So I made the mistake of looking at Amazon's recommendations the other day.

Told me to buy the "30th Anniversary Edition" double disc set of Crystal Logic. Needless to say I hammered the buy button like a madman! Along with a few other CDs. Totally worth it. It's probably not rare, but after being lucky enough to see Manilla Road when the finally played in London the other year, I just had to.

Normally the Amazon recommendations are a little iffy but I shall thank the system for highlighting that disc to me.

Live poo poo, Binge And Purge is about as good as Metallica (and thus the genre :D) ever got: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56xH_3LVz24. San Diego and Mexico are ok too but post-Black album so I prefer Seattle by far.

I also like Annihilator's Masters of Rock video because a) I was there, got my Annihilator mug signed and b) they didn't have footage of some parts and had to pull some editing shenanigans to put it together, which is funny to watch. Jeff has a ridiculous neon guitar and overall I like the fast, technical kind of thrash that they play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfC5V6qrTl0

More AI-related, Ministry's Jesus Built my Hot Rod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXCh9OhDiCI
Coincidentally, the two Fear Factory songs are now very AI in my mind due to where I first heard them:

Eventhough it's not exactly recent by any metric, I kinda wanna say Blind Guardian's Imaginations Through the Looking Glass.... but I dunno.
I mean, their stage show itself isn't much to look at, but they ARE a freaking amazing live band because they have this magical connection with the crowd. Blind Guardian fans are crazy (I should know, I am one) and the atmosphere is incredible. I'm just not sure if it's conveyed through video.
The ending to Valhalla on this gig is a pretty perfect example though.

Basically what I'm trying to say here is that if you ever get a chance to see Blind Guardian live, loving take it.

They have the Svn Okklt comp on their list :psyduck:

but they put Deafheaven at number 1, allowing me to remain smug at their mainstream poserness. Yeah guys, the best metal album of the year is the one that every non-metal publication put on their list to show off how diverse their tastes are. It's not even the best blackgaze album of 2013.

They also didn't include the new efforts from Gigan, Portal and Voivod, which were all pretty fantastic. Or the new Dillinger album which got a ton of good press.

Hey, the fact that albums like that didn't make it into the list reminds me that this has been a very, very good year for metal.

They also mention how the new Sabbath and Ghost albums weren't very good. I appreciate that viewpoint. I haven't seen many other sites take that stance.

Really, I've been going through their list all weekend and I'm loving everything I've heard so far. It sucks that bands like Ulcerate are mentioned in the article but just missed inclusion, but you're exactly right: It means the year was that good. Can't believe I missed most of these.

it's a good album though!

I do agree that it's been a bit overhyped - like seriously, Deafheaven toured with Alcest in the US as a SUPPORTING act a year before this album and yet nobody gives a poo poo about Alcest who have been doing something very similar for years and years (and also inspiring angry genre arguments for about as long). I've noticed this a lot in metal where American bands often get unfair attention from the US music press but oh well. If the album was "more metal" it would probably be completely under the radar of most mainstream press and I don't agree with people who assume that's a good thing.

That said I usually love when bands put out these transition albums between black metal and shoegaze for whatever reason, I really like that unofficial genre. In lots of cases the albums prior to the transition can be straightforward, boring black metal that offers nothing new, and the albums after it will just be MBV worship (Niege of Alcest pretty much admits this in interviews), but the transition feels a bit unique. Although I told this to the only one of my friends that listens to metal and he got angry at me saying I thought the album was unique :v: Maybe that's the wrong way to describe it, I know it's been done before (Again, Alcest) but I like the way they've done it. I'm terrible at articulating music thoughts.

Also I completely forgot the new Darkthrone came out this year, I thought it was late 2012. It's Darkthrone doing their best impression of different metal genres in the 80s. It's good.

When it comes to huge lists like these I always find ignoring the top 10 - 20 picks makes it far more interesting and useful for picking out some unusual or missed releases. As much as I try not to care about rankings I'm really annoyed at In Solitude and Carcass being top 10, they aren't even top 50.

I haven't bothered to look at many other lists just yet; as a general rule the earlier it comes out the less interesting and well-thought out it is. One of the few blogs I follow put out a quick and easy top 11 the other day and there's some weird picks so check it out (I think there's one or two non-metal albums, but otherwise it's legit).
