up and do something else.

Most people who want to be a writer more than they want to write (e.g. me, sometimes) move on and do something else. It's really pitiful that anyone could throw out so much descriptive crap about a story which only exists in the Platonic ether and never, ever actually try to bring it to life. Apologies if this showed up already, all the tends to blur together eventually . From the Rape Is A Special Kind of Evil Discussion! quote:Considering the varying opinions on Dominic Deegan, would it be all right for me to add an entry on how the webcomic averted this trope by the instance of how the character Stonewater raped Melna when they were adolescents to save her life (explained a bit more under the webcomics section of Rape Is Love), and is not considered an irredeemable villian by the narrative? And a conversation down the page. OOZE posted:Does anyone think that this page is starting to get a sort of creepy, Unfortunate Implications feel to it? joeyjojo posted:how so? To anyone who is fortunate enough to have never read Dominic Deegan: The only reason the rape victim and her friend were angry at her rapist was literally because of demonic influence. The victim also falls in love with her rapist because he reminds her of her father. The main female character responds to the victim admitting that by making an incest rape joke to a rape victim.

The "writer" also explicitly stated that his goal was to write a "sexy rapist" character. Because murderers and thieves can be sexy, why not rapists?

Mookie also kept trying to "fix" his horrible writing decisions by justifying his characters' actions, which made him look even worse. Razorwired posted:Because they want to be writers SO BAD. This is the truth. I won the fiction portion of a creative writing contest at my university with a piece that I did in an advanced fiction workshop. The class was taught by Brad Watson. I don't think I'd have won a measly little undergrad contest that awarded me $100, a personal gift from the English department (a collection of Flannery O'Connor stories with a personal congratulations written inside the cover from the head of the English department), and a public reading without that man's guidance and direction. Being a student in Brad Watson's class is the reason I was able to put together a 15-page short story about a couple of con artists, cleaned it up after my assigned workshop date for that story, turned in the revision for my final assignment, submitted it for the contest, met with the grad student that was handling the fiction entries, trimmed it down and fine tuned it even more to fit reading the whole thing at the reading in a reasonable time, and going back and forth with her about my introduction and making it a better piece and tightening it up even more for reading. And the best thing I got told about my story during editing was that among all the other entries, mine was the only one longer than five pages and looked like something someone would be working on to try and get published in a literary journal. It was not at all easy. It took time thinking about it, outlining it, and reading it and re-reading it just to get a decent grade in the class. And I will stress again I would not have done it without Watson's tutelage and direction and listening to the other faculty and writers-in-residence that came into the class and talked about publishing and craftsmanship. These tropers don't know a god drat thing of what they're doing or anything outside their niches and anime circle jerks to even think about craftsmanship and artistry. gently caress these people.

It comes back, in a way, to all of their "True Art is [Something Derogatory]" pages: they have an absolute disdain for calling things art or non-art, and I think it comes from them having no comprehension of what it is, due to never having been actually exposed to any. Look at the media they latch onto, and why they like it. They don't find media engaging because it says something about life, they like it because they're stuck at the little kid stage of "Robot man goes BOOM!" Not that there's anything wrong with dumb fun media that means nothing (I loving love Pacific Rim), but tropers seem genuinely distrustful of media that aspires to be anything more. I think this was also the root of the issue of why they had so much difficulty removing the pedoshit: they genuinely can't distinguish between porn and art, or refuse to. Perhaps it's because they find real artistic works too challenging, but don't want to admit that all the media they consume is disposable spectacle.
