I think that tropers don't like classic science fiction because they seem like the kind of dolts who read that a character in the future is using a radio or writing with a pen and paper and they immediately scoff at how the setting is so inaccurate and implausible. Never mind that 1984 is perhaps more relevant than it ever has been, or that William Gibson's work, for all of its clunky 80's-early 90's futurism, raises important questions about how technology is altering humanity. Alien hasn't aged a day because it taps into so many primal fears. But why explore boring, hard themes when you can feel so clever for pointing out that no one will be using land line phones in 2030? I think that 25 years from now, the equivalent of tropers will roll their eyes at Mass Effect and Firefly for the same reasons.

I think the straw that broke the camel's back for me was knowing that there's a trope page for that gross Princess Molestia blog, that it significantly downplays the fact that it was taken down by Hasbro themselves (no no guys, it's "officially retired"!) and, worst of all, that it has a "Crowning Moment of Heartwarming" page that has this as the final example:quote:A meta-example: in 2012, there was a shitstorm going on in the Tumblr-verse where dozens of Pony Ask blogs were being shut down due to trolls falsely reporting said blogs for containing illegal content such as child pornography, and Ask Molestia was eventually shut down because of such claims. This would have been the end, but hundreds of fans of Molestia rallied and appealed to Tumblr to bring it back. In only two days, Ask Molestia was back up again, and J.J. gave his thanks by drawing a picture of Molly tearfully thanking her 'subjects', genuinely touched by their devotion. Haha, we sure showed those guys! Who needs common human decency when we can have pony rape, anyway? Asgerd posted:That page led me to this, which seems to be much worse. Oh My GodThe Conversion Bureau posted:The details of these fics vary Depending on the Writer, and they don't occur in the same canon, but they do share common elements. Conversion Bureau fics are set on an Earth some time in the future, where the island (or pocket universe) of Equestria has suddenly appeared in the sea. Unfortunately, the realm of Equestria is pushing into Earth's territory, and the magic of Equestria is lethal to humans. In a few short years, Equestria will flood Earth with magic, and there will be nowhere left for humanity to live. To fix this, Princess Celestia sets up "Conversion Bureaus" all around Earth, offering the humans the chance to be turned into ponies and eventually live in Equestria. and of course quote:An MST of the original can be found here and the MSTing itself has its own page here. Like, I can understand the transformation thing when it's stuff like being transformed into a super-macho bodybuilder or a porn-star or a lingerie model. That sort of thing is pretty easy to get. But then you have people who jack off to Pinocchio and An American Werewolf in London or that one story The F Plus read where the kid gets turned into his Dad's sock and finds it the most pleasurable experience in the universe. That Fluffy pony thing is just... hideous. In every sense of the word. The idea of anyone wanting to torment another living creature, one that's explicitly portrayed as intellectually vulnerable and incapable of understanding what's happening to it, is just sickening. I mean, sure, I play violent video games, but I've never thought of being violent to anyone in real life. I don't get it. There has to be something deeply, morally wrong with people that produce or consume that pony poo poo.

Yeah, a lot of furry stuff kind of tapdances around fetishizing animal abuse (with the zoophiles leaping headlong into it in the worst ways), but this fluffy thing turns the stomach because it literally fetishizes animal abuse. Okay, how about... let's see what TvTropes has to say on the Bible. The descriptive section's actually quite good and fairly well-aligned with what I learned in my own religion classes, and then you get to the tropes. Apparently Paul of Tarsus is a Deadpan Snarker, the story of David killing Philistines falls under the 'Twenty Bear Asses' trope, and the Bible has no chauvinism or misogyny in it whatsoever.

[/offtopic] One of the most fascinating things about the Old Testament, for me, is very, very few people are portrayed as unambiguously good. And it's not just a matter of shifting cultural mores, you can tell from the context that pretty much everyone in the Old Testament is meant to be seen by the reader as deeply flawed. As far as I can remember, the only person portrayed as completely moral is Job, who is probably a fictional character within the context of the Bible. (As in, regardless of what you think of the Bible's historicity, the story of Job is probably not meant to be taken as a record of events that actually happened.) Solomon is probably the only person to write two books of the Bible, where the second is a direct refutation of the first.
