I bought this set from YM Imports http://www.ymimports.com/p-2411-bamboo-34-go-board-double-convex-yunzi-stones-w-bamboo-bowls.aspx#.UqlOZJFhOFI I bought it on Cyber Monday and missed that they were doing a 15% off coupon, but I emailed them asking if I could still get it and they refunded me the 15% discount. When I got the board (pick up since I am local) I noticed it was slightly warped http://imgur.com/a/dlAAo I emailed them about it with the pictures and they said that since the warping was slight I could get an additional 15% refund, or I could exchange for a new board. Since it's my first board, I'll be carrying it around a lot, and it wasn't too expensive, I figured I'll just take the discount. Just wanted to share my experience. The board is beautiful and the yunzi stones are very nice--I wasn't planning on oiling them but once I got them and washed them it was obvious they desperately need to be oiled or else they look terrible. Considering the board by itself is $50 and the same stones in slightly nicer bowls are $70, I think I got a pretty good deal for an ending price of $70. e: beauty shots http://instagram.com/p/hplUKnEnyr/ http://instagram.com/p/hmE1dcEn7C/ http://instagram.com/p/hmFls2kn8S/

Here's pictures of that $101 floor goban from YMI http://imgur.com/a/5dt90 The playing surface is the only real "bad" part of it. So I just put my bamboo board over it: http://imgur.com/a/7n1Cz

KGS is great! The only real complaint I have is that there's no sound when you place a stone. That test also gives me a European 7k which is like a 4k in Japan. I'll take that as a compliment. AdorableStar fucked around with this message at 23:50 on Dec 13, 2013 |

The only experience I have with go is when I was working at a beach traveller camp in turkey and one night I was setting out dinner and noticed a huge amount of dorky looking awkward fucks in the queue and wondered what the gently caress until someone told me they were holding a go tournament over the weekend and these guys proceeded to goon the place up being antisocial and complaining about the music in the night bar and asking for skrillex and only drinking water or soda so gently caress go

Lee is way behind. White has like nine more captures than white, so it's even worse than it looks. Maybe Lee just got pissed at b6 or something; a move like that seems like a suggestion on W's part that he ought to resign.

I read that after Lee resigned they finished and counted normally, and he lost by 1.5. The sgf released by wbaduk is actually this non official version. Really weird in either case.

The package arrived! Here's the package: Stones + mousepad The actual board itself; it even has a 13x13 on the back! Now if only I can figure out how to place stones correctly, because proper technique is hard.

Lee is definitely behind, no matter how you cut it. Sometimes a pro will do weird things at the end of a game to resign or suggest that their opponent should; it used to be relatively common to do something like play two stones at once or retake a ko illegally to indicate that you were done. That said, I wouldn't trust a wbaduk transcription, they make tons of mistakes and weird poo poo. The game probably ends at 366.

Are boards ever made with tiny, shallow indentations at each vertex to keep the stones more stable, or is that considered uncouth?

They don't move around that much. If you want to be a freak about it, though, you can get a go board for the blind where there are indeed 361 cubbies you can put a stone in, which let you feel out the board without loving it up.

House Louse posted:Aren't Chinese stones flat on the bottom? Yeah they are, and I hate them for play. Though I do wish I had a set of Chinese stones for teaching purposes. You can just put them on the board upside down for showing things, then remove them to where you left off. Edit: Also plastic "stones" are terrible too. They get so greasy and oily so fast and just feel gross. Yunzi stones are fantastic though.

If you're fine without the lines being laid down properly as lacquer applied from a katana then YEAH I GUESS YOU COULD RUIN THE WHOLE THING GOD YOU USELESS GAIJIN. (That is actually the traditional Japanese way to do it, and as a result the lines are slightly raised from the board. I have not seen any chinese or korean goban makers, but I assume it is similar processes because tradition. I'm having trouble finding it at the moment, but there's an old japanese book that details the process. I've been trying to pick it up for a while just for the nifty factor --it's in japanese, so hard for me to use as instructions--, but amazon.jp sellers won't ship it outside of japan )

Yeah the japanese have this aesthetic thing for poo poo that's broken so they don't much care for a totally ordered board with all the stones equally placed, something to do with this or some poo poo
