What the gently caress is the point of Apple care then? Already you can pay like $200 for an out-of-warrenty replacement if the need arises, so why spend $100 up front only to have to pay $50 later? You're at best $50 in the black and very easily $100 in the red.

You can get a replacement more than once. iPhones actually cost more than $200 to replace out of warranty now too – I don't know if that's been changed for iPads though.

You get two accidental damages at $50 each, but basically unlimited hardware failure swaps for free within 2 years. If the home button dies in your 11th month of ownership, AppleCare pays for itself.

I don't know anything about people being escorted out of stores in the UK, but the ruling in Italy was because they didn't clearly differentiate between the government mandated 2 year warranty vs. the warranty provided by buying Applecare in their marketing materials and when trying to make Applecare sales, not because they refused to provide service.

I'm looking at getting either the Air or Retina Mini. Playing around with them in the store today, I like the Retina Mini more in terms of weight (and price), but I'm wondering if the extra size will be worth it if I plan to do much handwriting/note-taking. Can anybody who does a fair amount of handwriting on their iPad / Mini weigh in on whether the extra screen size is necessary? Maybe it's something that can be mitigated with a good stylus?

Once you threaten any sort of legal action, Apple Retail folks are under orders to shut down, refer you to the lawyers, and offer no further assistance. You wouldn't be escorted out unless your reaction to being referred to a lawyer after threatening a lawsuit is to throw a loud tantrum.

If you plan to type on it as well though, the big iPad will be worlds better for touch typing. Granted you can just pick up whatever Bluetooth keyboard instead.

It was still registered and under warranty, so I took it in. They replaced a tiny piece. And told me "hey, it looks like someone was tinkering in here, and the fastener for this dealie over here is broke clean off. But we think we fixed it, so.. here you go." The issue remained, and I went back. They replaced about 1200 dollars worth of parts according to their invoice. EVERYTHING was new inside. EVERYTHING. They handed me the Mac. Never charging me a penny. The issue persisted. They said the last thing it could be was the logic board or some poo poo. I came back. After the guy went in back and had me waiting for 10 min, he came out with their lowest model 21 inch iMac (2011) which was leaps better than my 2007 model (btw which was only 20 inch...). He said they marked my other one up as a lemon. The thing was still in a box. Mouse, Keyboard, the whole shebang. 100% free.

I have friends that work at Apple and I'm pretty confident that once you're outside their manufacturer warranty (typically 1 year parts + labor) they charge for all the parts and labor. I had a 2010 iMac and the logic board was decided to stop working. Brought the unit into an Apple store around 2012 and they gave me a quote of $450ish to fix the unit.

It sounds like you got some great service. I had the opposite experience at the iPhone 5 launch. My brand new 5 would not connect the internet on wifi at work or at home so I took it in. I had actually taken screenshots from a traceroute app that showed 95%+ packet loss on the 5 and 0% loss on my old 4s. The guy at the store basically told me that the first step was to restore and set up as new, and that I could hang around the store while they did that or I could go home and do it(I lived 5 minutes from there). So I went home and did it, and the issue persisted. Back at the Apple store, the next guy gave me a raft of poo poo about the fact that it was brand new, and that it worked in the store just fine. Which it did, frustratingly. He even got his manager involved and the two of them grilled me for several minutes until they finally decided to replace the phone at my insistence. The 'genius' even said to me "What are you going to do when I replace this phone and it still doesn't work on your (my) wifi at home?" I said "I'll bring it back for another one." (My theory was that the g-band radio wasn't working and the store had n-band or whatever.) It was a very strange experience. The phone was literally 24 hours old and had just launched. I can't figure out why they ran my through the ringer- what kind of scam could I have been trying to pull? The whole thing left a very sour taste in my mouth, especially since I've had basically every iPhone serviced at some point and always has fast and friendly service until then.

I'm not defending them but I bet they get a lot of people who don't know how to set up wifi at home and you are the 1 in 1000 that had legit problems and they've never seen it before and they were used to be right. It's annoying they have you a hard time especially since you had pretty convincing proof.

Yeah, no excuses, that's terrible service. Usually on release day they will swap it out no questions asked, especially since you're in the return period. Can't win them all. I can't even imagine how many people go to them saying their phone doesn't work when it's a problem with their home wifi though.

Turns out Discover has a 90 day price protection guarantee that doesn't exclude Black Friday prices. Finally got into the store to play with the two retina iPads. The mini really is very nice. Text can be a little small in Safari but otherwise it seemed great. Easier to use with one hand too. Of course it was out of stock. And only two of the ten mini demo units were Retina. And I think their demo of the Wired app may have sold me on that. Retina magazines are much nicer than when I had an iPad 1.
