There aren't really any bubblewrapped-world ways of splitting firewood, they all involve extreme force, hard work, and/or swinging/turning heavy pointy things. It's the leg lean that got me. I have a cousin who lost their leg from a grain auger.

But yes, that contraption is unsafe and I'd rather do it by hand if that was the only option.

who needs a screw type splitter when you can just weld an axe head to a big fuckoff wheel and attach an engine? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6h6s7zVF7_o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kGIg-eTN_0

That's a wheel of doom at best. quote:I would recommend a kickback shield Love the way he welded that wheel on there, and the way the engine bounces up and down while it's running.

I'd rather split wood by hand than use any of those death traps. Great workout, it'll get you ripped in all the right places. I'd hate to see what happens when you put an old mesquite tree through one of those things, some of those videos showed pretty gnarly kickback on softish looking logs; mesquite will deflect axe heads with ease and probably knock one of those booger-welded axe heads right off.

I used my roof rack on my E30 to transport race tires to AutoX. I would line em up and stick a pole through the centerbores and then strap that to the racks. Solid as a rock, but a rather tremendous airdam for a decent hit to MPG (from 20-22 down to 16 or so when driving to the site... ouch) Also another manly man chiming in that axe and/or chisel and sledge is the way to do it for splitting. I got good enough at splitting that even my pansy brother would sit in a chair next to the splitting stump and hold pieces with his hand for me to split. The worst he ever got it was a rather nasty splinter when a piece of oak split rather... violently. The trick is to let the mass of the axe head do all the work for splitting; then again, I was using like a 3-4lb axe head and I sharpened the motherfucker to a razor's edge before every splitting or cutting session. The only time you should really be putting any real muscle into an axe swing is when you're chopping something down. I used to have some pretty goddamn fantastic shoulders. I still do, kinda, but the arms have gone a bit soft. Goddamn desk life

Those homemade contraptions are horrifying to say the least. Here's an awesome homemade splitter that won't horribly kill or maim you (unless you really want it to): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbYp0bVn4pI For comparison, a large commercial-grade unit, 10 cords per hour. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eengn9eNQw
