It's Christians because it's Satan. They wouldn't use Satan unless they were trying to specifically offend Christians. The problem is that the government in the area, a prominently Christian area, is made up of mostly Christians, like their constituents.

The ridiculousness of the proposal is what made it so popular, along with the r/atheism internet outcry as previously noted. The end result, though, is that people in the city would have to live looking at a monument to the most evil thing in the universe to them. So are they really going to allow it?

The answer is no. if it had been something else, maybe there could be a discussion about equality and diversity that actually loving goes somewhere instead of this stupid prank/stunt.

You're coming at this sideways. The goal of the Satanists here is to expose the inherent hypocrisies at play here. OBVIOUSLY Oklahoma is not going to allow this, that's the point. This isn't about starting a discussion, this is about reinforcing the separation of church and state by making the state so vile that the church runs screaming from it. The Satanic goal here is to make it so that NOBODY gets to have a display, which is the way it should be. Moneychangers and temples and all that.

Oh, one last thing on Satanic imagery: An upside-down cross is commonly known as "St. Peter's Cross" because Peter asked to be crucified upside-down because he didn't feel worthy to die the same way Jesus did. It's an expression of humble divinity and is heavily associated with the Pope. That's not going to stop bored kids from scribbling it in their notebook.

When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change.

Yes, an upside-down cross is actually a holy symbol and that depiction of Baphomet is not actually meant to be satanic or whatever. It doesn't matter. What matters is that people see it as satanic. Go to almost any Christian and show them an upside-down cross and they will tell you that it's sacrilegious. Show that statue to a Christian and they'll tell you that it's of Satan. This is one of those cases where the history really doesn't even matter anymore. You can tell them the truth about these symbols but that's not going to change them from associating it with Satanism.

A good and relevant example of this is when biblical scholars announced that the sign of the Anti-Christ, "666", might actually be "616". One source interviewed some Satanist about what he thought about this and his response was to the effect of "We're going to use whatever scares Christians more."

You would think that by this point in this thread people would have learned that the truth is of secondary concern to most people. Instead, what I learn from this thread over-and-over is that humans are obsessed with symbolism more than the truth.

My favorite bit is people saying that the Satanists are "clueless" about this when no, they aren't. They know full well that most of their symbolism isn't actually "satanic," and that's kind of the point, as illustrated by the guy talking about 666/616 you mentioned.

The point is that they put up the ten commandments and claimed it was justified under the first amendment. Since you can't sue them over that, you can go the other route and try to put up something they absolutely won't allow, which will force them to admit they don't want equal protection and take down the original statue. Abusing the constitution to promote your religion over others is wrong

A million times this. This is a case where it's absolutely acceptable to be as confrontational and inflammatory (and yes, offensive to Bible Belt Christians) as possible. Slapping the Ten Commandments in front of the OK State Capitol was a complete breach of our country's core fundamentals and the "well, the option's open to all religions (if they get enough support)" excuse that the people behind it have been giving doesn't make it any less wrong.

It's not about "lol christians suck," Drunk Tomato. It's about lighting a fire under these people's asses by giving them the "religious symbol" that they would least abide and forcing them to eat their words.

And while I know that self-satisfied internet atheists have made these sorts of criticisms kind of a dirty word around these parts, not every protest of the very real phenomenon of religious favoritism and minority subjugation is Penn Jillette douchebaggery. These people pretty obviously think that their religious views are more important than the Constitution and that needs to be challenged.

Some hippy-dippy "we can all be friends if we learn to understand" tolerance monument is not going to get the point across because the people this is aimed at couldn't give two shits about being tolerant.

Presumably they would go to covering the legal expenses of an appeal that would generate further attention for their cause and more national scrutiny of the original monument that set this whole thing off. I would imagine that they're not gonna just build the drat thing before getting permission, and as it's been said plenty of times before, building the statue isn't really the point of this whole endeavor.

Really? My favorite part is people who automatically think anything that might ever even incidentally involve atheism amounts to "gently caress YOU DAD". I think that's cool and smart and not at all reductive or dumb as poo poo, and I personally give everyone who expresses that opinion a big high five. They're clearly intelligent guys who've really got the world figured out. That's definitely my favorite part of this.
