We previously covered the lifting of the fuel ban and invasion of factory hot rods that later ushered in Funny Cars, and Super Stock which morphed into Pro Stock racing. But there was a lot more historic goings on at the ’64 Winternationals at Pomona. More pictures on the linked page Check out the dudes in the hearse

How do these work? Are those injectors along the top? Is this complete? How is the air filtered?..so many questions.

Dr.Caligari posted:How do these work? Are those injectors along the top? Is this complete? How is the air filtered?..so many questions. The idea is improved air consumption/throttle response and some power. I'm not sure about ITBs, but I know with side drafts (basically the trumpets hook up to a carb instead of EFI throttle body) horn length can help you tune to specific parts of the power band. That's a fuel rail along the top, which connects to the injectors. As it sits in the picture air isn't filtered which as you can imagine isn't the typically the best thing, but they make sock filters (ex. UNI) that fit over the ends of those trumpets as well as single filters for them all (ex. pipercross) or intake/filter combos like what TWM does. If I'm glossing over details anyone finds important or annoying feel free to correct me

Unfiltered ITB's are filed along with exposed timing belts and exposed turbo turbine wheels in the category of looks cool as hell but will grenade your motor the moment a pebble looks at it wrong. The unfiltered intakes can be found on drag strips where people justify the tiny bump in power from not having to pull the air through a filter outweighs the risk of sucking something in through the intake. Only other place you'll see it is show cars that don't get driven or ricers who are about to learn a hard lesson about form over function on a daily driver. I don't think there's any reason for an exposed timing belt other than it looks cool.

I have 3 friend who have run open itbs for the past 5 years all year every day. None of them have ever had any issues. I think it's a massively overstated issue.

I wouldn't do it for an offroad or non-winter rally vehicle but for track/road use in non dusty conditions? Sure. Just don't put the intake somewhere stupid like under the vehicle or in a wheel well and it will be fine. So basically I agree with a5h here.

Dunno if the US has been 'suffering' from this neknomination thing where idiots dare other idiots to drink obscene amounts of alcohol in a video and then nominate yet more idiots to do the same like some sort of death by booze chain letter... Car peeps have caught onto this and have invented 'burnout nominations' which is similar but instead of telling people to virtually kill themselves with lovely mixed alcohol it's just asking them to do a burnout. Now there's a lot of your average boy racer types doing it but there's a few bits of gold like this Driftworks R32 filling their entire garage with thick smoke. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10152595588368448

What kills me is we still don't have a real time for the P1 around the ring, just rumors that it could be anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds faster than the 918. I mean if I did something that insane I would at least announce it , and knowing typical top gear story arcs, I wouldn't count the Porsche out yet.

I don't know, times around the Ring are cool and all, but they're not the be-all end-all of car supremacy. There are so many variables that while they're cool to hear, I wouldn't use them as a particularly strong comparison especially if they were tested on different days at different times (and any manufacturer releasing their Ring times certainly aren't doing it at the same time as a major competitor). I think both the P1 and the 918 are both loving awesome but unless it's the Stig driving them around the Top Gear Test Track back-to-back I don't put much credence in choosing one over the other (my money is also on the P1 being faster, if only marginally)

I'm betting that McLaren is being coy about times because it's hilariously fast.
|
# ? Feb 11, 2014 03:05 |
Nurburgring times are useless bench-racing wankery, though? Not because the ring is somehow not an adequate test of a car or whatever, but because there are no official timing points for the nordschleife. The only 'official' laps include the modern GP circuit which renders a lot of comparisons with older cars obsolete, and also means if you want to measure a nordschleife lap you can set your start and end lines wherever the gently caress you like. On top of this, the lap times all come from the manufacturers themselves who wouldn't dream of putting slicks or race pads or any number of other go-faster parts on the cars, or tweak the times a little, because that would be cheating

Errr most people do a full lap or btg and post video. It's a much more useful benchmark than literally anything else supplied by a manufacturer.

I know the ring is a silly benchmark to hold a car against, but the idea that it could be 30 seconds faster than the 918 which is already the fastest thing by a huge chuck is so ludicrous I am giddy to see them put up against each other.
