A Christian science class that involves "blessings" and "curses" is in no way mainstream Christianity.

I know right, most congregations don't even have a level 1 priest capable of casting bless. And if they did they're certainly not wasting one of their 2 or 3 spells per day on some homeschooler's science fair project.

Didn't notice that it was Sarah Palin until it was quoted repeatedly. Goddamn.

Every time she does anything newsworthy, it's like she's Alaskan Peggy Hill with no redeeming qualities.

edit: googled "sarah palin peggy hill" and that is apparently a thing. don't know how i didn't catch that sooner

Maybe someone can refresh my memory as to WHEN exactly Obama "played the race card." Other than the fact that he is a black politician, which I guess is reason enough for Republicans.

Reminding the GOP of the Southern Strategy is "playing the race card", as far as they're concerned. But it's perfectly OK when they say (and I do love bringing this up every time a GOP talking head accuses someone else of the "race card") that black Republicans are more "really" black than black Democrats.

Conservatives have started just flat-out refusing to acknowledge the Southern Strategy. I'm used to "it existed but let me whitesplain how it wasn't so bad" before, but I've started encountering people who just won't discuss it. It's magical.

Did you ever see that episode of Archer where Lana is suspicious of the new guy and everyone assumes it's because he's black and accuses her of being racist, and when she responds with "But I'm black!" they're like "Oh put it back in the deck" ?

Every discussion of Obama's race with Republicans is like that
:clint: Obama only got elected because he's black!
 You don't think it has anything to do with the GOP's racist comments, like that one?
:clint: Gawd listen to yourself, liberals are obsessed with race!

Yeah I say that the cartoon about objectively profligate and horrible people who do massive amounts of damage to the people and property around them is a better allegory for Palin republicans than Peggy Hill (who means well but is legit just ignorant and full of herself)

Something changes when you've personally been within grasping distance of the presidency. You can say idiotic things as a councilman, congressman, even governor (with the right cadre to spin and manage outcomes), and it ultimately won't matter much in the long term to those not seriously interested in history and politics. You stop getting passes for being an idiot when all your idiotic opinions could cause assassinations and inform federal standards. Palin presidency will no doubt inspire depressing speculative fiction.

She should forever be judged through the lens of "What if McCain had a stroke and her opinions actually mattered, to everyone on earth?" Because we really had the possibility of a bumpkin as president. One little gently caress-up in Obama's past and it was theirs. Like GWB without the money, initial intelligence, Ivy-League education, and lifelong grooming for power. The greatest handlers couldn't keep her functional for an entire four-year term. "New clear power" every week, making important choices, for the entire planet.

I believe Palin was responding to this story:

quote:

“There’s no doubt that there’s some folks who just really dislike me because they don’t like the idea of a black president,” Obama said in the article by David Remnick, which was posted on the publication’s website yesterday and appears in the magazine’s Jan. 27 edition.

“Now, the flip side of it is there are some black folks and maybe some white folks who really like me and give me the benefit of the doubt precisely because I’m a black president,” Obama said in his most direct comments on how race has affected his political standing since he’s been in office.

You know how there's always that email forward about how there should be a new Constitutional amendment so that "any new laws will always equally apply to Senators and Congressmen", or even the one about "no law shall be passed that's longer than a few pages"?

It's getting to the point where there should be a Constitutional amendment acknowledging that the Southern Strategy was a thing and that Republicans used to be Democrats and vice-versa, right alongside a Constitutional amendment that doesn't really do anything except tell people that the First Amendment doesn't mean you can say whatever you want.
