Cross-posting from the prog thread:

So I just found this album and I think it's one of the best debuts I've ever heard from a progressive metal outfit, especially considering they are from Spain of all places.

Well produced (if a bit on the loud side, vocals are undermixed), very atmospheric, emotional, and powerful music. I'm not sure how to describe it. Riverside meets Enslaved meets BTBAM with the powerful and bombastic style of Symphony X? I'm kind of terrible at describing these things but check it out.

Download or listen to the whole thing on bandcamp:

Perhaps the two tracks I posted don't highlight it best, but Manzer varies from the black/thrash style on this one with some more melodic heavy metal type stuff. "Pictavia" is an anthem to their home region reminiscent of Iron Maiden's "Transylvania" that the trio even adds guitar/bass harmonies to at points, quite a memorable track. There's a mix of the more harsh black/thrash stuff and Venom style black/speed - something I've noticed (well, the frontman of Maximum Oversatan talked about it extensively) is that most Venom worship now tends to be black/thrash, without the NWOBHM/speed component of it as much.

Ketzer is good, but different from Manzer - it's sharp, aggressive black/thrash like Desaster. It's in the teutonic vein, as Germans tend to do, and on the more aggressive end of the style as you might expect of a band on IBH. What I find different with this Manzer album, even contrasted with their earlier albums, it's that it has the heavy/speed metal component strongly - it's catchy and melodic, and focused on that, rather than just being ripping and aggressive as black/thrash tends to be. Ketzer aren't really the same style, even if both bands are generally called black/thrash.

Same here as far as early 2014 plans. Manowar alone has been worth it already because of stupid lyric games between those of us who bought tickets, and also the looks of disgust from the wimps and losers.

I haven't paid much attention to Amon Amarth for the past decade, but I saw them a couple of weeks ago and had a good time. For whatever reason, my mental image of them has always been of a stern, serious band of war-mongering vikings, but the vocalist was all smiles, and there was far more crowd interaction than I'd expected. I mainly went to see Carcass (whose new album is totally deserving of being near the top of all the metal top 10 lists. :colbert:), though.

As far as metal concerts go this is one of the only ones I own (on blueray, it was insanely expensive when it came out) and its loving awesome. X-Japan were a really good rock/speed metal band from Japan, they went on hiatus in early 1998 and this was there last show ever with the original guitarist (who committed suicide or was maybe murdered).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NVEpqTTjkY

Dat fuckin solo.

There's also the live version of Valhalla from the Blind Guardian live DVD:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_nmJgNcems

In which Hansi is a big baby who doesn't want to do an encore, so the drummer and crowd do it themselves.

I'm also a big fan of Iron Maiden's Rock in Rio DVD/album, but thats because its got great mixing for crowd vocals that actually captures the feel of being in a concert.

Yeah, I think they did a heckuva job combining their earlier styles without making it sound the slightest bit dated. They played a short but sweet set of 45 minutes, with 3 new songs that fit in well with the classics. Nothing off of Swan Song.

I thought hide's death was a case of either suicide or freak accident? Never heard the murder angle before, I don't think, despite knowing a couple of people who obsess over both X-Japan and hide's solo material. Good call, though; X were an awesome spectacle back in the day, and hardly seem to have aged. I was really excited when they got back together in 2007, but they sure are taking their sweet time putting together their new album.

While I do appreciate them and like a few songs, I could never get that excited about X Japan myself.
However, this reminded me of Sex Machineguns, and how loving good some of their thrashy/speedy stuff is. If you can get past some Engrish and the signature Japanese wackiness, that is.
Came across this live gig recording, and god drat Iron Cross is a kickass track: http://youtu.be/CfMeRx_v9ps?t=37m

Also, if you can get a hold of any of their old SM Show DVDs, get it. drat good live stuff on those. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da2N0Hjca94
Again with the "welp, it's Japan" caveat, though. And too bad about the piss poor quality in that vid, but that's Youtube 2005 for you.

Surprisingly good. I mean, the whole folk metal genre has the problem of having So drat Many mediocre bands who all sound exactly alike or just generally uninteresting, so while I love certain bands like Crimfall and Ensiferum, my expectations are usually a bit low. (EDIT: I'm sure the same can be said for any genre, I just somehow feel like mediocre folk metal bands are really especially mediocre? I dunno.)

These guys at least have some sense of melody and they do all the basic things well enough. I wouldn't buy an album just now, but this is easily good enough to listen to.
Some of the vocal parts really seem to scream "We really want to be Ensiferum", though. (You should check out Ensiferum if you haven't already.)

Lost Horizon and Manticora are the best Euro power bands I've listened to, mostly because they know how to vary their tracks and write progressive songs that aren't boring or wanky. And of course Gamma Ray (also check out Iron Savior if you like them) and Blind Guardian own sometimes. For American power metal, Pharaoh is really good, and you can't go wrong with the oldies like Riot, Sanctuary or Jag Panzer.

What kind of power metal are you after? I suppose something really cheesy and flowery could go with WoW's cartoony style? :v:
Seriously though, Gamma Nerd gave good advice. Lost Horizon and Blind Guardian are two staple names that always get dropped in this thread when power metal comes up. Gamma Ray are freaking fantastic as well. And for some crunchier stuff, give Grave Digger a try. They're kinda like the Motörhead of power metal.
