Best part is how shocked Tag looks in the first panel - I know exactly how he feels, I think I did the exact same thing once as a kid. Not even thinking about it or the fact that it meant my friend was going to get hurt, and now Jay is crying and oh heck, I hecked up Here's all I could find from the Abbotsford Post (12 strips, sorry about some of them being partially illegible, not my scan or preservation): Imgur album. I wikipedia'ed it, and it turns out this was quite a popular comic in its day. These are from early on, though; later, Freckles and Friends became more about teenagers.

It's rare for Lio to have this much text in it; either Tatulli or his syndicate--I forget which--decided a strip with very little dialogue would sell better in international markets. Whether or not that's working out for them in this age of imploding newspapers, I don't know.

Traditionally pantomime strips sold poorly in newspapers because they were considered disposable. Since they look less time to read, readers wern't as invested as strips with dialogues and very few would complain if the papers dropped it. "Lio" is one of the few that became popular.

I think the dieing guy is the same person in the middle panel there because when the flashback started he was holding his hand up against his head, in the same way they're holding the phones. Fingerpori - Oh hi, Irma! I'm in some business training conference [Our values] [Objectives] - Looks like we'll draw lots on our objectives now -mme is the suffix for first-person plural, and like other personal suffixes it's used in most kinds of words where necessary: verbs, nouns, postpositions, some adverbs etc. Arvo is "value", so arvomme is "our values". Arpoa is "to raffle, draw/cast lots, have a lottery" etc, also used in a figurative manner ("to pick randomly" or something to that effect), and arvomme (p->v) is "we draw lots". Fok_it later today, I'm going to miss my bus otherwise

If you're even lucky enough to remember the lame setup the jokes are still completely nonsensical unless the butt of the joke is "haha look at how stupid this professional doctor is" and "haha let's make fat jokes about his fat head" which makes very little sense outside of the very specific context of the strip. gently caress you Mike Lester.
