I gotta say though that I am consistently surprised by how well 30's and 40's cars handle wrecks, rollovers in particular. Granted, I wouldn't want to be INSIDE it, but mechanically, what the hell happened between the 30s and the late 70s?

Well, steel got rare during the war, I imagine sheet metal and frames got a bit thinner. And then we started caring more about the squishy things inside the cars.
