How often did you have to resort to "cheesing" a boss? I just killed the dragon last night and I did it by hiding in a house and taking pot shots with my bow.

I feel like with just bandages and 5 health injectors there was no way I was going to kill that thing. The vendors do not seem to have any guns that are worth buying either.

You can beat at least the first three bosses without cheesing (I haven't tried the fourth).

I honestly found the first the most difficult - throw bombs at it or, depending on your definition of cheesing, use a cave that you can retreat under and shoot it with arrows.

For the robot, just get a decent shield and whack it with a one-hander, preferably one with a DoT effect.

For the dragon, I switched between a shield and a high damage two-hander. Hide behind your shield until the Dragon's in a spot you can hit it, switch to your weapon and hit the dragon, switch back to shield. Bandage yourself with the shield up if you got hit. Repeat forever.

This looks fantastic, I might have to pick your brain about modding at some point, the existing tutorials are lacklustre at best.

Hit me up anytime, on IRC or Steam (Same name, also a galo sengen avatar). I think the big thing is that all the tutorials are user-made, and it doesn't seem like very many people understand Starbound modding in a meaningful way. If anyone wants to request a specific tutorial, I can probably cobble something together.

From my perusal of some pages it seems that starbound "modding" is just creating/modifying sprite files and JSON looking files. Is there anything else to it?

You're forgetting the Lua scripting! :science:

Edit: Advanced engine modding is coming later using an API as well. That will be fun.

You mostly got it Mr. Burritos, rarely is LUA script actually needed. Most of the need for tutorial stuff is because a lot of people have 0 experience scripting or modding, but they have some ideas they wanna make into content.

Newbie checking in. So I managed to craft myself full scavenger armor and completed all the starter quests, including defeat the 'hard' Penguin UFO boss all on the very first starter planet. Was that supposed to happen? I'm guessing I can place a distress beacon on multiple planets to summon bosses? Is there more than just the 'Alpha' sector? I have a feeling I'm missing something.

The UFO should have dropped a Molten Core item. To progress you combine this with an Anvil at the workbench to create the Metalworking station.

You then build the starmap at the Metalworking station, and "use" it like a bandage or eating food to unlock not only the Beta Sector, but your next tech rank. Because being able to make steel bars and other such objects requires map knowledge for Reasons.

It's entirely possible to beat the first, AND Second boss on your first spawn world. Because you don't need to head to a new sector for required materials until unlocking and using the second starmap upgrade, and need to head to the Gamma Sector to start finding Titanium Ore for the third.

EDIT: My own question, at this point in the Beta is there any practical difference between the Alpha and Beta sectors aside from Threat level? Like, I've heard supposedly there is more ore density but I haven't really been able to notice.

I don't think it's a thing now, sadly; I haven't found a single solitary trace of anything resembling chatbox interaction :saddowns:
If you can find anything to help, I offer you a bounty of 25 cool points.

Of note, I'm currently putting the finishing touches on my Exploration Enhanced mod, which makes a bunch of changes to various things. It probably won't be out tomorrow (I have social plans all evening), but Monday is a good bet. Please mention features that would be good to make exploration and stuff better; This is what I have on the schedule so far (Completed just means I have all assets done but untested, implemented means it's good to go)
  • Four craftable drones that follow you and shed light (Completed)
  • A handheld floodlight and a fusion lamp (Very bright lantern) (Completed)
  • A teleporter that takes you between points on a planet (requires coordinate input, very complex, game may be #REKT) (Implemented)
  • A backpack that provides the energy shield status effect; I have no idea what this is, but I'm adding it cause I'm intrigued~ (In progress; Code Complete)
  • Three concrete saw things, they're like drills but one-handed so you can hold, say, a drill and a flashlight; Tiers aegisalt, cerulium, and rubium. Currently the firing sound is too quiet, but :effort: (Implemented)
  • A hazmat suit that protects against poison (In progress; Code Complete)
  • A heatsuit that protects against lava (In progress; Code Complete)
  • Some sort of mining mech (May not be in the initial release) (In progress)
  • Additional biomes and planet modifiers (May not be in the initial release) (In progress)
  • The above will include a hive/bee minibiome, because you're drat right it will
  • A kickass hovercycle and/or a tron lightcycle (Will definitely not be in the initial release)

Things I've planned/been recommended/know are wanted that are currently not possible (And why)
  • A teleport that beams you back to your ship from anywhere; This just doesn't seem possible, and I can't find where the "interactAction" : "Teleport" or "interactAction" : "OpenTeleportDialog" variables are actually dealt with, so any leads would be appreciated; Other than the actual point of the whole thing, all other assets are in place for this
  • Some sort of night-vision goggles that are properly implemented, rather than just a light-emitting hackjob
  • Pretty much any ideas that would require specific scripting to go off; I've found that scripting does NOT play well with random generation (RIP dungeon that changes shape as you move through it)

I'm a big fan of circumvention methods. Can you classify it as a race and make all its flavor text "buttbutt" without adding it to the character creation screen? You could always just have them spawn as NPCs, who can indeed talk. You could probably even make a spawner just for them.

Gonna eat so many goddamn crumpets.
There's probably something basic I'm missing here, but I recently got access to Sector X, and with the guns I'm now finding, my energy needs are way in excess of what my Vanguard armor can provide me. How do I get access to the next tiers of armor for humans? From looking at a FAQ it seems like Seeker armor is next -- but I don't seem to be able to make the necessary bars for it or have the recipe itself in my Robotic Crafting station. What do I do to keep advancing through the armor tiers?
