I watched Clean Flix recently. A documentary about the people who sold/rented edited movies in salt lake city, and their downfall. Interesting topic.

Were these the guys with the specially-edited versions of movies where like all the swearing, nudity, and violence was cut out? I still find it staggering how many people there are who are utterly terrified of the prospect of witnessing something that they don't personally approve of, and the possibility of that perceived information somehow destroying their most deeply held beliefs. Except, apparently there weren't enough of those people to keep these guys afloat

That's them, yes. Actually, though, they made lots of money until they got shut down by the MPAA. That's part of what makes it so interesting!

I was watching Mitt recently and it really surprised me when Mitt and his wife were shocked to find out a friend had never seen the Coen Brother's O' Brother Where Art Thou. It dawned on me that if Mitt was as strict about the content of movies that he watches as many of the Mormons portrayed in Cleanflicks, O Brother is probably the only Coen Brothers movie that he could watch unedited. How sad is that? To contribute, Mitt and Cleanflicks are on Netflix. Fargo is on US Netflix, but if you use Hola Unblocker, you can find several of their other movies: Lebowski, O Brother, Barton Fink, No Country, A Serious Man, Burn After Reading

How sad is that? Cleanflicks was super interesting. I guess copyright law really is super hard to enforce, because on the face of it these guys were nowhere near the bounds of Fair Use. It's pretty much the movie equivalent of reprinting a book, only we tore a chapter out and sharpied over these random paragraphs, see? Why, yes, you can purchase this fine product, which we have marketed as a special edition of the original work. Also, mormons. I realize this is a common theme across a lot of belief systems, but it's most hilarious and/or gross when it's a religious authority figure reminding you that your free will, which was apparently provided by your almighty God, is so flimsy and worthless that it will be instantly undermined if you so much as glance at content that doesn't match your preferences, worldview, or comfort zone. The Matrix thing was my favorite. They edit out Smith getting hit by the bullet, but the dude he turns back into still has a hole in his head. Like, it's totally rad if people get killed- Mormons are apparently okay with people killing people- as long as it doesn't happen on screen, where they can see it happening. deadly_pudding has a new favorite as of 22:08 on Feb 3, 2014 |

Stolen Seas, the documentary about piracy in Somalia, was excellent. Thoughtful, even-handed, and went to some really interesting places. Most importantly, it contains interviews with a number of Somalis (including some pirates) instead of just making them anonymous scary men with guns.

Reign Of Pain posted:Hannibal just came out on Amazon. I liked the first few episodes that I watched. I'm a little more than halfway into the first season of Hannibal, and it's definitely worth watching, it starts pretty strong and gets really good when the overarching plotlines start to come together. And I think I've recommended it before in this thread, but if you like Mads Mikkelsen, you should definitely watch Valhalla Rising.

Can someone please recommend some "easy" movies? I had my wisdom teeth out and I'm still hazy from pain killers and on bed rest. I tried watching House of Cards but I can't follow it at all right now.

I thought Wing Chun was a fun one if you like kung fu and slapstick/don't mind subtitles in your mental state. Undeclared was a fun show, too, lots of "before they were famous" cameos. It's only one season, which sucks, but I liked it.

When I was heavily sedated after a routine procedure, I watched three or four episodes of Futurama. Except judging by my Netflix history on that day, I watched three or four different episodes of Futurama than the ones I thought I watched.

It's a different take on the character and stories, not just in Mikkelson's performance but in general. Freddie Lounds is now a woman and The Tattler is TattleCrime.com, for example.

... Peep Show is good, but too real sometimes, like Louie. I keep watching Marathon Man (it's good and on Netflix) over and over. I think I long for simpler times, like the late 70's when a man could still earn a good living transporting diamonds for old nazis.

I thought I watched "The Problem With Popplers" through "The Honking", but I apparently watched from "A Bicyclops Built for Two" through "The Deep South", which includes three of my least favorite episodes (as well as the Bureaucrat Song, which is fantastic). For content, Airplane! just got added and I think it holds up pretty well. It's honestly kind of a proto-Family Guy storytelling style if you haven't seen it until now, but it's way, way better than that description suggests.
