like we both catch the train to and from work every day because our nightmarish socialist dystopia os a city has no parking but we still have two cars like normal people

Public transportation isn't bad around here and one of us can get to where we want to go via bus or train, or on foot (we live in a really dense neighborhood with a lot going on), so that's not a thing that's ever happened or been a problem.

Having another car because you might want to go somewhere else that the train won't get you to on the weekend just sounds ridiculous. $500+ a month, all said and done, for something you might only need two or three times a month is wasteful. I'd imagine that you don't like using the train when you aren't going to work and that's all well and good but if you count up the times you truly need two cars it's a lot less often than you think.

This is something that isn't or shouldn't be normal and really shouldn't be a thing, I can't imagine needing two cars and I don't think I would be willing to live somewhere it was necessary.

Also, the sense I get from your post is that if your city had adequate parking, you would drive in to work. That just sounds silly.

I live three blocks from a train station and that main train line will take me anywhere I need to be, and most of the places I want to be. There's a train there every twelve minutes during the day, and every half hour at night. That and my feet are far more convenient options than sitting in traffic ever will be. The sense I get from a lot of people is that taking public transportation is for poor people or children, and that you need to drive everywhere in order to be an "adult." That's a ridiculous way to look at things.

I used to drive to and from New Jersey and Pittsburgh for work when I was in my early twenties and I spent way too much time driving. I absolutely despise driving and every moment spent behind the wheel is a minute wasted.

This is the second one (because he got thwarted by the vent hood installation man). It was up to a few hundred fiats but someone just donated ~ $3k.

I really hope there's some clause saying you can't cancel your pledge if it would bring it below the limit.

i did the math and owning a car was costing me about $600/mo. maybe you have cheaper insurance or drive crappier cars, but that was my number. is it seriously worth $600/mo to resolve a conflict that arises a maximum of four times a month? (the weekends)

i kept two cars despite having a train commute for a while, but when i did the numbers it was stupid. i was mostly keeping the second car just so i could have MY CAR. it was a weird ego thing

i think i put 10 miles on MY CAR the last year i owned it. i had to ask my wife to drive it to work occasionally just to stop it from rotting out in its parking spot

For some reason in any place I've ever lived, having a car is an ADULT thing and you have to have one to be an ADULT and people will look down at you if you say you don't drive, even though we have the worst traffic in the country here outside of LA and NYC.

My neighbor has three cars for two people and parks them all on the street even though he has a parking pad out back for gently caress's sake.

What I'm asking here isn't necessarily what we're buying, but the easiest way to get something else with a year or two left on the current loan. I'm sure there'd be a loving involved somewhere but she wants to know and she likes the people at her dealership and I'm not going to dictate to her where and what she buys unless it's an obvious and real loving.

when you buy a new car, you are doing high stakes negotiating with a pair of professionals (the sales idiot in front of you and the guy in the tower). they negotiate $30k deals all day every day. you do it like, once every couple of years

the point is, you're at a huge disadvantage. every time you make the deal more complicated, you put yourself at a greater disadvantage. why put more balls in the air when you're already competing with a professional juggler?

if you buy cash (or with bank financing) you negotiate:
  • price

if you buy, and have a trade-in, you negotiate:
  • price
  • value of your trade-in

if you buy, and have a trade-in, and you want to roll up into a new loan:
  • price
  • value of your trade-in
  • interest on the loan
  • payment terms

if you lease:
  • lol gently caress this i don't even know all the words for things that get negotiated. this poo poo is complicated just for the sake of being complicated

if you pay off the loan on the current thing, that massively reduces the "surface area" for the dealer to gently caress with you
(if you can't afford to casually pay off a $5k auto loan, maybe you shouldn't be buying a new car)

good used car deals are much harder to find than they were before the financial crisis. new car sales have slowed, new car leases have slowed even more. not nearly as many 1-2 year cars on the market, lots more people chasing after them.

i'm not sure i would buy/lease a new car but it's not as plumb stupid as it was 5 years ago
